Scientist I/II - Phage & Bacterial R&D

About the role
We’re seeking a hands-on Scientist to support a fast-moving microbiology and molecular biology R&D program focused on bacteriophages and gram-negative bacteria (including E. coli and Pseudomonas).

What you'll do

You'll collaborate with the R&D team to design and execute experiments related to our phage engineering. You will also work closely with our machine learning team to incorporate those results into the models we build.

Core Responsibilities

  • Design phage library assembly protocols for different phages in our bank and improve existing protocols
  • Analyze NGS data from our phage/bacteria screening
  • Perform routine molecular biology workflows, including PCR, agarose gels, basic molecular cloning, and DNA/RNA handling.
  • Conduct bacterial culture work with BSL-2 gram-negative organisms: picking colonies, streaking, culturing, preparing samples, and maintaining strain stocks.
  • Maintain excellent documentation in an R&D environment (lab notebooking; Benchling experience is a plus).

Required qualifications

  • PhD in Microbiology, Virology, Molecular Biology, Bioengineering or a related field. Post-doctoral experience is a strong asset.
  • Experience with phage engineering or other relevant lab experience in either an industry or hands-on academic environment
  • Demonstrated track record of scientific productivity and publications
  • Familiarity with NGS techniques and bioinformatics analysis
  • Ability to work on-site in a BSL-2 lab and complete required safety training.

About Tabula Bioscience

Tabula is developing a new class of phage therapies to address antibiotic resistant infections. We are a team of phage, machine learning, and genomics researchers from UW Madison, MIT, and Harvard.
