SUMMARY: 
Performs tests related to the diagnosis and treatment of patient by utilizing various medical laboratory procedures in the Clinical Laboratory. Correlates and integrates other patient data when interpreting test results. Uses professional judgment and has an in-depth knowledge of laboratory techniques, scientific principles, quality control, and instrument maintenance. Recognizes problems, identifies causes, and determines alternative methods and solutions.
 
SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: 
<ul>
<li>Bachelor's Degree Required.</li>
<li>Medical Technologist (MT), Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS), Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) or equivalent certification by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) required or registry eligible and obtained within 1 year of hire date.</li>
</ul>
WHAT YOU WILL DO: 
<ul>
<li>Performs, records and reviews scheduled QC. Takes immediate corrective action when QC data is outside established limits.</li>
<li>Verifies specimen labeling, integrity and suitability before performing testing.</li>
<li>Accurately performs low, medium and high complexity testing procedures according to established protocols and regulatory requirements. Reports test results accurately and appropriately. Reports critical test results to physician, nursing station or physician office according to established protocol.</li>
<li>Performs phlebotomy when needed according to laboratory policies and procedures. Monitors supply inventory and takes appropriate action to ensure that needed supplies are readily available.</li>

Summary: 
 
The Medical Laboratory Technician is responsible for the performance of a variety of testing to aid in the diagnosis and treatment of disease under the professional direction of a qualified Medical Technologist or other certified Laboratory Scientist as defined by appropriate regulations(s). He/she must have an understanding of the technical aspect of all diagnostic procedures being performed, including the steps to take for unacceptable test/quality control performance and results. The MLT has direct patient contact if performing phlebotomy, pediatric sweat chloride testing, bone marrow assistance and/or therapeutic phlebotomy procedures. The scope of care may include the testing performed on neonate, child, adolescent, adult, and/or geriatric patients. 
 
The MLT supports the Laboratory&rsquo;s Performance Improvement Programs to ensure services exceed quality and customer service standards. Completion of a clinical laboratory training program approved by the Health Education and Welfare Academic and Sciences Program prior to 1980 or the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) as of 1980; or 
Meet the CLIA Standard; Testing personnel qualification 42CFR493.1423 for moderate complexity testing and 42CFR493.1489 for high complexity testing. 
Certification by the ASCP, AMT, or other organization deemed comparable is not required but preferred.
 
High School Diploma or equivalent.
