The Mount Pleasant Correctional Facility has a long history of helping people since 1861. Both staff and incarcerated individuals have opportunities to give back to the local surrounding communities through collaborative programs. MPCF is a minimum custody, male facility, that houses approximately 1150 incarcerated individuals. We are focused on re-entry efforts by providing treatment, work, education and apprenticeship opportunities to help with the success of our individuals returning to our communities.<br>

<b><i>Typical Responsibilities of a Correctional Officer:</i></b><br>
Our officers are responsible for providing security and care to incarcerated individuals, ensuring incarcerated individual and staff safety, enforcing rules and regulations, maintaining order, escorting individuals, and supervising other activities and programs as required.<br>
Patrols facilities and makes security checks; inspects all areas of the institution (control center, cell areas, rooms, halls, dormitories, recreation/work areas and grounds) for safety/security deficiencies; searches individuals, vehicles, packages, mail, equipment, clothing and living areas for contraband items.<br>
Verifies incarcerated individual population in an assigned area at regular/irregular intervals and participates in incarcerated individuals counts.<br>
Observes incarcerated individuals behavior/interaction with staff, other incarcerated individuals, and visitors.<br>
Continuously interacts with incarcerated individuals, assisting in the development of problem solving skills, providing positive reinforcement when appropriate, and instituting corrective measures (informal counseling or sanctions, formal disciplinary action, or physical force) when necessary and as authorized by law/policy.<br>
Instructs incarcerated individuals in policy, procedure, expectations, and assists incarcerated individuals in the development of attitudes and skills necessary for successful adaptation to life within an institution.<br>
Supervises incarcerated individuals work assignments and evaluates work performance.<br>
All work is performed under general supervision of a superior.<br>

</b></h2><p>This is full performance corrections work enforcing designated laws, rules, and regulations in a corrections facility and providing functional supervision to lower level Corrections Officers. Incumbent in this class is responsible for controlling inmates living, work or recreational areas on a specific post in corrections institution and providing functional supervision to lower level Corrections Officers assigned to the post. Incumbent may serve as a member of a unit team providing input into the rehabilitation of members within the unit. Incumbent in this class is certified Corrections Officer and exercise delegated statutory powers.</p><p>
The position requires strong problem solving skills; good oral and written communication skills; effective conflict management skills; ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships and effective customer service skills; ability to adapt to new situations and/or changes. The incumbent must be capable of performing established Essential Physical Functions. This Correctional Officer Lieutenant position is located at Union Correctional Institution. The incumbent in this position is considered to have regulatory responsibilities and is subject to the provisions of Chapter 60L-36, Florida Administrative Code. The Officer assigned to this position has responsibility for supervising Correctional Officers and Correctional Officer Sergeants assigned to any security post on any of the established shifts. This position serves as the initial commander during emergency situations. Functions as facility manager during non-administrative hours.</p>
<p>
Duties include but are not limited to the following:</p>
<p>
Plans, organizes and coordinates the activities of all Correctional Officers and Correctional Officer Sergeants assigned to a shift. Delegates post assignments, specific duty assignments, coordinates leave use and ensures accurate completion of attendance and leave reports. Works with employees to ensure proper security coverage. Conducts periodic individual counseling with staff to outline problem areas and to give additional duties or instructions. May take or recommend non-appealable disciplinary action or recommend appealable disciplinary action to higher level management.</p>
<p>
Supervises searches for contraband and makes daily inspections of buildings and grounds. Inspects physical plant for security concerns and to maintain proper sanitation standards. Circulates throughout institution observing officers&rsquo; performance. Conducts performance evaluations. Schedules and/or coordinates training programs for subordinates. Conducts continuous training of subordinate staff in security procedures.</p>
<p>
Supervises and coordinates body cavity searches as authorized by the Warden, Assistant Warden or Chief Correctional Officer. Authorizes non-emergency applications of use of force per DC Rule 33-3.0065(3).</p>
<p>
Supervises inmates at the level of risk they present. Manages inmate housing areas, enforces rules and sanitation standards. Transports inmates using approved restraints and observing relevant laws, policies and procedures. Conducts accurate head counts, maintains custody and control over inmates at appointments outside the secured perimeter and escorts inmates within the secured perimeter.</p>
<p>
Performs crisis intervention functions to include, but not limited to restraining violent or uncooperative inmates, defending persons against attack, and preventing escapes, using approved deadly or non-deadly force, restraints or other approved methods. Provides emergency assistance during emergencies, disasters and accidents to include, but not limited to, CPR, first aid, implementation of evacuation procedures, security of inmates and/or areas in accordance with the emergency situation.</p>
<p>
Conducts inspections and visual and audio surveillance of persons, property, vehicles, building and outdoor areas. Physically checks doors, windows, gates, barred sections, fences and other areas to ensure proper security.</p>
<p>
Attends mandatory and other training.</p>
<p>
Performs other related duties as required.</p>
