School Library & Media Specialist
Christian Brothers Academy is a private, Catholic, coeducational college preparatory school established in 1900 by the Brothers of the Christian Schools, a religious order founded by St. John Baptist de La Salle. The student body of 7through 12graders reside in Syracuse and over 30 different surrounding communities. The school enjoys a rich and distinguished tradition of academic, spiritual, athletic, and co-curricular excellence. The typical CBA graduate matriculates directly to a 4-year college.
CBA operates with an administrative team of President, Principal, Assistant Principals for Academic Affairs, Student Affairs, and the Junior High School. The Directors of Athletics, Vice Presidents of Enrollment Management, Mission, Advancement, Finance, and Director of Guidance, have prominent roles at the school. The School Library & Media Specialist plays a vital role in supporting the academic environment of the school and directly reports to the Assistant Principal of Academic Affairs. This is a 10-month position.
POSITION DESCRIPTION:
● Oversees and supervises all activities in the Learning Commons including the audio/video room and student conference room.
● Constructs and enforces policies and procedures that facilitate a Learning Commons environment that is safe, collaborative, inclusive, and strives to meet the individual learning needs of all students.
● Collaborates with teachers and assists with research related projects.
● Integrates a research model across all grade levels, including in-service for teachers.
● Develops orientation lessons to help students distinguish differences in information among databases, printed texts, and web-based resources.
● Teaches basic library skills so students become independent and life-long learners.
● Collaborates with teachers to develop activities which stress literacy and interdisciplinary strategies.
● Meets with teachers to become familiar with curriculum programs and classroom needs for integration into multiple curriculum areas.
● Assists teachers and students in the literacy skills of using information resources and incorporating information skills into classroom curriculum.
● Participates in grade level, departmental, and staff meetings.
● Selects materials and technology which support the school’s educational philosophy and curriculum.
● Purchases new materials and updates the collection.
● Selects and provides resources and technologies needed to integrate and produce authentic learning experiences.
● Develops short and long-range goals to guide the development of the school’s library program.
● Promotes the library media program, services, and its material by maintaining a positive relationship with students, staff and parents.
● Oversees the library and media budget.
● Instructs students to be discerning, responsible, and ethical users of information.
● Maintains and enhances professional knowledge in technology and trends in information literacy.
● Collaborates with the Technology Department to monitor and implement changes in educational technology.
● Provides professional development to teachers as it relates to the integration of technology into the curriculum.
● Provides structured, and unstructured, learning opportunities to students that facilitate diverse uses of technology for students to demonstrate learning.
● Educates students on digital citizenship; develops and implements a curriculum surrounding appropriate use of technology.
● Moderates the Junior and Senior High Book Club and supervises volunteers.
● Keeps and maintains an organized catalog of Learning Commons materials.
● Work with districts to order, catalog, and manage hardcover textbooks for classroom teachers.
● Manages the distribution and collection of hardcover textbooks to teachers.
● Collaborate with teachers to routinely evaluate use of hardcover textbooks for their effectiveness in the classroom.
QUALIFICATIONS
● Well-suited for the ministry of Catholic/Lasallian education.
● Master’s degree in education or related field preferred; Two or more years experience preferred.
● Desire and ability to work collaboratively with the teachers, guidance counselors, administrators, and parents.
● Excellent organization, planning, and communication skills.
GENERAL INFORMATION
Start Date: Assume responsibilities on or about September 1, 2026
Salary/Benefits: Starting salary range of $50,500 to $52,300 based upon experience with competitive benefits, including tuition benefit; competitive retirement benefits.
