Job Summary</b></p>
Performs donor registration, screenings, product shipment, whole blood collection, and automated platelet collections. Responsible for the performance of donor room procedures under the direction of the charge nurse/tech and follows Standard Operating Procedures. Able to balance production, donor care, and quality requirements to meet annual blood collection goals. The Blood Donor Technician adheres to AABB standards, FDA regulations, and guidelines established by other regulatory agencies.<p></p><div><div><div><div><div><div><div><p><b><br>

Essential Functions (Key Roles &amp; Responsibilities)</b></p><ul><li>
Interviews donors to determine eligibility according to the departmental Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and conducts a medical history and physical examination.</li><li>
Follows established criteria for the temporary/permanent deferral of donors to prevent inadvertent collection from an ineligible donor.</li><li>
Performs whole blood collection using established sterile technique in preparation of phlebotomy site and performs platelet pheresis collection using the apheresis system.</li><li>
Performs daily quality control, including daily scale calibration and other equipment used in the selection and collection process. Responsible for the documentation and corrective action as needed.</li><li>
May work on mobile blood drives at locations throughout Massachusetts, and assist in maintaining adequate inventory of necessary supplies for the Donor Center and Off-Site Mobile Blood Drives.</li><li>
Transports blood products to the blood bank, follows all safety and infection control policies, maintains a clean work area, and performs other duties as required.</li><li>
Maintains a professional image at all times and serves as a role model to colleagues.</li><li>

<div><p>The Clinical Laboratory Scientist Generalist is accountable to the Administrative Director of the laboratory or a laboratory supervisor. The CLS-G will work cooperatively in conjunction with the Laboratory Director, Lab Supervisors, Pathologists and fellow employees in order to assure high quality laboratory services for all age groups from infants to geriatric.</p></div>

<div><ul><li>Performs all high complexity procedures in all areas of the clinical laboratory that require the exercise of independent judgement and con assist in the blood bank
</li></ul><ul><li>Completes all work according to policy and procedure
</li></ul><ul><li>Able to operate all laboratory equipment in a safe and efficient manner.
</li></ul><ul><li>Assures that all specimens are properly identified and of acceptable condition for accurate results.
</li></ul><ul><li>Able to handle routine and stat specimens efficiently to meet the required turn around times for each.
</li></ul><ul><li>Able to perform all procedures in the laboratory regardless of difficulty.
</li></ul><ul><li>Assist the Clinical Support Assistants with phlebotomy, specimen accessioning, phone requests and customer inquiries.
</li></ul><ul><li>Maintains appropriate levels of inventory and capable of taking the annual inventory
</li></ul><ul><li>Demonstrates a complete understanding of all policies and procedures.
</li></ul><ul><li>Capable of assessing and correlating new procedures that are to be implemented in the laboratory. Prepares procedure/policy drafts for the new procedure.
</li></ul><ul><li>Capable of assisting with certification inspections (CAP, JCAH, etc).
</li></ul><ul><li>Capable of being trained as an LCDM (laboratory information system analyst).
</li></ul><ul><li>Capable of taking call for the laboratory/blood bank if necessary. Can be called on to act in the absence of the Lab Director or Supervisor.

<div><ul><li>Anticipates, organizes and prioritizes the department/laboratory work, in accordance with policy and procedure, in order to satisfy customer expectations (TAT, accuracy, criticals, fax requests, etc).
</li></ul><ul><li>Capable of reviewing QC data and initiate corrective action with the QC Officer as necessary
</li></ul><ul><li>Capable of supervising the overall training of new CLS and MLT personnel
</li></ul><ul><li>Demonstrates good judgement in handling situations not covered by written instructions
</li></ul><ul><li>Has the organization and foresight to reconcile department logs efficiently, completely and with the frequency required for efficient turn around.
</li></ul><ul><li>Regularly consults with other laboratory personnel or supervisors in areas of uncertainty to assure accuracy and efficiency.
</li></ul><ul><li>Willing and able to convey information/instructions accurately, positively and effectively to other laboratory personnel to assure accurate and timely outcomes
</li></ul><ul><li>Promptly reports to the supervisor/director any dangerous work condition or non-compliance with the department/hospital policy which may endanger the health/lives of the laboratory personnel or, affect the continuance of service to our customers
</li></ul><ul><li>Exercises exemplary professional and independent judgement in evaluating specimen integrity, required specimen types, result accuracy and result validity and, initiates or carries out the corrective action that assures valid and accurate results.
</li></ul><ul><li>Capable of being sent for off site instrument training and assist in preparing this instrument for use in the laboratory/blood bank.
</li></ul><ul><li>Able to make positive critiques and useful suggestions of the work practices that contribute to the productivity, efficiency and accuracy of the laboratories performance.
</li></ul><ul><li>Able to correlate laboratory methods and patient test results with age specific population criteria (i.e. neonates, pediatrics, adults, geriatric).

<br><div><p>Education: Bachelor's degree in science or a degree from a Medical Technology Program
</p><p>License and Certification: LSBME Licensed as Clinical Lab Scientists, CLS-G or CLS-S</p></div>
