Summary:
3 South is a 30-bed unit specializing in cardiovascular disorders and thoracic surgery. 3 South cares primarily for patients frequently requiring ambulatory telemetry monitoring, in a Progressive Care Unit environment. Cardiovascular disorders cared for on 3 South include: MI-following the acute stay in the HVICU, Heart Failure; Pulmonary Edema; Arrhythmias; Post-interventional Radiology patients; Post-procedure Angioplasty; Valvular Heart Disease. The staff cares for Thoracic Surgery patients undergoing various thoracic surgical procedures such as lobectomy, esophagectomy, sleeve resection/chest wall resection, VATS, lung volume reduction surgery and endobronchial valves. In addition, the staff cares for Pulmonary Hypertension (PH) and Heart Failure (HF) patients, utilizing hemodynamic monitoring tools to diagnose and treat the most severe forms of both diseases including patients with Left Ventricular Assist Devices.
Summary of Accountabilities:
The Clinical Nurse 1 New to Practice/Apprentice is a newly licensed new-to-practice RN or RN with less than 15 months of experience that demonstrates basic safe practice within the organizational professional practice model. The Clinical Nurse 1 New to Practice/Apprentice seeks guidance to integrate concepts, knowledge, skills and attitudes to meet standards for competent professional nursing practice as specified in the Clinical Nurse I New to Practice/Apprentice position description addendum. The Clinical Nurse 1 New to Practice/Apprentice exhibits UPHS organizational behavioral competencies which reflect its mission and are embedded in the professional practice competency domains.
The Clinical Nurse 1 New to Practice/Apprentice is accountable for the provision of direct care to patients who may range in age from infancy to the elderly and demonstrates within the competency domains of Continuous Quality Improvement, Evidence Based Practice and Research, Leadership, Person and Family Centered Care, Professionalism, Safety, Teamwork, and Technology/ Informatics.

4RCP is a 47-bed unit providing care for adult medical cardiology, cardiac and thoracic surgery patients requiring telemetry monitoring, temporary cardiac pacing, vasoactive and anticoagulant medication infusions. The unit provides care to postoperative patients including esophagectomies, Nissen fundoplications, thoracotomies, heart transplantation, coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG), valve replacements and transcatheter aortic valve replacements (TAVR). 4RCP also provides care to patients with cardiomyopathy, pulmonary hypertension, chest pain, post percutaneous coronary interventions, as well as arrhythmia management. The unit provides care to postoperative patients including esophagectomies, Nissen fundoplications, thoracotomies, heart transplantation, coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG), valve replacements and transcatheter aortic valve replacements (TAVR). 4RCP also provides care to patients with cardiomyopathy, pulmonary hypertension, chest pain, post percutaneous coronary interventions, as well as arrhythmia management. In addition, the unit is certified to provide care to patients with left ventricular-assist-devices (LVAD). Through a multidisciplinary teamwork approach, 4RCP was awarded with a Gold Beacon Award for Excellence by the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN); this is the only Gold Beacon Award in the state of Iowa. Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:<ul><li>
Independently obtain and record vital signs including temperature, pulse, respiration, and blood pressure</li><li>
Carry out medical asepsis when performing skills and tasks including but not limited to phlebotomy, peripheral IV removal, &amp; Foley catheter removal and cares for patients who are medically isolated</li><li>
Perform simple diagnostic and therapeutic procedures such as enemas, preoperative preparation of the skin, dressing changes, collecting specimens, applying binders, braces, etc</li><li>
Perform special duties as taught and directed by the nurse in charge including but not limited to phlebotomy, ECG lead/12 lead placement, and brace/pin site cares</li><li>
Assist with patient admission, transfers, and discharges</li><li>
Directly provide for patients' personal hygiene and comfort</li><li>
Turn, positions and ambulates patients</li><li>
Transport patients, equipment, specimens, and supplies</li><li>
Feed patients, serve drinking water and nourishments, and record patients' intake</li><li>
 Assist patients with bedpans and urinals and record output</li><li>
Participate in nursing care conferences; report pertinent patient information and incidents to nurse in charge</li><li>
Provide for patient comfort measures through social interactions</li><li>
Share responsibility for preparation, proper use and care of equipment and supplies, and for neatness and cleanliness of unit</li><li>
May assemble and maintain equipment and supplies in preparation for various diagnostic or treatment procedures performed by physicians or nurse</li><li>
Clean areas per designated guidelines and standards demonstrating proper use of approved disinfectants, cleaning products, and care of the housekeeping equipment</li><li>
Stock and supply patient rooms and nursing units</li></ul>
Percent of Time: 50% - 20 hours per week 
Schedule: Day and Night shifts, every third weekend rotation, every other holiday rotation
