Science Communications and Outreach Associate, Civic Science Fellowship | RockEDU Sciene Outreach

Organization Overview: RockEDU connects scientific and non-scientific communities to engage in the wonder of science as a justice-centered process integral to our humanity. Our primary audiences are scientists, K-12 educators, high school students, and undergraduate students. Our initiatives and resources can be accessed in person, via placed-based mentorship programs, lectures and/or workshops, or online, via streaming services like Zoom and/or RockEDU Online. Overview:

The Rockefeller University seeks a Science Communications and Outreach Associate to participate in the Civic Science Fellows program and lead a community-engaged project focused on improving communication and trust around hepatitis B (Hep B) healthcare among Chinese and Chinese American communities in NYC. This 18-month (September 2026-March 2028), grant-funded position is supported by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Institute for Global Infectious Disease Research at Rockefeller and is part of the Civic Science Fellows program. The Fellow will work at the intersection of community engagement, science communication, and media production, collaborating with community members and local organizations to co-create new approaches to health communication.

This is an in-person role based in NYC.

Responsibilities:

• Conduct a listening and landscape-learning phase within NYC Chinese and Chinese American communities
• Build relationships with community members, organizations, and communicators
• Co-create, with impacted community members, and test 4–6 culturally relevant media pieces grounded in community perspectives and Hep B research & healthcare
• Collaborate with leadership across Rockefeller (SNF Institute, RockEDU, Communications & Public Affairs)
• Document the process to support a replicable model for participatory communication
• Co-manage project advisory board representing a broad range of relevant expertise
• Lead the editorial development and community-centered storytelling strategy for a special season of Beyond the Lab, RockEDU’s podcast, in collaboration with high school / undergraduate student science communication interns and a professional producer/editor
• Mentor and support high school and undergraduate students in podcast interviewing, narrative development, and community-engaged science communication
• Participate in the Civic Science Fellows cohort activities (~20% time)

Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree
• Fluent in Mandarin and/or Cantonese
• At least 3 years of experience with storytelling and media production skills (video, audio, writing, digital)
• Collaborative, adaptable, and comfortable working across communities and institutions
• Interest in deepening understanding and practice of civic science

• Fluent in Fuzhounese
• Experience guiding collaborative storytelling, journalism, podcasting, or community-centered media production

Compensation Range: Min: USD $75,000.00/Yr. Compensation Range: Max: USD $90,000.00/Yr.
