Respiratory Therapist (Nights) Full Time

JOB SUMMARY:

Duties will include setting up and operating devices such as therapeutic gas administration apparatus and mechanical ventilators, providing emergency care, such as external cardiac massage, artificial respiration, or assistance with cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and maintaining charts that contain patient identification and therapy information.

JOB DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Monitoring patient physiological responses to therapy such as arterial blood gases, vital signs or blood chemistry, and lung function changes, and consulting with physicians if there are adverse reactions.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education & Training:

  • Bachelor’s degree in respiratory therapy or related field.
  • Completion of an accredited respiratory therapy program.
  • Registration or certification by the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC).
  • Current RCP license in Louisiana.
  • Current BLS and/or CPR certification from the American Heart Association or American Red Cross or approved agency.

Work Experience:

  • Respiratory care, emergency care, and intensive care experience.
  • Experience with respiratory equipment.
  • Strong knowledge of pulmonary function and pulmonary rehabilitation.

Skills & Abilities:

  • Knowledge of advanced respiratory care techniques and equipment
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Knowledge of healthcare laws, regulations, and standards
  • Proficiency in electronic health records (EHR) systems
  • Demonstrate a strong understanding of HIPAA policies and regulations
  • Ability to work effectively as a team member to communicate clearly, compassionately, and respectfully, with all health professionals, as well as with administrative support staff.
  • Ability to flexibly respond to changing demands within the work environment.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients, employees, and the public.

Mental & Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to tolerate mental and emotional distress as an anticipated aspect of the position.
  • May require working under stressful conditions.
  • Requires sitting and standing for extended periods of time. Some bending, stretching, lifting, and stooping may be required.
  • Requires manual dexterity sufficient to operate office equipment. Requires a normal range of hearing and vision, and the ability to communicate with office personnel, patients, and the community.

  • Working as part of a team of health care professionals to manage patient care by assisting with medical procedures.
  • Setting up and operating devices including therapeutic gas administration apparatus, mechanical ventilators, environmental control systems, and aerosol generators.
  • Following specified parameters of treatment.
  • Application and monitoring of oxygen, ventilatory therapy, bronchial hygiene therapy, respiratory rehabilitation, and cardiopulmonary resuscitation;
  • Insertion and care of airways as ordered by a physician;
  • Institution of any type of physiologic monitoring applicable to respiratory therapy;
  • Administration of drugs and medications used in respiratory therapy that have been dispensed by a pharmacist and prescribed by a physician to be administered by qualified respiratory therapy personnel as defined in this Chapter;
  • Initiation of treatment changes and testing techniques required for the implementation of respiratory therapy protocols as directed by a physician;
  • Administration of medical gases and environmental control systems and their apparatus;
  • Administration of humidity and aerosol therapy;
  • Application of chest pulmonary therapy, transcription and implementation of the written and verbal orders of a physician;
  • The institution of known and physician-approved protocols relating to respiratory therapy in emergency situations in the absence of immediate direction by a physician; and
  • Such therapy shall also include specific procedures and diagnostic testing as ordered by the physician to assist in diagnosis, monitoring, treatment, and research, including those procedures required and directed by the physician for the drawing of blood samples to determine acid-base status and blood gas values, the collection of other body fluids for analysis, and the measurement of cardiopulmonary functions.
  • Respiratory therapy shall also include teaching patient and family respiratory therapy procedures only as a part of a patient's ongoing program and consultation services under the order of a licensed physician for health, educational, and community agencies.
  • Providing emergency care, such as external cardiac massage, artificial respiration, or assistance with cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
  • Inspecting, testing, cleaning, and maintaining respiratory therapy equipment to ensure it is functioning safely and efficiently.
  • Maintaining charts that contain patient identification and therapy information.
  • Measuring arterial blood gases, reading prescriptions, lung capacity, and reviewing other information to assess patient condition.
  • Relaying blood analysis results to a physician.
  • Making emergency visits to resolve equipment problems when necessary.
  • Ordering equipment repairs when necessary.
  • Explaining health care treatment procedures to patients to gain cooperation.
  • Checking pulmonary functions in patients.
  • Actively participates in all quality assurance, performance improvement activities.
  • Operates standard respiratory equipment, office equipment, including computers, copiers, printers, telephones, etc.
