Residential Painter

Position Summary

We are seeking an experienced and skilled Residential Painter to join our crew. The ideal candidate has 2–4 years of proven experience in residential painting and finishing, demonstrating proficiency in both preparation techniques and various application methods. This role requires the ability to execute tasks with minimal supervision, manage job flow on smaller projects, and maintain a high standard of craftsmanship.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

This role moves beyond basic assistance and requires independent execution of core painting tasks:

  • High-Quality Surface Preparation: Independently manage and execute all necessary prep work, including detailed scraping, sanding, patching drywall, skim-coating, and caulking on both interior and exterior surfaces to ensure a premium finish.
  • Skilled Application: Expertly apply primers, paints, stains, and clear coats using brushes, rollers, and sprayers (airless and HVLP). Must be proficient in achieving clean lines and consistent, professional-grade coverage.
  • Client & Crew Communication: Maintain professional and polite communication with clients while on-site. Clearly communicate project status, material needs, and any potential issues to the Lead Painter or Foreman.
  • Job Site Management: Set up and maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment. Ensure efficient use of materials and adherence to project timelines.
  • Quality Control: Conduct personal quality checks on work throughout the process, proactively identifying and correcting imperfections before the final review.

Key Tasks & Daily Activities

  • Prep Work: Performing complex repairs, including patching large holes and addressing damaged trim.
  • Material Handling: Accurately calculating, mixing, and tinting paints and finishes according to specifications and matching existing colors.
  • Finish Work: Executing specialized application techniques, such as rolling smooth finishes on walls and back-brushing applied stains.
  • Safety Adherence: Properly setting up and safely working from ladders (up to 32ft) and scaffolding, adhering strictly to all OSHA standards and company safety protocols.
  • Tool Maintenance: Performing routine cleaning and maintenance on all painting equipment, especially sprayers, to ensure longevity and peak performance.

Required Competencies and Qualifications
This role requires a foundation of technical skill combined with reliability and professionalism.

Experience

2–4 years of documented, professional painting experience, primarily in residential settings.

Technical Skills

Proven ability to operate and troubleshoot airless sprayers; proficiency in various brush and roller techniques; advanced knowledge of prep materials (putties, fillers, primers).

Independence

Ability to perform tasks and complete small- to medium-sized rooms/areas independently after initial instruction.

Problem-Solving

Basic ability to diagnose and address common painting failures (e.g., blistering, bleed-through) and adjust techniques accordingly.

Physical

Capable of lifting 50+ lbs regularly, working at heights, and standing/kneeling for extended periods.

Logistics

Valid driver’s license and dependable transportation required. Own set of professional hand tools (brushes, scrapers, utility knife, etc.) preferred.

Compensation & Growth Potential
Compensation is highly competitive and commensurate with experience, typically starting in the $20 - $27 per hour range. Opportunities exist for rapid advancement to a Lead Painter or Foreman role based on demonstrated reliability, leadership, and quality of work.
