Majority of work is conducted indoors; however, occasional duties may require leaving the Pet Care Center for tasks such as bank deposits, merchandise transport, or community events.</li><li>
The role requires frequent standing and walking, as well as bending, kneeling, reaching, and lifting.</li><li>
Ability to safely lift and move merchandise, supplies, or animals weighing up to 50 pounds.</li><li>

** The Shelter Coordinator position provides &ldquo;rotating 30 minutes of break time coverage&rdquo; to the Shelter program</p><p>
staff in the Denver Metro Area Shelters. This is a rotating position where the Shelter Coordinator will travel to</p><p>
assigned sites to relieve staff for their 30-minute break. The Shelter Coordinator position is responsible for</p><p>
managing the facility (in the time they are covering). The programs under Shelter purview serve multiple</p><p>
populations in different programs: a Safe Haven for chronically homeless women with mental health concerns, a</p><p>
family shelter, a Grant Per Diem program for Veteran Families and unaccompanied individuals, and a shelter for</p><p>
older women. Service modalities for all programs under RYES include Housing First Trauma Informed Care, Harm</p><p>
Reduction, Motivational Interviewing, and Crisis De-escalation. Job duties include supporting and coordinating with</p><p>
other staff in the delivery of appropriate housing stability and support services for individuals and families</p><p>
experiencing homelessness, including ensuring participants needs are met, maintaining the safety and wellbeing of</p><p>
program participants, and maintaining the cleanliness of the facility. Further, the Shelter Coordinator will have a</p><p>
basic understanding of mental health services and may have the opportunity to develop in specialty areas</p><p>
including housing, employment, legal services, benefits, or others as indicated by the needs of the program(s).</p><p><b>
Essential Duties and Responsibilities</b></p><ul><li>
Ensures that the program participants&rsquo; voices are heard, and when appropriate the participants ideas play a prominent role in programming.</li><li>
Responsible for possessing an in-depth knowledge regarding program requirements, including the referral process, support services, and field-relevant best practices.</li><li>
Demonstrates knowledge of participant-specific resources, a passion for serving the population and people experiencing homelessness, and the ability to contribute to the program-wide objectives of a diverse and dynamic team.</li><li>
Clearly documents all participant interactions along with required eligibility and demographic information. Can develop specialized knowledge related to service delivery database systems within the organization including Service Point and Homeless Management Information System (HMIS).</li><li>
Performs professional duties by maintaining confidentiality of all information and participating effectively within and across teams.</li><li>
Maintains physical and emotional safety of all program participants in the facility. Manages the milieu and addresses any program participant conflicts immediately to de-escalate. Will contact emergency personnel as necessary and will accurately and adequately complete any reports or documentation required.</li><li>
Supports team members by serving as a resource for analyzing and solving problems and staying abreast of current issues and theories within the field.</li><li>
Oversees and participates in general program facility maintenance such as assisting in cooking, cleaning, supplying linen and personal items, conducting building walk-throughs, enforcing rules, checking chore completion, setting and checking alarms, etc.</li><li><ul><li>Assists in the training and supervision of volunteers during shifts worked. Ensures proper volunteer tracking documentation and indemnity forms are completed.</li></ul></li><li>
Maintains regular front desk duties that include answering phone calls, taking messages, implementing participant intakes, accepting donations, handling mail, handing out bus pass and/or bus tickets, if applicable to the program.</li><li>
Serves as a mentor to junior personnel to develop knowledge and experience regarding best practice standards within their workgroup. May be responsible for training staff members assigned to the shift being covered.</li><li>
Performs job responsibilities in accordance with the Social Work Code of Ethics.</li><li>

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements</b></p><ul><li>Ability to be single staffed while in the facility while having the responsibility for the safety of program participants.</li><li>Ability to quickly and safely go up and down stairs regularly throughout the shift to do perimeter checks, and in cases of an emergency.</li><li>Some lifting is required but should rarely exceed 50lbs.</li></ul><p><b>
Position Type and Expected Hours of Work</b></p><ul><li>This is a permanent - part time position</li><li>While Shelter Support Coordinators are on duty, they are likely single-staffed and unless they have established coverage for an approved reason, they will be expected to stay at the facility for the entirety of their shift.</li><li>All Shelter staff are considered &ldquo;essential staff,&rdquo; requiring to be on their scheduled shifts regardless of holidays or inclement weather. POSITION SUMMARY</b><br>
The Greater Birmingham Humane Society&rsquo;s (&lsquo;the GBHS&rdquo;) Adoption Counselors (&ldquo;the Counselor&rdquo;) are the primary point of contact with visitors to the shelter. They are responsible for cordially greeting visitors, answering the telephone, and facilitating adoptions of the GBHS animals, including processing paperwork, accurate data entry, and adopter follow up. Adoptions counselors also assist in the cost-effective, sanitary, efficient and humane operation of the shelter. The Counselor assist animal care specialists by performing work related to caring for the GBHS&rsquo; animals, restocking supplies and cleaning chemicals, maintaining accurate shelter records, and providing excellent customer service to citizens.</p><p><b>
PRIMARY RELATIONSHIPS</b></p><p>

DUTIES &amp; RESPONSIBILITIES</b></p><p>
The GBHS Adoption Counselors primarily work to find forever homes for the animals in our care. Prior to opening each day, Counselors assist Animal Care Specialists with cleaning, sanitizing and setting up of all kennels.</p><p><b><i>
Morning Animal Care Duties:</i></b></p><ul><li>
Humanely handles all animals and ensures the identification of all shelter animals with appropriate tags or bands before kenneling and/or adopting.</li><li>
Provides care for the animals by cleaning their cage or kennel in a thorough and sanitary manner to prevent the spread of any infectious diseases, and by feeding each animal in accordance with their dietary requirements and posted feeding procedures.</li><li>
Develops a general knowledge of animals&rsquo; behaviors, temperaments and personality traits to assist prospective adopters in finding an animal that matches their household and family situations.</li><li>
Assists with maintaining the laundry requirements for respective areas. Ensures that all animals&rsquo; articles, bedding, dishes, and toys are washed and disinfected daily.</li><li>
Assists with daily observations of medical and behavioral issues of animals in our care by paying careful attention for signs of sickness, stress, aggressive behavior, and/or injury. Reports findings to supervisor and/or medical staff.</li><li>
Maintains records to ensure accuracy, timeliness and completeness.</li><li>
Checks and maintains supplies and equipment. Communicates inventory and supply needs as well as maintenance issues to supervisor. Stocks needed supplies in respective areas.</li><li>
Assists clinical staff in the medication and medical treatment of animals as prescribed by the veterinarian if requested.</li><li>
Maintains a high level of communication with all GBHS staff and Volunteers</li><li>
Assists in the training of adoptions volunteers. Coordinates duties with volunteer groups and community service workers in a professional and customer service manner.</li><li>
May move animals from animal holding kennels and/or transport vans to adoption kennels and vice versa.</li></ul><p><b><i>
Adoption Duties</i></b></p><ul><li>
Works collaboratively with staff to determine if animals are appropriate for adoption.</li><li>
Greets all visitors to the GBHS with enthusiasm, a professional demeanor and an offer to provide assistance or answer questions.</li><li>
Works with prospective adopters to complete the application. When a visitor expresses an interest in seeing animals, the adoption specialist facilitates the meeting between prospective adopter and animal(s) and assists in the decision-making process.</li><li>
Once an adoption has occurred, ensures that all paperwork is accurately completed, that materials in the adopter packet are reviewed with adopter(s) and that information is entered accurately and in a timely fashion in the data base.</li><li>
Within one week of the conclusion of an adoption, may be requested to follow up with adopters to answer questions and check on the transition of the adopted animal into his/her new home.</li><li>
Assists in preparing kennel cards and profiles for use on the GBHS&rsquo; website.</li><li>
Assists in conducting off-site adoption and promotional events, as requested by the Shelter Manager and/or the Chief Program Officer.</li><li>
Assists in compiling statistics on number of visitors, length of stay and other reports, as requested by the Shelter Manager.</li><li>

Represents the GBHS in a professional manner in all situations.</li><li>
