Sandblaster / Abrasive Blasting Technician

Position Summary
The Sandblaster is responsible for preparing oilfield tubulars, pipe, fittings, and related equipment for protective coating applications through abrasive blasting operations. This position ensures surfaces meet customer specifications and industry standards for cleanliness and profile requirements prior to coating. The Sandblaster must safely operate blasting equipment while maintaining production schedules, quality standards, and facility safety requirements.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Operate abrasive blasting equipment to clean and prepare steel surfaces for coating applications.
- Blast pipe, tubular products, fittings, and other components to specified surface preparation standards (e.g., SSPC, NACE, customer specifications).
- Verify surface cleanliness and anchor profile requirements using appropriate inspection tools.
- Load, unload, and position materials using overhead cranes, forklifts, or material handling equipment as authorized.
- Perform pre-operation inspections and routine maintenance on blasting equipment.
- Monitor blast media quality and replenish media as needed.
- Maintain blast rooms, recovery systems, dust collectors, and work areas in a clean and organized condition.
- Identify and report equipment malfunctions, safety concerns, and quality issues to supervisors.
- Follow production schedules and work instructions to meet customer deadlines.
- Complete production, quality, and maintenance documentation accurately.
- Assist coating, packaging, and shipping departments as needed.
- Comply with all company safety policies, environmental regulations, and PPE requirements.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED preferred.
- Previous industrial sandblasting, abrasive blasting, manufacturing, or coating experience preferred.
- Ability to read and understand work orders, production schedules, and safety procedures.
- Basic understanding of surface preparation standards and coating requirements preferred.
- Ability to use measuring and inspection tools.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, and climb for extended periods.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds regularly.
- Ability to work in industrial environments with exposure to dust, noise, vibration, and varying temperatures.
- Ability to wear required PPE, including:
- Blast helmet
- Respiratory protection
- Safety glasses
- Hearing protection
- Protective clothing and gloves
- Steel-toed boots
Work Environment
- Industrial oil and gas coating facility.
- Exposure to blasting media, dust collection systems, heavy equipment, and moving machinery.
- Indoor and outdoor work depending on facility operations.
- Overtime and weekend work may be required to meet production demands.
Safety Responsibilities
- Follow all OSHA, company, customer, and environmental requirements.
- Participate in safety meetings, training, and inspections.
- Immediately report unsafe conditions, incidents, or near misses.
- Properly inspect and maintain PPE and blasting equipment before use.
- Adhere to lockout/tagout, confined space, and hazard communication procedures as applicable.
Preferred Skills
- Experience with steel pipe, OCTG, line pipe, or tubular coating operations.
- Knowledge of SSPC-SP and NACE surface preparation standards.
- Experience in oilfield service, manufacturing, or industrial coating environments.
