Position Description

Position Title: Admissions/Retail Associate
Reports To: Asst Retail Manager
Type of Employment: Part-time (24 hours per week)
Status: Hourly (Non-exempt, eligible for over time)

Position Summary

Tohono Chul is a 49-acre public garden in Tucson, Arizona whose mission is to enrich people’s lives by connecting them with the wonders of nature, art, and culture in the Sonoran Desert region and to inspire wise stewardship of the natural world. Founded in 1985, Tohono Chul has been a celebrated destination for locals to global visitors and deemed “One of the World’s Ten Best Botanical Gardens” by Travel + Leisure Magazine. We are seeking a team-oriented Individual who will thrive in a fast-paced environment and who is well-suited to working collaboratively with staff and volunteers. We’re looking for a friendly, passionate professional with experience in retail sales and customer service. Responsible for greeting and answering questions, processing payments, and making change for the Park’s external and internal customers. This position requires work on weekends, occasional evenings, nights, and holidays.

We are seeking friendly, dependable individuals to join our team as Admissions & Retail Associates. These part-time positions are essential in creating a welcoming experience for all visitors and are cross-trained to work in admissions and all three of our retail shops. Responsibilities include processing transactions, answering questions, promoting memberships, restocking and merchandising inventory, and supporting plant sales and pop-up retail events.

Duties also include light cleaning, basic data collection, and retail support for special events. Open availability is preferred, with weekend and evening shifts, especially during December’s Holiday Nights program, strongly prioritized. Ideal candidates are enthusiastic about promoting local artists and vendors, sharing the mission of the park, and engaging with guests. Familiarity with Tucson and the Sonoran Desert is a plus.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Greet and assist guests in a friendly, professional, and mission-aligned manner
  • Work at admissions and in all three retail shops as scheduled· Process sales transactions accurately using the point-of-sale system (admissions, retail, memberships, and event tickets)
  • Promote memberships, local artists, and the mission of the park to guests
  • Restock, merchandise, and organize inventory in retail spaces·
  • Assist with plant sales and pop-up retail events throughout the season
  • Perform light cleaning tasks to maintain tidy, welcoming admissions and retail areas
  • Participate in basic data collection related to guest interactions, sales, and event participation
  • Stay informed about current exhibitions, programs, and park updates
  • Support special events, including evening or weekend programs
  • Communicate and collaborate effectively with staff, volunteers, and visitors·
  • Follow safety and cash-handling protocols
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Required

  • At least 1 year of customer service or retail experience
  • Experience handling cash and operating a point-of-sale (POS) system
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work independently, take initiative, follow verbal and written directions, and complete detailed processes accurately
  • Comfortable with physical tasks, including standing for long periods, restocking, and light cleaning
  • Availability to work weekends, evenings, and holidays as scheduled

Preferred

  • Familiarity with Tucson and the Sonoran Desert region
  • Interest in or experience promoting local art, conservation, or nonprofit missions
  • Experience supporting special events, such as festivals, plant sales, or evening programs
  • Basic computer skills, including use of email, spreadsheets, or simple data entry
  • Spanish language skills or experience working with diverse audiences
