Respiratory Registered Nurse (RN) – Skilled Nursing Facility (Ohio)

Position Summary

The Respiratory RN provides specialized nursing care to residents with acute and chronic cardiopulmonary conditions in a skilled nursing facility. This role focuses heavily on respiratory treatments and coordination of care in compliance with Ohio nursing and respiratory care regulations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform comprehensive respiratory assessments (lung sounds, oxygenation, respiratory effort, pulse oximetry)

  • Administer oxygen therapy, nebulizer treatments, and respiratory medications as ordered

  • Perform tracheostomy care, suctioning, and airway management

  • Monitor and document respiratory status, vital signs, and response to interventions

  • Collaborate with physicians and interdisciplinary team

  • Participate in care planning, admissions, and discharge planning

  • Educate residents and families on respiratory conditions and treatments

  • Ensure compliance with infection control (especially for respiratory illnesses)

  • Respond to emergencies (e.g., respiratory failure, code situations)

  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation per facility and state requirements

Qualifications

  • Current, unencumbered Ohio RN license

  • BLS certification required; ACLS preferred (especially for vent units)

  • Experience in:

    • Skilled nursing or long-term care

  • Knowledge of respiratory equipment and infection control standards

  • Strong respiratory and clinical assessment skills

  • Ability to recognize early respiratory decline

  • Critical thinking and emergency response ability

  • Team collaboration and communication

Work Environment (SNF-Specific)

  • Long-term care or post-acute rehab setting

  • Frequent exposure to chronic respiratory diseases (COPD, pneumonia, COVID, etc.)

  • Fast-paced environment with high-acuity residents

Physical Requirements

  • Lift/move residents (50 lbs with assistance)

  • Frequent standing, walking, bending

  • Ability to respond quickly to emergencies
