Revenue Cycle Specialist – Medical Billing / Coding / Denials (Athenahealth)

<Job Summary>
Dragonfly Primary Care is a small, independent outpatient medical practice seeking an experienced Revenue Cycle Specialist to assist with billing, coding, and claims management.

We use Athenahealth for EHR and billing, and the system currently handles claim submission, ERA posting, and payment posting. We are looking for someone who can manage the remaining parts of the revenue cycle, including coding review, denial resolution, payment analysis, and payer follow-up.

This role requires someone comfortable working independently and experienced with outpatient medical billing.

This is not an entry-level billing position. We are looking for someone comfortable working independently who understands the full outpatient billing cycle.

<Responsibilities>

  • Review provider documentation and assign accurate CPT, ICD-10, HCPCS, and modifiers
  • Review charges in Athena prior to claim submission
  • Monitor claim status and resolve rejections and denials
  • Perform insurance follow-up and appeals
  • Review EOB / ERA payments for accuracy and underpayments
  • Identify payer issues and reimbursement trends
  • Communicate with providers regarding documentation and coding needs
  • Maintain payer compliance (Medicare, Medicaid, commercial)
  • Assist with fee schedule review and reimbursement analysis
  • Work within Athenahealth billing workflows
  • Help improve overall revenue cycle performance

<Current Billing Workflow>

Athenahealth currently handles:

  • Claim submission to clearinghouse
  • ERA import and payment posting
  • Basic billing workflow

This role will focus on:

  • Coding accuracy
  • Claim review
  • Denial resolution
  • AR follow-up
  • Payment analysis
  • Appeals

<Requirements>

  • 3+ years medical billing / coding / AR experience
  • Experience with outpatient / primary care billing
  • Strong knowledge of CPT, ICD-10, modifiers
  • Experience resolving claim denials
  • Experience working with Medicare, Medicaid, and commercial payers
  • Ability to work independently
  • Strong attention to detail

<Strongly preferred:>

  • Athenahealth experience
  • CPC, CCS, or CPB certification
  • Experience with small practice billing
  • Experience with revenue cycle analysis

<Compensation>

  • $24 – 29 per hour depending on experience
  • Flexible hours
  • Small independent practice — no corporate call center environment

<About the Practice>

We are a small, privately owned outpatient clinic with excellent patient reviews and a stable provider team.

This role works directly with practice leadership and providers, without the bureaucracy of a large health system. We value efficient workflows, accurate billing, and a low-stress work environment.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $24.00 - $29.00 per hour

Expected hours: 40 per week
