<div><div>The purpose of the Campus Police Department is to provide service and protection to The Rhode Island College campus, properties, staff, faculty, visitors, and students. Working with Student Services, Residential Life, Physical Plant and others in our on-campus community, we are an integrated team striving to achieve excellence in police protection and to ensure a high quality of student-faculty life by promoting a tranquil, safe atmosphere conducive to the objectives of the College. <ul><li>At Rhode Island College (RIC), to independently perform a full range of tasks involved in the protection, safety and security of individuals and property at Rhode Island College (RIC); to patrol the campus on foot, bicycle and/or in marked police cruisers; to inspect campus buildings and grounds; to guard against fire, theft, damage, defacement and/or destruction; to maintain order and security on institution premises; to identify and apprehend criminal offenders as permitted within the law and participate in subsequent Court proceedings; to provide emergency medical services to the campus community, including to provide aid to individuals who are injured or in danger of physical harm as well as to render first aid; to perform all required duties in accordance with applicable State and Federal laws and ordinances as well as College and Department rules, regulations, policies and orders; and to do related work as required.</li>

<li>To courteously explain any instance where the Department does not have jurisdiction, and to make suggestions as to other procedures that the member of the campus community can follow to rectify the problem(s).</li>

Conducts audits of criminal cases and is responsible for case management; performs transfer officer duties for criminal cases to offices of various prosecutors. Develops sources of information; locates and interviews complainants and witnesses; visits locations frequented by criminals to determine criminal habits, associates, characteristics, aliases and other relevant information; makes analysis of crime trends and patterns; possesses forensic and technical surveillance equipment expertise. Conducts crime scene searches, at which time he/she appropriately searches for, seizes and preserves evidence which is needed for the investigation of the crime and the apprehension and conviction of the offender; acts as custodian and technician of evidence.<br>

Gives credible testimony in the criminal and civil courts of this state and The United States. Effectively testifies in grand juries, county, district and federal courts. Participates in public relations and crime prevention enhancement activities by attending civic club meetings, churches, schools and other places of public or university gathering and explaining the activities and functions of the police department and crime prevention methods. May conduct research on key topical areas and develop targeted presentations for departmental personnel. Trains and mentors investigators by providing training and instruction in the methods and techniques of criminal investigations; prepares administrative documentation necessary to the work function; provides training for departmental personnel and conducts crime prevention programs on campus; determines investigators' training needs. Complies with all state and university policies. <br>Attempts to locate missing persons.
<br>Enforces traffic law by detecting violations, makes violator custody or issues citations or warnings. Investigates motor vehicle collisions.
<br>Prepares various written reports narrating law enforcement and police activities.
<br>Gives testimony in the criminal courts of this state and the United States.
<br>Confers with prosecuting attorneys, preserves evidence and maintains confidential information.
<br>Confers with local law enforcement, criminal justice and emergency response agencies on matters of mutual interest.
<br>Performs other duties as assigned.
