RESP DIRECTOR/RRT

POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the direction of the hospital administrator, uses professional judgment to supervise and administer all

phases of the Respiratory Department, either directly or indirectly.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES & AUTHORITIES:

As department director has the following responsibilities:

  • Updates and establishes departmental policies as needed.
  • Performs respiratory care services in accordance with Federal, State, CLIA, and hospital standards.
  • Provides communication and cooperation with other departments with best interest of patient care.
  • Evaluates department safety procedures and function of equipment.
  • Reports to the CEO any pertinent knowledge concerning department.
  • Supervises all employees in the department in routine operations and helps provide proper working conditions for employees.
  • Provides in-service education for new procedures.
  • Attends monthly department director meetings with administration.
  • Calls and conducts departmental staff meetings.
  • Provides schedule for personnel.
  • Evaluates new equipment, provides justification of purchases.
  • Maintains adequate and functional level of departmental supplies.
  • Prepares annual departmental budget and attends monthly variance reviews with administration.
  • Assist Human Resources with recruitment, interviewing prospective employees, and provides orientation for new employees.
  • Evaluates employee performance and initiates counseling of employees when necessary.
  • Other duties as assigned by hospital administration.
  • Follows guidelines set forth as a staff therapist when working the floor, when needed.
  • Hours may be irregular at times.

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Complies with all policies and procedures set forth in the employee handbook of LHHS as well as those set forth in the Respiratory Care Manual.

2. Complies with all policies and procedures stated in the Infection Control and Safety Manuals.

3. May start IVs if they have attended an IV start in-service provided by a qualified RN or CRNA.

4. Maintains a good working atmosphere in their department and encourages staff to excel.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, SKILLS, ABILITIES):

The Respiratory/Cardiopulmonary Department Director must be a graduate of an accredited school for Respiratory Therapy and must have successfully completed a certification and registry exam. The Director must have obtained a degree of Bachelors of Science in either leadership/business, respiratory therapy, or a similar pertinent field. A current Kentucky license is mandatory. Certification in CPR is also a requirement. Must have comprehensive knowledge of theoretical and clinical working of Respiratory Therapy. Must have good communication skills. Patient teaching may be required at various times when ordered by physician. Must have at least 5 years of Respiratory Experience.

OTHER SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, REGISTRATIONS, ETC.)

BLS certification is required. ACLS certification preferred. Active member of the AARC (American Association for Respiratory Care) is a plus. A current Kentucky license is mandatory. Active participation in hospital committees and functions a plus.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

1. Must have professional appearance and demeanor.

2. Hours may be irregular at times.

3. Must convey a professional and positive image and attitude regarding the facility at all times.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Work is typically performed in an adequately lighted and climate controlled environment. Employee will have risk of exposure to blood and body fluids. Universal Precautions must be used at all times.
