One position is available at the Wally Noerenberg Hatchery on Esther Island in Prince William Sound, Alaska. The facility is only accessible by boat or float plane; no road access. Direct boat access from Whittier takes about 45 minutes. This hatchery has an expected boat service once a week.

Basic Function: The Maintenance Manager functions as part of the hatchery operations team in the cultivating and rearing of fish. Primary Responsibilities: The Maintenance Manager works closely with the Hatchery Manager to plan, manage, and implement facility maintenance, repair, and improvement programs as well as supervising maintenance and repair projects. Administrative responsibilities include assisting the manager in the planning, budgeting, documenting, assessing, and improving hatchery operations. 


Description of duties and tasks:

Serving members, attenders, tenants, and event renters, the Property Manager ensures that the campus is safe, compliant, well-maintained, and welcoming. This role oversees a wide range of building systems, coordinates contractors and volunteers, manages compliance with legal and safety mandates, and works closely with the FMW Property Committee. The work is on-site across FMW&rsquo;s multi-building campus, with both indoor and outdoor responsibilities and some availability for urgent property issues.The position reports to the Clerk(s) of the Property Committee (or designee) and acts on behalf of the committee in matters related to the physical property. The position works closely with FMW&rsquo;s Administrative Secretary, the Event and Rentals Manager, and the Horticulturist and Landscape Manager.Key ResponsibilitiesFacilities &amp; Building Systems● Oversee the condition, maintenance, and repair of historic and modern buildings and campus infrastructure.● Monitor and maintain building structure, exterior envelope (roofs, masonry, windows, doors), and interior spaces.● Manage HVAC systems, plumbing, electrical systems (including solar power), elevators, fireplaces, and fire suppression systems.● Ensure functionality and safety of doors, hardware, lighting, fixtures, and equipment.Safety, Security &amp; Compliance● Maintain campus safety systems including fire alarms, sprinklers, extinguishers, elevator inspections, and emergency access.● Manage locks, keys, and physical access controls in coordination with staff.● Manage snow and ice removal, stairs, ramps, railings, sidewalks, and other liability-related conditions.● Ensure compliance with required inspections, permits, and property-related legal mandates.Contractor, Vendor &amp; Volunteer Management● Hire, supervise, and coordinate licensed contractors, and specialty vendors.● Recruit and manage volunteers and independent handypersons while maintaining quality control.Records, Budget &amp; Administration● Maintain building plans, system documentation, and historical property records.● Track maintenance expenses, contracts, and capital needs in coordination with the Bookkeeper and Property Committee.● Balance competing needs, budgets, timelines, and stakeholder priorities.● Approve invoices and bills for property related expenses within established budget and approval parameters and submit them to bookkeeper for payment.Qualifications &amp; SkillsThe ideal candidate brings broad experience in facilities maintenance and property management across diverse building systems. Relevant qualifications include:● Broad knowledge of building systems, facilities maintenance, and property management.● Experience coordinating contractors, vendors, and volunteers.● Ability to work with historic structures and diverse building technologies.● Strong organizational skills and attention to safety, compliance, and risk management.● Ability to communicate clearly and work collaboratively with committees, staff, and community members.● Comfort balancing practical constraints such as cost, disruption, and scheduling.● Physical capability for hands-on facilities work, indoors and outdoors, across seasons● Flexibility, patience, and creative problem-solvingNice to Have● Familiarity with historic preservation principles and sensitivity to working within designated or historically significant buildings● Spanish language ability● Familiarity with Quaker values and practices. Membership in the Religious Society of Friends, attendance at Quaker meeting for worship, or other involvement with the FMW community are absolutely not required.CompensationThe Property Manager is a non-exempt part-time position compensated at an hourly rate of $40-45, depending on experience and qualifications. Hours average 20&ndash;25 per week, with some variation based on need.Positions of at least half-time are eligible for benefits, which include health, vision and dental insurance, retirement savings benefits, and paid leave.
