Position Summary

The Payments Risk & Underwriting Analyst plays a critical role in identifying, mitigating, and preventing financial risk and fraud across High Wire’s payment ecosystem. This role combines deep data analysis, transaction monitoring, and merchant risk evaluation to support operational integrity and regulatory compliance. The ideal candidate will possess strong quantitative skills, fraud expertise, and a collaborative mindset to drive risk-informed decision-making across high-risk merchant segments.

Key Responsibilities

Dispute Communication:

  • Review all incoming chargebacks/disputes and assist merchants with filing rebuttals.
  • Handle and resolve customer disputes with a focus on clarity, empathy, and professionalism.
  • Communicate dispute outcomes to customers and internal stakeholders, ensuring transparency and understanding.
  • Develop and maintain templates for dispute communications to ensure consistency and accuracy.
  • Collaborate with the Customer Support and Legal teams to address complex dispute cases.

Underwriting and Risk Review:

  • Monitor merchant accounts to identify potentially fraudulent activity and make decisions on when to hold funds and close accounts.
  • Conduct investigations into accounts that present fraud or risk exposure to High Wire and make credit decisions based on the information reviewed.
  • Gather and interpret data from credit reports, tax returns, financial statements, and other documentation.
  • Identify patterns and trends to prevent fraud or future losses.
  • Engage with merchants to collect negative balances.
  • Prepare regular reports for senior management, highlighting key risk indicators and areas for improvement.

Skills & Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience identifying and mitigating fraud, chargebacks, and credit risk within high-risk merchant portfolios
  • Ability to interpret behavioral patterns, transactional anomalies, and financial indicators to inform underwriting decisions
  • Proficient in analyzing credit reports, financial statements, tax returns, and supporting documentation to assess merchant viability
  • Skilled in making fund hold and account closure decisions based on risk exposure and compliance thresholds
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to manage sensitive customer disputes professionally and empathetically
  • Experience developing standardized templates and workflows for dispute handling and merchant rebuttals
  • Proven ability to work across Risk, Legal, Customer Support, and Finance teams to resolve complex cases and improve operational workflows
  • Comfortable engaging directly with merchants to resolve negative balances and clarify dispute outcomes

Education & Experience

  • 3–5 years of experience in payments risk, underwriting, or fraud operations, ideally within fintech, banking, or merchant services – High Risk merchant experience preferred.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $78,148.95 - $94,114.86 per year
