Job Summary
Manzana is currently hiring a bilingual (English/Spanish) Safety Manager to join our team in Sunnyside, WA. The Safety Manager is responsible for promoting and maintaining a safe working environment during equipment installation, startup, commissioning, and ongoing production operations. This role provides hands-on safety leadership and serves as the primary safety interface for contractors, vendors, and internal teams. The Safety Manager manages Manzana's safety programs, policies, and procedures to promote occupational safety and prevent workplace accidents. Analyzes safety metrics to evaluate and track program performance, identify trends, and ensure operational alignment with safety objectives. Implements processes and standards to inspect and audit the organization's procedures, facilities, and equipment and ensure compliance with safety regulations and requirements. Oversees incident investigations to determine root causes, develop preventative measures, and prepare safety reports for management. Organizes safety trainings, meetings, and orientations to ensure adequate understanding of risks and safety protocols
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Vendor & Contractor Safety Coordination
o Serve as the on-site safety focal point for all vendors, contractors, and subcontractors during installation, commissioning, and startup phases.
o Ensure all contractors understand and comply with site safety rules, work permits, lockout/tagout requirements, confined space rules, and PPE standards.
o Review contractor risk assessments, Job Safety Analyses (JSAs), method statements, and lifting plans before work begins.
o Verify that contractors are trained, authorized, and equipped to perform assigned tasks safely.
o Conduct routine safety walks, inspections, and behavioral observations during installation and commissioning activities.
o Identify unsafe acts and conditions, escalate concerns to management, and exercise stop-work authority when necessary.
o Manage incident investigations involving contractors and ensure corrective actions are implemented.
Startup & Commissioning Safety Management
o Manage safety readiness for equipment energization, dry runs, testing, commissioning, and operational handover.
o Manage pre-startup safety reviews (PSSR), hazard analyses, and commissioning readiness meetings.
o Verify that safety guarding, interlocks, emergency stops, signage, and procedures are installed and functional.
o Ensure compliance with electrical safety, machine safety, and process safety requirements prior to startup.
o Coordinate with Engineering and Maintenance to resolve safety gaps identified during startup reviews.
Site Safety Administration & Daily Operations
o Manage day-to-day safety for ongoing production operations.
o Conduct routine and ad-hoc safety inspections, audits, and risk assessments across the site.
o Monitor compliance with safety procedures, permits, and standard operating instructions.
o Track safety observations, near misses, corrective actions, and improvement initiatives to closure using site systems.
o Manage incident reporting, investigations, root cause analysis, and corrective action tracking.
o Maintain site safety documentation, records, and metrics required for compliance and audits.
o Manage safety related onboarding and orientation programs for employees, contractors, and visitors.
o Manage, coordination, schedule, and track mandatory safety training and certifications.
o Deliver or support safety briefings, and awareness campaigns.
o Maintain strong production-floor presence to coach employees and contractors on safe behaviors.
o Identify resources for, or create safety related training materials as needed.
o Actively promote a proactive safety culture focused on hazard identification and risk reduction.
o Develop programs to promote the safety programs across the organization.
Coordination, Communication & Reporting
o Work closely with Human Resources, Maintenance, Engineering, Production, and Quality, teams to identify and mitigate safety risks.
o Communicate safety expectations clearly to contractors, supervisors, and employees.
o Prepare and present safety reports, dashboards, and key performance indicators (KPIs) to site leadership.
o Support implementation of corporate EHS programs, standards, and continuous improvement initiatives at the site level.
o Serve as a point of contact during internal audits, external audits, and regulatory inspections.
o File claims with L&I, provide appropriate claim related documentation to injured employees, follow up and monitoring of open claims.
o Work with Human Resources on return to work programs.
o Manage regular safety meetings.
Authority & Accountability
o Authorized to stop work when unsafe conditions or behaviors pose an immediate risk.
o Accountable for timely reporting and closure of safety actions within assigned areas.
o Responsible for maintaining professional judgment and consistency in safety enforcement.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety, Engineering, Environmental Health, or a related field is strongly desired.
5-10 years of experience in a safety role in industrial, manufacturing, construction, or commissioning.
At least 2 years experience in a food manufacturing environment.
Strong working knowledge of contractor safety management and startup/commissioning safety.
Familiarity with local safety regulations and international standards (e.g., OSHA, ISO 45001), safety/OSHA certifications preferred.

Excellent observation, risk assessment, and problem-solving skills.
Clear and confident communication, including the ability to challenge unsafe practices.
Organized, detail-oriented, and capable of managing multiple safety activities simultaneously.
Proficient in basic reporting tools and safety management systems.
Proficient computer skills including Microsoft Office Suite
Working Conditions
Regular production-floor and field presence with exposure to noise, various climates such as humid, hot temperatures or cool temperatures.
Exposure to manufacturing and construction environments.
Ability to work at a desk up to 50% of the time.
