The Cardiology Intensive Care Unit (CICU)/Progressive Care Unit (PCU) is a 24-bed unit in the HUP Pavilion. All staff members in our unit are trained to care competently for both CICU and PCU patients. Once orientation is complete, they will split their time between caring for both levels of care.</p><p></p><p>
We manage a wide range of complex cardiac conditions, including cardiogenic shock, life-threatening cardiac arrhythmias, acute myocardial infarction, advanced heart failure, adult congenital heart disease, postpartum cardiomyopathy, pulmonary hypertension, and acute coronary syndrome. Our unit is equipped to handle critically ill patients requiring advanced hemodynamic monitoring and interventions, including central venous, arterial, and pulmonary artery catheters, mechanical ventilation, intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP) therapy, continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT), targeted temperature management (TTM), and ventricular assist devices (VADs and Impellas).</p><p></p><p>
Primarily a medical cardiology unit, we care for patients before durable VAD implantation, before organ transplant, and during any recurrent admissions, separate from the postoperative care area for invasive cardiothoracic/vascular surgery. Additionally, we provide care for patients undergoing pre- and post-cardiac catheterization, electrophysiology studies, and other minimally invasive cardiac procedures.</p><p>

POSITION SUMMARY<br>
This position assesses, plans, implements, evaluates and documents nursing care of patients in accordance with organizational policies and in accordance with standards of professional nursing practice utilizing the framework for professional nursing practice and development. This position is accountable for the quality of nursing services delivered by self or others who are under their direction. This position utilizes specialized knowledge, judgment, and nursing skills necessary to assess data and plan, provide and evaluate care appropriate to the physical and developmental age of assigned patients.<br>

The role requires the ability to prioritize care, respond effectively to emergencies, collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, and deliver high-quality, patient-centered care in a fast-paced environment.</p><p><b>Key Responsibilities</b></p><p><b>Clinical Care</b></p><ul><li>Perform rapid patient assessments and triage according to established emergency department protocols.</li><li>Identify actual and potential health problems and prioritize care based on patient acuity.</li><li>Initiate emergency nursing interventions and provide immediate care for critically ill or injured patients.</li><li>Monitor, assess, and document patients' clinical conditions and responses to treatment.</li><li>Administer medications, intravenous therapies, blood products, and treatments as prescribed.</li><li>Assist physicians and other healthcare professionals during examinations, procedures, and resuscitation efforts.</li><li>Operate and monitor emergency equipment, including cardiac monitors, defibrillators, ventilators, and infusion devices.</li><li>Respond promptly to medical emergencies, trauma cases, cardiac arrests, and disaster situations.</li></ul><p><b>Patient and Family Care</b></p><ul><li>Provide compassionate care and emotional support to patients and families during emergency situations.</li><li>Educate patients and families regarding treatment plans, discharge instructions, medications, and follow-up care.</li><li>Advocate for patient safety, dignity, and rights throughout the care process.</li><li>Facilitate effective communication between patients, families, and the healthcare team.</li></ul><p><b>Care Coordination</b></p><ul><li>Collaborate with physicians, paramedics, respiratory therapists, laboratory personnel, radiology staff, and other healthcare professionals.</li><li>Coordinate admissions, transfers, referrals, and discharges as appropriate.</li><li>Ensure continuity of care through effective handovers and documentation.</li></ul><p><b>Quality and Patient Safety</b></p><ul><li>Adhere to infection prevention and control standards.</li><li>Ensure compliance with emergency department policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.</li><li>Participate in quality improvement, risk management, and patient safety initiatives.</li><li>Report and document incidents, adverse events, and safety concerns according to organizational policy.</li><li>Support disaster preparedness and emergency response planning activities.</li></ul><p><b>Documentation</b></p><ul><li>Maintain accurate, timely, and complete patient records in the electronic medical record system.</li><li>Document assessments, interventions, treatments, medications, and patient outcomes in accordance with professional standards.</li></ul><p><b>Professional Practice</b></p><ul><li>Maintain clinical competency in emergency nursing practices and procedures.</li><li>Participate in continuing education, mandatory training, and professional development activities.</li><li>Serve as a resource and mentor to junior nursing staff when appropriate.</li><li>Participate in departmental meetings, audits, accreditation activities, and performance improvement initiatives.</li></ul><p><b>Qualifications</b></p><ul><li>Bachelor's Degree in Nursing or equivalent recognized nursing qualification.</li><li>Current Registered Nurse license in accordance with local regulatory requirements.</li></ul><p><b>Certifications</b></p><ul><li>Basic Life Support (BLS) &ndash; Required.</li><li>Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) &ndash; Required.</li><li>Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) &ndash; Preferred/Required based on department scope.</li><li>Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) or equivalent trauma certification &ndash; Preferred.</li></ul><p><b>Experience</b></p><ul><li>Minimum 4 years of clinical nursing experience.</li><li>Previous experience in Emergency Department, Critical Care, Intensive Care Unit (ICU), Trauma, or Acute Care settings preferred.</li></ul><p><b>Skills and Competencies</b></p><ul><li>Strong emergency assessment and triage skills.</li><li>Ability to perform effectively under pressure and in rapidly changing situations.</li><li>Excellent critical thinking and clinical decision-making abilities.</li><li>Strong communication and interpersonal skills.</li><li>Ability to prioritize workload and manage multiple patients simultaneously.</li><li>Proficiency in emergency equipment and clinical technologies.</li><li>Commitment to patient safety, quality care, and professional practice.</li></ul><p>Education:</p><ul><li>Bachelor's (Preferred)</li></ul><p>Experience:</p><ul><li>Emergency Nurse : 4 years (Required)</li></ul><p>Work Location: In person</p>
