Scheduler/Dispatcher - Transportation Department

The impact you will have: As a Scheduler/Dispatcher in San José Unified, you will play a vital role in ensuring students have safe, reliable, and efficient transportation to and from school and district activities. You will coordinate routes, communicate critical transportation information, and respond to changing needs with accuracy and professionalism. Through strong organization, problem-solving, and customer service, you will help keep transportation operations running smoothly, ensuring students, families, schools, and staff receive dependable support every day. As a Scheduler/Dispatcher, you will be responsible for (but not limited to):

  • Developing and maintaining efficient transportation routes to ensure safe and on-time service for students
  • Coordinating daily transportation schedules and dispatching buses to meet district needs
  • Monitoring and adjusting routes and schedules to improve efficiency and service levels
  • Communicating route information, schedule changes, and transportation updates to families, schools, drivers, and other stakeholders
  • Coordinating transportation for field trips, special programs, and district events
  • Resolving transportation concerns, conflicts, and service issues with a customer service mindset
  • Maintaining accurate records, reports, and routing information using district systems and technology
  • Collaborating effectively with drivers, school staff, families, and district departments to support transportation operations
  • Driving as a relief or substitute driver as needed
  • Supporting compliance with transportation policies, procedures, and safety requirements
  • Assisting in accomplishing department and district goals while maintaining regular and punctual attendance


What you need for this position:

  • Completion of 12th grade or equivalent, or any combination of education, experience, and training that meets or exceeds the standards of knowledge, skills, and abilities listed below
  • Two years of experience in school pupil transportation preferred
  • California Class B license
  • School Bus Driver’s Certificate
  • Commercial Medical Certificate
  • First-Aid Certificate


FMCSA Clearinghouse Registration Notice to Applicants:
This position is considered a safety sensitive position by the Department of Transportation (DOT) and the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). Effective January 6, 2020, any applicant who wishes to be considered for this position must be registered with the FMCSA Clearinghouse. Regulations require San José Unified School District to perform a full query of any individual prior to that person being hired into a safety sensitive position. Regulations also require applicants to provide consent for the full query. Consent for the full query can only be provided via the online Clearinghouse by individuals registered with the Clearinghouse.

Location:

  • Transportation Department
  • 1.0 FTE - 8hrs./day - 40 hrs./week
  • 12 Month Position
  • 6:30am - 5:30pm with a 3 hour lunch


SB 848 Child Safety & Employment Disclosure Requirement


Effective January 1, 2026, in accordance with California Senate Bill 848 (School Employee Misconduct/Child Abuse Prevention Act), applicants for employment with San José Unified are subject to enhanced child safety, training, and employment disclosure requirements.


Under SB 848, schools are required to strengthen background vetting procedures and obtain employment history information related to allegations of egregious misconduct involving students. Former employers may be contacted to release records regarding substantiated findings of misconduct as permitted by law. Failure to provide complete and accurate information regarding prior educational employment or relevant misconduct findings may result in disqualification from the hiring process or withdrawal of an offer of employment.


SB 848 also expands mandated reporter requirements and requires annual child abuse prevention training for employees and certain volunteers by July 1, 2026. All employees must comply with district-adopted child safety policies, including procedures for supervising and protecting students.
