Sample Preparation Technician

JOB DESCRIPTION

The Sample Preparation Technician performs the physical drying, dividing, crushing, and mixing of gross samples of coal and coke to obtain a representative analysis sample for further laboratory testing. This is tough, sometimes dirty, rigorous work that always requires safe work habits and critical thinking. The technician is responsible for maintaining sample integrity throughout the preparation process.

The technician will on a routine basis perform the following duties:

• Receive and verify the identity of gross samples and report any problems to the supervisor.
• Divide the gross samples for drying or other testing.
• Dry the samples using laboratory moisture ovens.
• Crush the dried samples using pulverization equipment.
• Mix and bottle the samples for submitting to the laboratory.
• Store and maintain reserve samples.
• Clean and organize the work area(s).
• The technician may be required to perform assigned laboratory tests and record data according to work instructions.
• The technician may occasionally substitute for field personnel if required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• Must be hardworking, self-motivated, and very reliable/dependable.
• Must be able to learn quickly and follow precise work instructions.
• Must be able to organize and pay close attention to detail.
• Must be able to work independently and unsupervised.
• Must be able to lift 50 pounds and work for extended periods on his/her feet.
• A valid VA driver’s license and dependable transportation is required.
• High School diploma or GED is required.
• Experience is preferred.

SCHEDULE

• Tuesday - Saturday from 2:30 pm to 11:00 pm
• Training schedule: Sunday - Thursday from 2:30 pm to 11:00 pm

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $18.00 - $21.00 per hour

Expected hours: 40 per week
