American Ancestors, a national center for family history, heritage, and culture, is the oldest and largest genealogical society in the country. Reporting to the Vice President of Publishing and supervising the Production Coordinator and Genealogists of the Newbury Street Press, we seek someone who is highly organized, detail oriented, and flexible to serve as Supervising Editor at our Boston office. This is an exempt, full-time regular position supporting the Publications team with the development, writing, editing, and production of books, and the editing of The New England Historical and Genealogical Register, our quarterly scholarly journal. This is an in-person position at our Boston office with a hybrid option.
This is a project-management position; the ideal candidate will have excellent editorial, writing, and organizational skills and a strong interest in, or experience with, genealogical research and writing.

Provide editorial and production support to other members of the Publications team.

Contract and manage freelance editors, copy editors, and indexers.

Edit and manage the production of many American Ancestors and Newbury Street Press titles.

Assist with identifying and implementing best practices and house style.

Maintain editorial accuracy and consistency in our publications and marketing materials across the organization.

Help review manuscript submissions for books to be published under the American Ancestors imprint and collaborate with Publications team to conceptualize and plan new titles.

Work with Publications and other teams within the organization to gather information and materials for potential book projects; assemble book proposals; collaborate with the Vice President of Publishing to identify relevant personnel for projects.

Help Publications genealogists and Vice President of Publishing develop project plans for future titles.

Review progress reports; ensure all book project patrons receive timely status reports; act as a liaison with patrons on select projects.

Ensure that reference and tracking documents in SharePoint (guidelines, training documents, budgets, account code list, book award list, honoree book list) are complete, accurate, and up to date.

Create folder structure for new projects in SharePoint.
Throughout all work, the Supervising Editor is mindful of the American Ancestors’ mission and goals; collaborates with other teams in a timely fashion; and is attentive to overall quality, budget, and schedule of publications.

Bachelor’s degree
-
Minimum 5 years' experience in book, magazine, or journal publishing or commensurate writing and editing experience in another field.

Minimum 3 years' experience supervising others

Minimum 3 years' experience in project management

Familiarity with genealogical writing and experience with historical and/or genealogical research.

Excellent oral and written communication skills, including impeccable grammar and spelling.

Excellent copyediting and proofreading skills; knowledge of The Chicago Manual of Style.

Strong interpersonal skills.

Solid time management and organizational skills; ability to prioritize effectively.

Ability to multitask while maintaining accuracy and working independently.

Skill with Microsoft Office Suite required; familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite desired but not essential.
