Residential Project Designer

Are you an experienced residential interior designer who enjoys leading clients through the design process and seeing your work come to life? If you’re looking for a collaborative team, meaningful projects, and a role where your design leadership is valued, we’d like to connect.

Thayer Design Build is growing, and we’re looking for a Residential Project Designer to join our high-performing design-build team. This is an opportunity to work one-on-one with homeowners, guide thoughtful design decisions, and shape spaces that are both functional and beautiful.

If you’re confident with clients, driven to create well-resolved designs, and take pride in delivering work that holds up in the field, this could be a strong fit.

About the Role
As a Residential Project Designer, you’ll lead the design phase of remodeling projects from initial concepts through construction-ready plans. You’ll guide clients through decisions, develop designs that are both inspiring and buildable, and collaborate closely with the team to ensure a smooth transition into construction.

You’ll be trusted to lead projects independently while also contributing to a collaborative, detail-focused team environment.

What You’ll Do

  • Translate client goals into thoughtful, functional, and buildable designs
  • Prepare plans, scopes of work, and material selections
  • Guide clients through space planning and finish decisions with clarity and confidence
  • Develop layouts, cabinetry, and construction drawings
  • Collaborate with teammates to keep projects aligned from design through construction
  • Coordinate design intent with production to support successful handoffs

You’ll play a key role in shaping both the client experience and the final outcome of each project.

Who Thrives Here
You’ll do well in this role if you:

  • Build trust quickly with clients and communicate with confidence
  • Have a strong eye for design and a passion for functional problem-solving
  • Stay organized while managing complex information and multiple decisions
  • Take ownership of your work and follow through on details
  • Enjoy collaborating with a team while also working independently
  • Are motivated to grow and continue refining your craft

What You Bring

Soft Skills

  • Strong client presence and interpersonal skills
  • Passion for creative, functional design
  • Clear communication across written, verbal, and visual formats
  • High integrity and accountability
  • Ability to stay organized and manage multiple moving parts
  • Collaborative mindset with initiative

Hard Skills

  • 4-year degree in Interior Design or similar field
  • 4+ years of residential interior design or design-build experience
  • Proficiency in Chief Architect, Revit, or similar 3D CAD software
  • Strong space planning, cabinet design, and construction drawing skills
  • Deep understanding of material selection, balancing budget, aesthetics, and function
  • Experience guiding clients through pre-construction and into the build phase

What We Offer

  • Full-time, year-round work
  • Pay is dependent on experience
  • Profit-sharing bonus
  • Paid vacation and holidays
  • Health, dental, vision, and life insurance
  • 401(k) with employer matching
  • Ongoing training and professional development
  • A supportive, collaborative team culture that values quality and relationships
