<div>BASIC FUNCTION AND RESPONSIBILITY

To conduct cutting-edge research focused on the molecular mechanisms of obesity and cancer. The candidate will be responsible for lab management and assist in performing experiments in cultured cells and mice using molecular, cellular, and biochemical techniques. This appointment is for a limited duration, anticipated length of one year with the possibility of renewal for a second year. 


CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Research: Perform research activities based upon protocols developed by other research staff or principal investigator of the research project. Read and review articles as directed. As individual skills develop, analyze literature to develop hypotheses for discussion with other researchers or principal investigator.

 Experiment, Investigations, Evaluations: Read and understand protocols. Arrange and plan daily activities to prepare for research protocols. Set up and operate research materials or equipment. Perform procedures assuring fidelity to protocols. Recruit, consent and enroll research subjects; perform varied tasks in the research environment (lab, clinic, field, classroom). Adhere to safety and compliance guidelines. Collect, record, and consolidate data as directed by the Principal Investigator. Track progress of research activities. Adhere to Quality Assurance protocols to maintain validity and integrity of research data. As individual skills develop; troubleshoot, analyze, and propose modifications to protocols; perform complex techniques per protocol; test and evaluate current procedures; develop and implement procedures for monitoring data integrity; may present results at team meetings.

 Collect, Analyze and Summarize Data; Prepare Reports; Contribute to Manuscripts, Publications: Collect and track data, perform data entry for reports and maintain records of methods used. Prepare materials for reports. As skills develop, analyze data. Prepare bibliographies and abstracts for publications. May present results/findings at team and departmental meetings.

 Administrative and Project Management: Assist with IRB, ACURF or similar protocol submissions, if applicable. Track various indicators of project progress and summarize in reports to the research team. Assist in documenting compliance with safety and regulatory guidelines.

 Facilities and Equipment Management: Assist in the preparation, calibration, and maintenance of laboratory and facility equipment. Assist with procurement of supplies and materials. May initiate purchasing requests, monitor accounts/expenditures; reconcile statements.
Supervision/Staffing: As skills develop, may train, provide directions, assignments, feedback, coaching and counseling of students and newer employees.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
<ul><li> A bachelor&rsquo;s degree in a biomedical related field, animal science, veterinary technology or other related science program or equivalent combination of education and progressively responsible experience in an animal caretaking or research laboratory environment.</li></ul>
<ul><li> Excellent written and verbal communication skills as well as interpersonal relationship skills.</li></ul>
<ul><li> Experience with Microsoft Office.</li></ul>
<ul><li> Previous animal research experience in a biomedical laboratory with hands-on research.</li></ul>
<ul><li> Familiar with procedures and regulations of the Office of Animal Resources.</li></ul>
<ul><li> Ability to work independently while being reliable and efficient with time management.</li></ul> 


DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

 The Ginty Laboratory in the Department of Neurobiology at Harvard Medical School is looking for a highly motivated Research Assistant to assist in the study of the sensory responses in the parabrachial nucleus. This project utilizes mouse genetics, molecular biology, histological and behavioral approaches and electrophysiology to understand neurobiological mechanisms of touch and pain. The Research Assistant will perform a variety of basic and general laboratory research and clerical tasks under specific direction, and may be asked to perform familiar tasks independently.

 Under supervision from a post-doctoral fellow or graduate student, the Research Assistant will pursue a project involving a wide range of techniques, including setting up in-vitro biochemical reactions using frog egg extracts, electrophoresis, microscopy, Western blotting, and molecular cloning. In conducting their research, technicians will design, carry out, interpret, record, and present experiments.
 
 
 Our technicians are encouraged to take intellectual ownership of their projects. They present at lab meetings and journal clubs, contribute to manuscripts, and sometimes attend scientific conferences. ~70% of time will be dedicated to research, with the remaining time spent on activities that support the entire laboratory (see below). Working in the Walter laboratory is excellent preparation for graduate and medical school. Former technicians from the laboratory have been accepted to top Ph.D., M.D./Ph.D., and M.D. programs.

 The Department of Surgery is seeking a highly motivated and detail ‑ oriented individual to serve as the primary coordinator for a diverse portfolio of human subject research studies, including FDA-regulated clinical trials involving investigational drugs and medical devices seeking market approval.
 
The Clinical Research Assistant II (CRA II) will be responsible for coordinating assigned clinical trials and research studies as delegated by the faculty investigator and department leadership. JOB DUTIES
 Understands visit schedules, criteria and protocol requirements for low complexity trials (e.g., questionnaire, data registry, scripted); schedules research visits.
 Assists research staff by completing research protocol related tasks.
 Reviews and abstracts information from medical records including eligibility criteria.
 Enters data into case report forms or other data collection system based on research study. Assists with maintenance of study level documentation.
 Assists with data queries and possible edits for accuracy.
 Compiles data for regulatory requirements and /or deadlines for local or sponsor submissions.
 Maintains existing databases and ensures data integrity.
 Performs QA/QC clinical analysis and data checks using various databases based on trial.
 Assists with preparing annual reports and/or modifications to institutional review board (IRB). This may include reportable events (UPIRSO).
 Assist and prepare research records for formal sponsor audits or internal audits.
 Recruits and enrolls patients in research study that may include consenting patients after training and with supervision.
 With adequate training and supervision, assists with participant screening and recruitment for more complex trials.
 Conducts and documents consent for participants in studies. Assists with the development of consent plans and documents for participants.
 Identifies incomplete, inaccurate, or missing data for more complex studies and works with lead coordinator to correct errors.
 Assists with ordering and maintaining research supplies following university/department procedures, ensuring that equipment is in good working order.
 With adequate training and supervision, assists with collecting and processing specimens following established procedures/protocols.
 Assists in preparing studies for closeout, (e.g. packing files, documenting files for storage, shipping extra supplies back to sponsor).
 With adequate training/credentialing and supervision, performs study procedures such as phlebotomy, vital signs, and EKG's needed for research study. Based on research study, other procedures/equipment/services may be required.
 May perform patient care (basic skills) under the direction of PI following scope of work document.
 Duties performed may include one or more of the following core functions: a) Directly interacting with or caring for patients; b) Directly interacting with or caring for human-subjects research participants; c) Regularly maintaining, modifying, releasing or similarly affecting patient records (including patient financial records); or d) Regularly maintaining, modifying, releasing or similarly affecting human-subjects research records.
