The School Resource Officer (SRO) serves as a resource for the Lawrenceburg School District, providing support to students, teachers, and staff in all matters related to law enforcement, as a liaison between the school system and the Lawrenceburg Police Department.


Work Schedule:
8-hour day shift Monday - Friday. Subject to on-call and overtime.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities include, but not limited to, the following:

  • Enforces the State of Indiana criminal laws and City of Lawrenceburg ordinances; assists school officials with enforcement of school policy and regulations regarding student conduct.
  • Protects persons and property on school premises; works through school administration to address concerns related to school safety, including building security, emergency response and evacuation plans.
  • Investigates and assists in the prosecution of any violations occurring on school premises including, but not limited to, battery, sexual assault, drug use/sale, traffic infractions; gathers information concerning criminal activity involving students on or off school grounds; affects arrests as necessary and appropriate.
  • Assists with traffic control during the arrival and dismissal of students.
  • Complete accurate and complete reports of events that take place on school grounds including, but not limited to, criminal investigations, traffic related crashes and other significant events.
  • Provides classroom instruction on law and law enforcement related matters, as approved by police and school administration.
  • Speaks before parents and community groups on law enforcement and school safety related topics.
  • Serves as a resource for students, enabling them to be associated with a law enforcement figure in the school environment. Provides guidance and consultation for students experiencing problems related to law enforcement; makes appropriate referrals.
  • Meets with administrators, faculty, staff, parents, and students on an individual basis to deal with specific issues or problems related to preventing juvenile delinquency.
  • Acts as a liaison between students, parents, school faculty and staff, child protective services, juvenile prosecutors, juvenile court, and probation officers; facilities communications between all parties.
  • Maintains control of emergency incidents requiring law enforcement intervention, with assistance of the school principal, until relieved by police or fire department command personnel.
  • Documents all action taken with students and parents in a formal setting and all relevant telephone conversations.
  • Promote understanding and support for the School Resource Officer program.
  • Coordinates and schedules security for football, basketball, prom, graduation, and other school events which require police presence, in conjunction with relevant school departments and staff members.
  • Works with student assistance coordinator, school board and central office administration to develop, coordinate and evaluate new programs to meet school and department needs, such as K-9 search guidelines and policies, educational programs, and intervention programs.
  • Serves on various committees dealing with the development or improvement of school guidelines.
  • Assist other agencies with investigations involving assigned school; act as a liaison with other agencies and school systems in assisting with the development of similar programs at their agencies or schools.
  • Assists with community-oriented policing programs while school is not in session. Including, but not limited to, summer camps, ordinance violations, park safety, and personal interactions with youth within the City of Lawrenceburg.
  • Other duties may be performed as directed by the Assistant Police Chief.

  • Must have a Valid Driver’s License.
  • High School Diploma or Equivalent required.
  • Must have at least one (1) year experience as a School Resource Officer.
  • Must be able to successfully complete and meet the training requirements of the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy within one (1) year.
  • Must meet and maintain the training requirements prescribed by Indiana Law.
  • Knowledge of law enforcement procedures and methods including traffic, officer safety, investigation, report writing, and data systems.
  • Knowledge of criminal law procedures such as search and seizure arrests, interrogation, confession, evidence, crime scene protection, due process, and Court procedures.
  • Knowledge of criminal and traffic law.
  • Working knowledge of social service agencies in the community.
  • Working knowledge of business, educational civic and social organization in the assigned area.
  • Knowledge of Lawrenceburg School Corporation property including public access roads and entrances. Knowledge of school locations, classroom layouts, external facilities, and maintenance buildings.
  • Knowledge of how to locate and use bus route mapping.
  • Ability to operate vehicle safely even at high speeds under less-than-ideal conditions or weather.
  • Ability to use weapons accurately and safely.
  • Ability to use a two-way radio both for law enforcement and school functions.
  • Ability to communicate with the public in situations which are highly emotional or hostile.
  • Ability to observe and report observations accurately and in detail.
  • Ability to establish rapport with individuals and groups of different ages, races, and values.
  • Knowledge of departmental rules and regulations, and departmental general orders.
  • Ability to appropriately respond to emergencies from off-duty status.

  • Ability to stand or sit for long periods of time, sometimes in extreme weather conditions.
  • Ability to pursue suspects by running, climbing stairs, forcing entry, scaling walls, and jumping fences, and ability to sustain physical effort in situations of personal danger or danger to others.
  • Stoop, kneel, crouch, bend, reach.
