<div><div><p><b>NATURE AND PURPOSE</b><br>
Incumbent will investigate novel biometeorological and biophysical methods to quantify woody perennial crops water use and stress. Efforts of the Assistant Project Scientist will involve several cropping systems (e.g. olives, almonds, pistachios, grapes) studied in field settings typical on commercial orchards and vineyards throughout California. Work will integrate with efforts of other team members involved in the GRAPEX and T-REX projects that aim to develop, refine, and apply remotely sensed tools for use precision management of vineyard and orchard systems. Focus will be on the integration of remote sensing with field-scale micrometeorological measurement techniques aiming to develop solutions for growers.<br>
The Project Scientist makes significant and creative contributions to a research or creative project in his/her academic discipline. The appointee possesses the subject matter expertise and the creative energy necessary to function at a high level of competence. The appointee will participate in activities to increase, improve, or upgrade competency. Appointees with Project (e.g., Scientist) titles may engage in University and public service. They do not have teaching responsibilities. Although the Project Scientist is expected to work independently under the general guidance of an academic member with an independent research program (i.e., Professor, Professional Researcher, Specialist in Cooperative Extension, etc.), he/she is not required to develop an independent research program or reputation. He/she will carry out research or creative programs with supervision by an individual in an academic title that carries with it automatic Principal Investigator status. The Project Scientist does not usually serve as a Principal Investigator but may do so by exception.</p>
<p><b>MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES</b><br>

Design, develop and coordinate projects and experiments to study surface energy and mass fluxes in crops.<br>
Develop methods to quantify crop using various proximal and remote sensing systems.<br>

Publish research results in peer-reviewed journals, having a leadership role when needed.<br>

 The Center for Technology, Economics, and Development (CTED) at New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD) invites applications from individuals to be appointed as a Junior Research Scientist (AI-Blockchain Project) for a one-year period, with the possibility of renewal conditional on excellent performance.

 The Junior Research Scientist (AI-Blockchain Research) will support advanced, quantitatively intensive research at CTED with a primary focus on artificial intelligence, machine learning, mathematical modeling, and computational analysis. The Junior Research Scientist will play a central role in supporting research design, algorithmic development, data analysis, and coding tasks across CTED&rsquo;s interdisciplinary projects. Working under the direction of the Principal Investigator (PI), Dr. Yaw Nyarko, and Co-Principal Investigator (Co-PI), Dr. Ra&scaron;a Karapand&zcaron;a, the Junior Research Scientist will contribute to AI-driven and blockchain-enabled research related to commodities markets and economic development. The role requires strong foundations in mathematics and computer science, including statistical learning, optimization, simulation, and algorithmic reasoning. The successful candidate will use programming and computational tools (including Python, MATLAB, and related libraries) to develop, test, and evaluate machine learning models; review, proofread, and execute formal mathematical proofs; implement optimization and simulation-based methods; and analyze large and complex datasets. Responsibilities include supporting experimental and field-based research, preparing literature reviews, translating complex AI and mathematical findings into clear written outputs, and contributing to research reports, concept notes, and academic publications.

 Candidates must hold a Master&rsquo;s degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Mathematics or a related field (e.g., Economics with a strong mathematics background). and have less than five years of relevant research experience; or hold a Bachelor&rsquo;s degree in a relevant field with any level of research experience. Applicants must have extensive coding experience, and preferably, applicants will have experience conducting field research in emerging countries and working on randomized controlled trials (RCTs). Applicants with experience working in programming languages such as Python, JavaScript, and/or MATLAB, a strong interest in economic and quantitative research and the willingness to learn about the blockchain, are encouraged to apply. Experience in web development, blockchain, commodities markets, and technology and economic development will be considered a plus. The Pfeifer lab is a collaborative Research group within the School of Dentistry, Department of Biomaterial and Biomedical Sciences. The lab was established in 2011 and has been continuously supported by the NIH-National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, and others. We have a strong track record in the fields of Biomaterials and Polymer Chemistry, with over 150 publications and several full patents. Our focus is to develop materials solutions for use in healthcare applications (including oral) with a heavy emphasis at the interface with microbiology and host tissue interactions. We have been able to be successful in this quest thanks to a multi-disciplinary team of highly collaborative individuals, including materials scientists, clinicians, engineers, chemists and microbiologists. Dr. Carmem Pfeifer seeks an Assistant Staff Scientist with extensive knowledge of microbiology and materials science related methods to drive research projects to academic and translational goals. This person will contribute to scientific direction of numerous projects and share the management responsibilities for lab members working on those projects. Technical expertise in the area molecular biology and molecular design, as well as collaborative research approach are key to success in this role.</div>
Required Qualifications:
<ul><li>PhD in relevant field (Bioengineering, Biology, Biomaterials, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science)</li><li>
Doctoral degree in Biomedical Sciences or related fields and a minimum of 3 years of post-doctoral work experience in a research lab with a focus on material-tissue/biofilm interactions</li><li>
Intimate knowledge of molecular biology and microbiology assays</li><li>
Knowledge of how to operate various instrumentation and basic engineering principles for applications and troubleshooting with instrumentation (including at least a few of the following: Mechanical testing: universal testing machine (flexural strength, fracture toughness, dynamic mechanical analysis, rheology); Spectroscopic techniques (IR and UV-Vis, mass spec, GPC, HPLC); Imaging (SEM and confocal microscopy)</li><li>
Ability to optimize and adapt existing molecular biology protocols for analysis of modified material surfaces</li><li>
Familiarity with spatial analysis approaches such as spatial transcriptomics, especially for engineered tissues or on-chip systems</li><li>
Familiarity with technical writing, including research manuscripts, methods manuscripts, patents, and other IP documentation</li><li>
Ability to lead discussions around research projects and proactively communicate with research team members for the success of the project</li><li>
Ability to prioritize multiple tasks at one time</li><li>
Excellent communication, analytical, and organizational skills: both written and verbal</li><li>
Ability to work independently and as part of a team while being collaborative in resolving problems</li><li>
Intermediate skills with Microsoft Office (Excel, Outlook, Access, Word, and PowerPoint) on Window OS, and other advanced graphing and image design software (Prism, Origin, Photoshop, Adobe illustrator)</li><li>
Ability to use empathy and diplomacy to support trainees and other lab members</li></ul>
