Revenue Cycle Informaticist 1.0 FTE (Onsite position in Waverly, IA)

PRIMARY FUNCTIONS
The Revenue Cycle Informaticist serves as the primary liaison between Revenue Cycle operations, Information Technology, and clinical departments to optimize the use of Epic revenue cycle applications. This role supports configuration, workflow design, data analysis, reporting, and process improvement across the revenue cycle to improve financial performance, regulatory compliance, and operational efficiency within a Critical Access Hospital environment.
The informaticist leverages Epic functionality, analytics, and revenue cycle best practices to support patient access, charge capture, billing, claims management, reimbursement, and denial prevention.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Epic System Optimization

  • Serve as a subject matter expert for Epic revenue cycle applications including Resolute Professional Billing, Resolute Hospital Billing, Prelude, Cadence, and Grand Central.
  • Analyze workflows and recommend system optimization to improve efficiency and reduce revenue leakage.
  • Collaborate with IT analysts to design, build, test, and implement Epic system enhancements and upgrades.
  • Support Epic build governance and change management processes.

2. Revenue Cycle Process Improvement

  • Evaluate and improve processes across the full revenue cycle including:
  • Patient access and registration
  • Insurance verification and authorization
  • Charge capture
  • Coding and documentation workflows
  • Billing and claims submission
  • Payment posting
  • Denial management and appeals
  • Identify root causes of denials and recommend operational or system improvements.

3. Data Analytics & Reporting

  • Develop and maintain Epic reporting tools such as Reporting Workbench, dashboards, and extracts.
  • Analyze revenue cycle performance metrics including:
  • Days in Accounts Receivable
  • Clean claim rate
  • Denial rates
  • Charge lag
  • Net collection rate
  • Charge capture accuracy
  • Provide actionable insights to leadership to improve financial performance.

4. Workflow & User Support

  • Work closely with Patient Access, Coding, Billing, Finance, and Clinical teams to align workflows with Epic functionality.
  • Provide end-user support, troubleshooting, and workflow guidance.
  • Assist with testing during Epic upgrades and optimization initiatives.

5. Training & Education

  • Develop and deliver training for revenue cycle staff related to Epic workflows and system changes.
  • Create user documentation, job aids, and workflow guides.

6. Compliance & Regulatory Support

  • Ensure Epic workflows support compliance with federal and state regulations affecting Critical Access Hospitals.
  • Assist with audits, regulatory reporting, and documentation standards.

7. Strategic Initiatives

  • Participate in revenue cycle improvement initiatives and organizational strategic planning.
  • Support Epic optimization, module expansion, and digital transformation projects.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
1. Education, Experience, and Training

  • Bachelor’s degree in Health Informatics, Health Information Management, Healthcare Administration, Business, Information Systems, or related field preferred. 3–5 years of healthcare revenue cycle experience preferred.
  • Experience with Epic revenue cycle modules is strongly preferred.
  • Experience working in a hospital or critical access hospital setting preferred.
  • Epic certifications (preferred):

i. Epic Resolute Hospital Billing
ii. Epic Resolute Professional Billing
iii. Epic Prelude
iv. Epic Cadence

  • Strong understanding of healthcare revenue cycle processes.
  • Knowledge of Epic reporting tools and analytics.
  • Ability to analyze workflows and implement system-based solutions.
  • Strong problem-solving and critical thinking skills.
  • Excellent communication skills with both technical and operational stakeholders.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced healthcare environment.
  • Must possess ability to learn and navigate computer systems including the online training modules, the employee timesheet and the performance appraisal system.
  • Must have ability to adapt to and navigate various databases and computer systems.
  • Must have skills and ability to identify opportunities and oversee the improvement process to implement lasting changes.
  • Must be able to effectively communicate with hospital staff.
  • Must have attention-to-detail in all aspects of work.
  • Must be able to read, speak, and write fluent English.

2. Physical Requirements

  • Sitting – Approximately 60% of shift.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
1. May come in contact with hazardous chemicals or treatment modalities.
2. The possibility exists of exposure to communicable disease due to working in a healthcare environment.
3. Involvement in patient care may result in unavoidable work-related illnesses.
4. Work is primarily performed in an office or remote setting within the hospital environment.
5. May require occasional on-call or after-hours work during Epic upgrades or implementations.
