Residential Counselor

Second Story for Teens in Crisis is part of Second Story, a nonprofit that transforms the lives of youth and families in need by providing safe havens and opportunities to grow and thrive through residential and community-based programs. Our Teens in Crisis program is the only emergency home and safe haven in Northern Virginia for teens aged 13–17, providing shelter, safety, counseling, and support during critical moments in a young person’s life.

We are seeking several individuals to work in-person as full-time (40 hours per week) Residential Counselor. This position is an excellent introduction to case management and crisis counseling in the mental health/social services field. Ideal candidates will be reliable, compassionate, adaptable, culturally competent, and eager to learn with strong communication, problem-solving, and conflict resolution skills.

Responsibilities:

  • Support residents through the daily house schedule
  • Conduct individual and group counseling sessions
  • Maintain a safe, secure, and healthy living environment
  • Provide clinical case management, including case notes and treatment plans
  • Answer crisis hotline calls
  • Conduct intakes and discharges

Schedule Options (days/hours are non-negotiable):

  • Monday: 1pm-11pm
  • Tuesday: 1pm-11pm
  • Wednesday: 1pm-11pm
  • Thursday: OFF
  • Friday: OFF
  • Saturday: OFF

SCHEDULE OPTION #4:

  • Sunday: OFF
  • Monday: OFF
  • Tuesday: OFF
  • Wednesday: 1pm-11pm
  • Thursday: 1pm-11pm
  • Friday: 1pm-11pm
  • Saturday: 1pm-11pm

Qualifications:

  • REQUIRED: Must have a bachelor’s degree (preferably in psychology, social work, human services, or a related field)
  • REQUIRED: Must be willing to undergo background investigations prior to employment and become certified in CPR/First Aid and Medication Administration
  • REQUIRED: Prior experience in the mental health field, especially with teenagers
  • PREFERRED: Ability to speak Spanish

Hourly Salary:

This position pays $23 per hour (or $24 per hour for candidates who speak Spanish fluently).
