Duties &amp; Responsibilities:</b></p>

The VCU Institute for Drug and Alcohol Studies (IDAS) advances multidisciplinary research and training on the neuroscience of addictions and related neurobehavioral disorders. Research Assistants perform a variety of routine, non-technical duties in assisting technical and professional personnel in a research laboratory setting. The Research Assistant will be expected to perform most components of data collection from human-subject volunteers required for a biomedical behavioral research study.</p>

 We are seeking a motivated and highly organized Research Assistant to support ongoing research on neurodegenerative disorders. This position will contribute to studies examining the aging dynamics of neurons in both healthy and diseased states and will assist with research aimed at identifying potential age-reversal interventions. The Research Assistant will work under the guidance of senior researchers and will have the opportunity to learn and apply a range of experimental techniques in both in vitro and in vivo (mouse model) systems.

<p>The Department of Physiology invites applications for a full-time, Assistant Professor position. We seek a dynamic, innovative researcher utilizing Large Language Models (LLMs), Generative AI, or advanced natural language processing (NLP) to advance mechanistic understanding in Neuroscience, or Gastrointestinal/Endocrinology, or Reproduction, or Respiratory Physiology. The successful candidate will establish an externally funded research program, contribute to high-quality teaching, and leverage computational approaches to revolutionize physiological research.</p>
<h4 class="jobSectionHeader"><b>Key Responsibilities</b></h4>
<ul><li><b>Research:</b> Establish and maintain a vigorous, independently funded research program focusing on the application of Large Language Models (LLMs) to physiological data, such as mining literature for mechanistic insights, modeling system interactions, or developing AI-driven diagnostic/predictive tools in their specialized field (Neuro/GI/Repro/Resp).</li>
<li><b>Teaching:</b> Deliver high-quality instruction in physiology courses to graduate and professional (medical/dental) students. Develop curriculum incorporating computational physiology and AI literacy.</li>
<li><b>Mentorship:</b> Mentor graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and undergraduate trainees in both traditional lab techniques and computational methodology.</li>
<li><b>Service:</b> Participate in departmental, university, and professional society committees. Collaborate with clinical departments to foster translational AI initiatives.</li>
</ul><h4 class="jobSectionHeader"><b>Required Qualifications</b></h4>
<ul><li>Ph.D. in Physiology, or Neuroscience, or Gastrointestinal/Endocrinology, or Reproduction, or Respiratory Physiology or Computational Biology, Data Science, or a closely related discipline.</li>
<li>Demonstrated expertise in applying Large Language Models (LLMs), AI, or machine learning to biomedical datasets.</li>
<li>A strong record of research publications in high-impact physiology or computational journals.</li>
<li>Evidence of, or strong potential to obtain, extramural funding.</li>
<li>Excellent written and verbal communication skills.</li>
</ul><h4 class="jobSectionHeader"><b>Preferred Qualification
</b></h4><ul><li>Postdoctoral training in a physiology-related field.</li>
<li>Experience in bridging traditional bench-top physiology with AI/computational modeling.</li>
<li>Prior teaching experience in medical or graduate-level physiology is preferred.</li>

The Pfeifer lab is a collaborative Research group within the School of Dentistry, Department of Biomaterial and Biomedical Sciences. The lab was established in 2011 and has been continuously supported by the NIH-National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, and others. We have a strong track record in the fields of Biomaterials and Polymer Chemistry, with over 150 publications and several full patents. Our focus is to develop materials solutions for use in healthcare applications (including oral) with a heavy emphasis at the interface with microbiology and host tissue interactions. We have been able to be successful in this quest thanks to a multi-disciplinary team of highly collaborative individuals, including materials scientists, clinicians, engineers, chemists and microbiologists. Dr. Carmem Pfeifer seeks an Assistant Staff Scientist with extensive knowledge of microbiology and materials science related methods to drive research projects to academic and translational goals. This person will contribute to scientific direction of numerous projects and share the management responsibilities for lab members working on those projects. Technical expertise in the area molecular biology and molecular design, as well as collaborative research approach are key to success in this role.</div>
Required Qualifications:
<ul><li>PhD in relevant field (Bioengineering, Biology, Biomaterials, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science)</li><li>
Doctoral degree in Biomedical Sciences or related fields and a minimum of 3 years of post-doctoral work experience in a research lab with a focus on material-tissue/biofilm interactions</li><li>
Intimate knowledge of molecular biology and microbiology assays</li><li>
Knowledge of how to operate various instrumentation and basic engineering principles for applications and troubleshooting with instrumentation (including at least a few of the following: Mechanical testing: universal testing machine (flexural strength, fracture toughness, dynamic mechanical analysis, rheology); Spectroscopic techniques (IR and UV-Vis, mass spec, GPC, HPLC); Imaging (SEM and confocal microscopy)</li><li>
Ability to optimize and adapt existing molecular biology protocols for analysis of modified material surfaces</li><li>
Familiarity with spatial analysis approaches such as spatial transcriptomics, especially for engineered tissues or on-chip systems</li><li>
Familiarity with technical writing, including research manuscripts, methods manuscripts, patents, and other IP documentation</li><li>
Ability to lead discussions around research projects and proactively communicate with research team members for the success of the project</li><li>
Ability to prioritize multiple tasks at one time</li><li>
Excellent communication, analytical, and organizational skills: both written and verbal</li><li>
Ability to work independently and as part of a team while being collaborative in resolving problems</li><li>
Intermediate skills with Microsoft Office (Excel, Outlook, Access, Word, and PowerPoint) on Window OS, and other advanced graphing and image design software (Prism, Origin, Photoshop, Adobe illustrator)</li><li>
