Respiratory Therapist - PRN

Position Summary

The Respiratory Therapist is responsible for safe delivery of patient care, as well as effective and optimized respiratory care. This will be achieved through performing all aspects of cardiopulmonary functions within the capabilities of the facility, keeping in compliance with all regulatory statues and within the scope of license.

Essential Job Functions/Accountabilities

Performs departmental operation functions: Daily charges; Calibration controls on necessary equipment; Stock supplies in designated areas of the facility; Chart all patient interactions in the chart; Make frequent rounds to stay current with order changes and requests; Monitor equipment and report all malfunctions. Performs both basic and critical respiratory care procedures, cardiac rehab program, and cardiac stress procedures on: In-house patients, including observation patients; New admits; Trauma and code cases; Outpatients; Patients on oxygen and CPAP/BIPAP.

Performs both evaluation and diagnostic testing on in-house patients and outpatients. Communicates with physicians for the best care of the patient according to established protocols. Interprets test results and assists in establishing the best course for the patient’s recovery according to established protocol. Uses evidence to recommend revisions to established protocols. Collaborates on and develops staff and patient education and updates, Physician updates as the field of respiratory advances.

Educates lung and heart patients about disease and compliance. Provides QA monitoring as needed with various studies. Performs arterial punctures to obtain arterial blood samples for blood gas analysis, and understands the possible complications and contraindications associated with the procedure. Administers respiratory therapy treatments, and nebulized medications. Understands the purpose of each and the possible side effects associated with each. Sets-up and monitors mechanical ventilators and the associated critical care duties required for such treatment.

Keeps up-to-date on new developments in Respiratory Therapy. Follows departmental equipment sterilization procedures. Documents all pertinent data on the patient’s medical record following completion of any service. Maintains a thorough knowledge of electronic health record, departmental forms, flow charts, Logbooks and their proper usage. Perform all ordered patient EKGs. Responds to all code, rapid response, and airway situations.

Position Requirements

Education: Graduate from an AMA approved school for Respiratory Care required.

Experience: Three to five (3-5) years of relevant clinical practice experience preferred.

Technical Skills: N/A

Certifications/Licenses/Registrations: Current license to practice as a Respiratory Care Professional in Ohio and in good standing. BLS required. ACLS required within one month of hire. PALS required within one (1) year of hire.
