About the role
Job Summary:
AI Construction & Technology Intern
Foundation Strategies and Construction Inc.Location: San Jose / Bay Area, California Job
Type: Part-Time Internship Compensation: $24–$28 per hour, depending on experience Schedule: Approximately 15–25 hours per week
About the Opportunity
Foundation Strategies and Construction Inc. is seeking a motivated AI Construction & Technology Intern interested in working at the intersection of construction, artificial intelligence, and emerging construction technology.
This is not a traditional construction internship and it is not a software-development position.
We are looking for someone who is curious about how AI can be applied to real-world construction operations, particularly structural concrete, foundations, civil/sitework, grading and excavation, estimating, preconstruction, and project management.
The selected candidate will work directly with an experienced construction professional to explore, develop, test, and improve practical AI-assisted construction workflows.
This is an excellent opportunity for a student or recent graduate interested in construction management, civil engineering, structural engineering, construction technology, architecture, artificial intelligence, or entrepreneurship.
What You’ll Work On
The intern will assist with projects involving:
● AI-assisted construction plan review
● Structural and civil drawing analysis
● Concrete quantity takeoffs
● Reinforcing-steel scope and quantity review
● Grading and excavation takeoffs
● Earthwork quantity analysis
● Foundation and retaining-wall scope development
● Engineering and geotechnical report analysis
● Construction estimating
● Proposal preparation
● Scope-of-work development
● Constructability reviews
● Identifying missing scope and potential conflicts
● RFI development
● Change-order documentation
● Project correspondence
● Field documentation
● Construction research
● AI prompt and workflow development
● Testing AI tools for construction applications
● Organizing construction knowledge and project information
● Researching emerging AI and construction-technology platforms
● Developing repeatable AI-assisted construction processes
AI & Construction Technology
A major part of this internship will involve exploring how current AI tools can improve construction workflows.
Potential projects may include developing AI-assisted processes for:
Plans → Takeoffs → Estimates → Proposals
Engineering Reports → Construction Scope → Pricing
Project Documents → Scope Gaps → RFIs
Field Information → Documentation → Change Orders
Historical Project Information → Construction Knowledge Database
The goal is to determine where AI can realistically improve productivity while maintaining experienced human construction judgment and verification.
Construction Exposure
The intern may work with construction information involving:
● Structural concrete
● Foundations
● Foundation repair
● Heavy civil/sitework
● Grading and excavation
● Mass excavation
● Basement construction
● Retaining walls
● Reinforcing steel
● Slabs-on-grade
● Drilled piers
● Grade beams
● Below-grade waterproofing
● PREPRUFE® waterproofing systems
● Drainage
● Dewatering
● Backfill and compaction
● Construction estimating and preconstruction
You are not expected to already know all of these areas. Part of the opportunity is learning how real construction projects are estimated, planned, documented, and built.
Who We’re Looking For
We are looking for someone who is:
● Highly interested in Artificial Intelligence
● Interested in construction and construction technology
● Comfortable experimenting with new technology
● Curious and willing to learn
● Detail-oriented
● Organized
● Able to research unfamiliar subjects
● Comfortable working independently
● Able to communicate ideas clearly
● Interested in solving real business and construction problems
Most importantly, we want someone who enjoys asking:
“How could AI make this construction process better?”
Preferred Background
Students or recent graduates studying any of the following are encouraged to apply:
● Construction Management
● Civil Engineering
● Structural Engineering
● Architecture
● Construction Engineering
● Construction Technology
● Artificial Intelligence
● Computer Science
● Data Analytics
● Business / Entrepreneurship
● Related technical fields
Candidates with a combination of construction knowledge and AI interest are especially encouraged to apply.
AI Experience
You do not need to be an AI engineer or programmer.
However, experience using or experimenting with tools such as ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, or other generative-AI platforms is strongly preferred.
Experience developing prompts, custom workflows, automations, AI agents, document-analysis processes, spreadsheets, databases, or construction software is a plus.
Construction Technology Experience
Experience with construction software or estimating tools is helpful but not required.
Exposure to platforms or tools involving:
● Construction estimating
● Digital takeoffs
● PDF plan review
● Project management
● Scheduling
● Document management
● Spreadsheets
● Construction databases
is a plus.
What You’ll Learn
This internship provides exposure to both traditional construction and emerging AI technology.
You will have the opportunity to learn about:

Growth Opportunity
This internship is intended to be more than a short-term administrative position.
We are exploring and developing new ways to combine construction expertise with Artificial Intelligence, and the right candidate may have the opportunity to grow with this initiative.
Depending on performance, interests, and business development, the position could evolve into work involving:
● AI Construction Consulting
● Construction Technology
● Preconstruction
● AI Implementation
● Construction Estimating
● Product/Workflow Development
● Business Development
● Construction Operations
Compensation
$24–$28 per hour, depending on experience and capabilities.
Approximately 15–25 hours per week initially.
Compensation and responsibilities may be reviewed as the intern develops greater independence and contributes to AI and construction-technology initiatives.
How to Apply
Please submit your resume along with a brief introduction explaining:
1. Your current area of study or professional background.
2. Your interest in construction.
3. Your experience using AI tools.
4. Why the combination of AI + construction interests you.
5. One example of something you believe AI could improve within the construction industry.
We are more interested in curiosity, initiative, problem-solving ability, and willingness to learn than in finding someone who already knows everything.
