Northern Star (Pogo) LLC has a challenging and rewarding opportunity for a Safety & Training Officer at our world-class Pogo operation in Alaska on a 15 day on, 13 day off schedule.

What's the role?

The Safety Training Officer reports to the Senior Safety Training Officer. The primary role is leading the development, maintenance and standardization of training programs for Northern Star Resources staff, working at the Company's Pogo Operations.

Duties include:

  • Provide continuous support, guidance and direction to personnel and contractors for all training requirements.
  • Implement the NSR-Pogo OHS onboarding induction program for all NSR business units.
  • Review site access requests to ensure required training has been completed and documented as per Pogo Site Access Procedure, ensuring all persons entering Pogo have completed the relevant inductions.
  • Conduct and maintain records for MSHA Annual Refresher Training.
  • Facilitate training, inductions, and professional development sessions for all levels of the business.
  • Develop and conduct OHS training for NSR employees.
  • Monitor quality of INX data.
  • Conduct and review departmental training needs analysis, for training to be provided by OHS.
  • Continually monitor OHS-provided training of all site personnel to ensure requirements and documentation are maintained current to Company's requirements as well as those of MSHA.
  • Evaluate training effectiveness by conducting field task observations and auditing implementation of OHS systems and processes.
  • Maintain an accurate and full account of all training, inductions, and assessments conducted, using the appropriate systems.
  • Assist with the development of OHS procedures and revisions.
  • Conduct inspections and accompany supervisors on required inspections for their areas.
  • Enter data in INX as required.
  • Facilitate delivery of results on quoted targets.
  • Apply and promote problem solving and analytical skills.
  • Liaise with NSMS for continual improvement of the onboarding program.
  • Participate in risk assessments and JHAs of site work activities and conditions.

The specifics:

  • MSHA Approved Instructor (Blue Card certified).
  • Demonstrated experience in competency-based training and assessment methods and delivery of training materials.
  • Strong planning and organizational skills.
  • Effective written, verbal, and communication skills to satisfy training, safety, and electronic message transmission policies of the company.
  • Demonstrated computer skills in Windows environment with experience in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook. Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Knowledge of learning management systems and web delivery.
  • An understanding of mining and minerals processing operations.
  • Critical thinking skills and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work efficiently with minimal supervision, in a team environment, and adapt to changing priorities.
  • Ability to assume increasing levels of responsibility and manage deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain or exceed best industry practice.
  • Flexibility to adapt to improved procedures and practices.
  • Emergency response experience in mining industry.
  • First Aid Certificate.

Working a 15 days on, 13 days off rotating schedule of days and nights, up to 12 hours a day or more at a remote campsite. Extreme conditions, including but not limited to extreme and changing weather conditions, dust, mud, varying levels of noise, varying degrees of light and dark, in and around artificial light and in a confined work area.

Employees are required to stay on site at the company provided camp during the work rotation. Camp facilities provide dining service, games room, exercise & weight room, sauna, and accommodation rooms. Dormitory rooms have a land line phone, great Wi-Fi & cable TV. Cell service is available through Wi-Fi. The Company provides a bus service to and from Fairbanks, Delta Junction and Tok, Alaska.
