A Durable Medical Equipment(DME) Respiratory Therapist is a licensed clinician who delivers, sets up, and manages home-use respiratory equipment like CPAP/BIPAP machines, oxygen concentrators, and ventilators. They bridge the gap between hospital and home, educating patients and monitoring therapy compliance.
Key Responsibilities
- Equipment Setup & Delivery: Safely set up, test and troubleshoot medical equipment in patients' homes or clinical offices.
- Patient Education: Train patients and caregivers on proper equipment usage, maintenance, safety protocols, and adverse reactions.
- Clinical Monitoring: Track patient compliance data(like PAP therapy hours), conduct assessments, and adjust the care plan in accordance with physician orders.
- Healthcare Coordination: Act as a liaison between the patient, their doctors, case managers, and insurance providers.
Requirements
- Education & Licensing: An associate or bachelor's degree in respiratory therapy.
- Credentials: Must hold a Certified Respiratory Therapist(CRT) or Registered Respiratory Therapist(RRT) credential, alongside a valid state license.
- Experience: Previous clinical or home-care experience(typically 1-2 years) is often preferred.
Work Environment
- Typically split their time between an office/clinical base, driving to patients' homes, and conducting telehealth/remote follow-ups.
- Requires a valid driver's license and a clean driving record, as travel to regional patient residences is a frequent requirement.
