Princeton University Press (PUP) seeks a Midwest Sales Representative to join the Marketing & Sales team. Reporting to the Director of North American Sales this role is responsible for driving revenue growth and managing PUP’s relationships with independent, university, and specialist booksellers, and other retail partners in the territory. The focus of role is to promote PUP’s and distribution client titles through in-person and virtual sales calls, trade events, and strategic promotions. Utilizes CRM and digital catalog tools for tracking and reporting, collaborates with marketing and publicity teams, and manages travel within the region. This is a full-time remote position with comprehensive and industry-leading benefits that include a focus on wellness.
Specific Responsibilities Include:
  • Sell the full range of company PUP and distribution client titles (frontlist and backlist) to independent bookstores, academic accounts, and other retail partners across the territory.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for accounts, establishing strong relationships and providing timely, open communication.
  • Conduct in-person sales calls and virtual presentations to promote titles and maximize sales opportunities.
  • Collaborate with marketing and publicity teams to identify promotional opportunities and author events.
  • Maximize backlist exposure through inventory reviews and thematic, seasonal, or regional promotions.
  • Attend regional trade shows, author signings, and industry events within the territory.
  • Actively participate in sales conferences, team calls, in-house meetings, and provide regular feedback in call reports on market trends and opportunities.
  • Utilize CRM platforms and digital resources to track performance, analyze data, and deliver engaging presentations.
  • Manage the distribution of sales materials, including timely mailing of galleys and promotional copies to accounts within the territory.
  • Plan and manage travel itineraries and budgets to increase productivity and sales.
  • Bachelor’s Degree preferred and a minimum 3 years of direct sales experience; with in-depth understanding of book retail and distribution.
  • The incumbent is expected to reside within the territory which currently includes Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, North Dakota, Nebraska, Ohio, South Dakota, Wisconsin.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a sales team.
  • Demonstrated excellence in written and verbal communication, with the ability to convey information clearly and persuasively
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to prioritize multiple projects.
  • Proficiency with computers, CRM platforms, and virtual meeting tools.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel extensively within the territory (20–40% travel required).
  • Experience with independent bookstores or academic accounts.
  • Skilled in analyzing sales metrics and market data to identify growth opportunities.
  • Demonstrates autonomy, initiative, and adaptability in a sales environment.
  • Passion for books and the publishing industry.
  • Familiarity with Edelweiss and other industry tools is a plus.
  • Demonstrated accuracy, organizational skills, and attention to detail.
  • Proficiency across various modes of communication.
  • Capability to interact appropriately and respectfully with others.
  • Ability to adapt to changes in workload and to manage multiple tasks and deadlines simultaneously.
  • Capacity to work independently for long periods of time.
  • Ability to travel extensively by car, air, or other means, including overnight stays as required.
  • Attendance at national and regional sales meetings as required.

Base Salary: $65,000/year plus extensive benefits package. Starting salary may be negotiable based on relevant skills and prior experience.
