Police Officer (School Resource Officer) Position Summary The School Police Officer, also known as a School Resource Officer (SRO), is a certified law enforcement professional assigned to a school campus to ensure a safe and secure learning environment. The officer builds positive relationships with students, staff, and parents while enforcing laws, preventing crime, and serving as a mentor and role model for adolescents.Key Responsibilities Law Enforcement & SafetyEnforce federal, state, and local laws on school property.Respond to emergencies, disturbances, and criminal incidents.Conduct investigations involving students, staff, or visitors when necessary.Collaborate with school administrators on safety protocols and threat assessments.Monitor school grounds and surrounding areas to deter criminal activity. Prevention & EducationProvide classroom presentations on topics such as drug prevention, bullying, cyber safety, and conflict resolution.Mentor and counsel students, particularly those at risk.Promote positive behavior and support restorative practices when appropriate.Participate in safety drills and emergency preparedness planning. Community EngagementBuild positive relationships with students to foster trust and approachability.Serve as a liaison between the school and local law enforcement agencies.Communicate with parents and guardians regarding safety concerns.Attend school events and extracurricular activities as needed.
Administrative DutiesMaintain accurate reports and documentation of incidents.Assist in reviewing and updating school safety policies.Collaborate with school counselors and administrators on student interventions.QualificationsHigh school diploma or GED required; associates or bachelors degree in criminal justice or related field preferred.Current certification as a law enforcement officer in the state of employment.Minimum of 23 years of law enforcement experience preferred.Experience working with adolescents strongly preferred.Strong communication, conflict resolution, and interpersonal skills.Ability to work effectively in a school environment and with diverse populations.Skills & CompetenciesKnowledge of juvenile law and adolescent development.Crisis intervention and de-escalation skills.Cultural competency and sensitivity.Sound judgment and decision-making under pressure.Ability to balance enforcement with
