What we are looking for:
Our residency program is expanding and requires a physician to head the addiction portion of the educational experience. Historically, our Crisis Center and addiction consults have been managed by nurse practitioners, but with growing demand and the need for resident supervision, we are seeking a dedicated physician to elevate our addiction services

Role Overview

<li>Primary Focus: Addiction medicine (majority of practice)</li>
<li>Secondary Duties: General psychiatry (home call on weekdays; rotating weekend coverage if psychiatrist)</li>
<li>Setting: Inpatient and consult-based, with responsibilities including:</li>

<li>Direct care in our 6-bed Crisis Center (detoxification, stabilization, and rehabilitation resource allocation)</li>

Be Well is located on the Be Well Orange County campus, which brings together mental health care services uniting public, private, academic, and faith-based organizations in a cooperative partnership that helps facilitate communication, bridge gaps, and eliminate barriers to care. The result is a more compassionate system of care that works better for everyone in the community. The 24/7/365 residential substance use disorder (SUD) treatment program provides 3.1, 3.3, and 3.5 ASAM levels of care for males and females, as well as 3.2 withdrawal management. There are 15 beds allocated for 3.1/3.5, 15 beds for 3.3and 12 beds for 3.2, for a total of 42 beds.
 
The part-time (20 hours a week) Addiction Medicine Physician (AMP) oversees the management of withdrawal symptoms and the initiation, ongoing treatment, and support of Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) for clients with alcohol and drug use disorders. The AMP handles tasks such as taking medical histories, conducting physical exams, utilizing screening tools, ordering and interpreting lab tests, and diagnosing and treating common medical conditions. Additionally, the AMP works closely with the Intake Department to ensure the safe admission of patients into detoxification and residential treatment programs for substance use disorders.
 
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
 Assessment and Diagnosis
 <ul>
<li>Assess drug and alcohol use and determine the level of severity using screening tools and current DSM criteria.</li>
<li>Analyze and interpret patient history, symptoms, physical findings, and/or diagnostic information to develop appropriate diagnoses.</li>
<li>Diagnose and treat illnesses and injuries related to addiction use disorder, such as HIV PrEP, Hep C treatment, and other incidental medical services.</li>
</ul>
Patient Care and Coordination
 <ul>
<li>Take medical histories, perform physical examinations, order and interpret laboratory tests, and diagnose and treat common illnesses and injuries.</li>
<li>Provide oversight for Advanced Practice Providers, including entering into a Collaborative Agreement with them, providing supervision, participating in clinical review, performance appraisal, peer review, and hiring and termination of Physicians and clinical support staff.</li>
<li>Collaborate with behavioral health teams.</li>
<li>Consult with the SoCal Director of Addiction Medicine for treatment or referral options.</li>
</ul>
Treatment and Management
 <ul>
<li>Determine medication withdrawal management for patients detoxing from drugs and alcohol to prevent withdrawal complications.</li>
<li>Determine the appropriate level of treatment based on current drug and alcohol use.</li>
<li>Prescribe various Medication Assisted Treatments to reduce harm and prevent complications from drug and alcohol use.</li>
<li>Educate and prescribe opioid reversal agents such as naloxone to patients to reduce harm from drug use.</li>
<li>Educate, support, and care for patients receiving medication-assisted treatment in continuity and maintenance.</li>
<li>Assist in physician cross-coverage in other facilities where needed and as appropriate.</li>
</ul>
Documentation and Compliance
 <ul>
<li>Maintain complete and detailed records of patients' history, assessment, and health care plans.</li>
<li>Oversee medication room management, including performing routine audits to ensure compliance with policies and procedures, and reporting findings back to the SoCal Director of Addiction Medicine regularly.</li>
</ul>
People Management
 <ul>
<li>Interview, select, hire, and terminate employees in collaboration with Human Resources.</li>
<li>Manage assigned staff such as Advanced Practice Providers, Nurse Practitioners, Physician Assistants, Interns, Volunteers, and other assigned personnel.</li>
<li>Ensure that all assigned personnel are in compliance withHealthRIGHT360’s policies, procedures, position expectations, performance goals, and contractual requirements.</li>
<li>Provide ongoing feedback, coaching, support, and conduct formal performance evaluations in a timely manner.</li>
<li>Identify direct reports’ strengths and weaknesses and strive to develop each team member to their fullest potential.</li>
<li>Deliver and arrange training and resources to ensure that direct reports are successful in their roles and to ensure that the medical behavioral health team is in compliance with all standard and regulatory requirements.</li>

Ensure proper coverage of the program by creating work schedules and approving time away from work.

QUALIFICATIONS
 
Education, Certification, or Licensure

Responsible for nursing assessment, monitoring and support of outpatients and/or inpatients by the Addiction Medicine Department.<div> 

Essential Responsibilities:</div>

<li>Conducts Nursing assessments of patients, screening for detoxification needs and other health-related concerns.</li> 
<li>Based on preliminary assessment and/or diagnosis, recommends the next level of treatment and liaisons with appropriate staff to ensure continuity of care.</li> 
<li>Implements outpatient detoxification protocols and administers medications and processes laboratory requests consistent with physician orders.</li> 
<li>Evaluates and documents the efficacy of treatments and/or medications taken.</li> 
<li>Develops and presents (as directed) patient-oriented lectures and materials or health-related and program concerns Functions as a member of the multidisciplinary treatment team, making appropriate referrals, advocating for patient needs, coordinating care delivery, and maintaining/improving quality standards.</li> 
<li>Provides consultation services to physicians and nurses within other Kaiser medical departments as directed and provides clear, concise and targeted evaluations of patient need for Addiction Medicine continuing care services.</li> 
<li>Provides appropriate nursing care in support of other program activities.</li> 
<li>Orders, receives and distributes pharmaceuticals and medical supplies as necessary.</li> 
<li>Assists in the development of nursing policies, practices and procedures as related to the Department of Addiction Medicine.</li></ul><div>
