Scenic Technician

The Scenic Technician is responsible for the execution of all scenic elements for a live event production. This includes the ability to read and understand plans, constructing, and painting sets and stages. The Scenic Technician works closely with Audio, Video and Lighting technicians to ensure that the vision for the production is achieved. He or she also works with the Head of Scenic Design to ensure that the design can be executed within the budget and timeframe.

The Scenic Technician must be able to work within the parameters set by the Head of Scenic Design and Production Manager, while also being able to take creative risks and push the boundaries of the design. He or she must be able to work well under pressure and be able to adapt to changes quickly. The Scenic Technician must also be able to work well within a team and take direction from the Head of Scenic and Fabrication.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Building of sets for live events such as galas, weddings, corporate and social events
  • Construct sets such as staging, platforms, framework for drapery, etc.
  • Ensuring that all set construction work is completed on time and within the provided budget
  • Ensure that sets are safe and meet all provided technical specifications
  • Attend rehearsals and make changes to sets as necessary

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • Experience with woodworking, carpentry, welding, and other construction techniques
  • 3-5 years professional experience as a scenic technician or assistant scenic technician
  • Exceptional creativity, imagination, and artistic ability
  • Strong visualization skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently and with a team
  • Ability to problem-solve and improvise
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

Physical abilities

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand or walk for extended periods of time; reach for tools and objects with hands and arms; climb stairs/ladders; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; ability to bend, twist and sit. The ideal candidate must be able to perform repetitive motions and tasks in a non-climate-controlled environment.

This position is non-exempt. Standard warehouse working hours are Monday through Friday, 9 AM to 5 PM. Onsite working hours will often fall outside the standard 9 AM to 5 PM times. Overnight and extended shifts may be required based on Event Production Schedules. Overtime is often required during high-volume months.
