Responsibilities - What you&rsquo;ll do
Supervises Correctional Officers; develops expectations/monitors performance and work habits. Assists the Corrections Training Officer in conducting orientation and in-service training programs. Observes personnel to ensure compliance with established rules, regulations, and procedures. Conducts on-the-job training for Correctional Officers.
Serves as officer-in-charge of special security posts where independent judgment and responsibility are required. Patrols living quarters, grounds, and buildings to observe offender behaviors and the effectiveness of Correctional Officers. Prepares and submits reports on offender violations of divisional or correctional facility rules, unusual offender behaviors, observed mechanical deficiencies, and security breaches or failures.
Discuss minor adjustment problems with offenders; refers serious problems to proper correctional facility staff; and promotes rehabilitation by attempting to modify offender&rsquo;s social attitudes, discouraging undesirable behaviors, and encouraging worthwhile activities. Inspects buildings and equipment for security, safety, and sanitary conditions.
Supervises movement of offenders inside and outside the correctional facility; conducts periodic counts of offenders; and searches offenders and their living quarters for contraband. Arbitrates disputes and settles grievances among offenders, enforcing disciplinary measures when necessary; refers difficult disciplinary problems to an administrative supervisor.
Performs work in accordance with established rules/regulations; receives general administrative direction and performs other related work as assigned.
A physical examination by a physician may be required before or at the time of appointment to determine if the applicant meets the physical standards for employment established by the Missouri Department of Corrections
By assignment, a position may require possession of a valid vehicle operator&rsquo;s license
Qualifications - All you need for success
Minimum Qualifications:
Six or more months of experience as a Correctional Officer or Probation and Parole Assistant with the Missouri Department of Corrections; OR
One or more years of military service, or experience in the custody of adult criminal offenders in a city, county, state, or federal facility.

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

This Correctional Officer Lieutenant position is located at Union Correctional Institution. The incumbent in this position is considered to have regulatory responsibilities and is subject to the provisions of Chapter 60L-36, Florida Administrative Code. The Officer assigned to this position has responsibility for supervising Correctional Officers and Correctional Officer Sergeants assigned to any security post on any of the established shifts. This position serves as the initial commander during emergency situations. Functions as facility manager during non-administrative hours.

Duties include but are not limited to the following:

Plans, organizes and coordinates the activities of all Correctional Officers and Correctional Officer Sergeants assigned to a shift. Delegates post assignments, specific duty assignments, coordinates leave use and ensures accurate completion of attendance and leave reports. Works with employees to ensure proper security coverage. Conducts periodic individual counseling with staff to outline problem areas and to give additional duties or instructions. May take or recommend non-appealable disciplinary action or recommend appealable disciplinary action to higher level management.

Supervises searches for contraband and makes daily inspections of buildings and grounds. Inspects physical plant for security concerns and to maintain proper sanitation standards. Circulates throughout institution observing officers&rsquo; performance. Conducts performance evaluations. Schedules and/or coordinates training programs for subordinates. Conducts continuous training of subordinate staff in security procedures.

Supervises and coordinates body cavity searches as authorized by the Warden, Assistant Warden or Chief Correctional Officer. Authorizes non-emergency applications of use of force per DC Rule 33-3.0065(3).

Supervises inmates at the level of risk they present. Manages inmate housing areas, enforces rules and sanitation standards. Transports inmates using approved restraints and observing relevant laws, policies and procedures. Conducts accurate head counts, maintains custody and control over inmates at appointments outside the secured perimeter and escorts inmates within the secured perimeter.

Performs crisis intervention functions to include, but not limited to restraining violent or uncooperative inmates, defending persons against attack, and preventing escapes, using approved deadly or non-deadly force, restraints or other approved methods. Provides emergency assistance during emergencies, disasters and accidents to include, but not limited to, CPR, first aid, implementation of evacuation procedures, security of inmates and/or areas in accordance with the emergency situation.

Conducts inspections and visual and audio surveillance of persons, property, vehicles, building and outdoor areas. Physically checks doors, windows, gates, barred sections, fences and other areas to ensure proper security.

<div><div><div><div>The position is located at the Department of Corrections (DOC). This position provides direct line of responsibility for the administration and management of all custody and care areas. In addition, the incumbent of this position is responsible for interfacing and/or coordinating with support service areas as those activities pertain to custody, care and security of inmates.
Duties and Responsibilities
Serves as Supervisory Correctional Officer (Major) responsible for managing the DOC subordinate correctional force and the planning, directing and administering of the security program of the facility on assigned shifts. Reviews assignment rosters to ensure 24 hours, seven-day-a-week coverage of all duty posts on any one of three shifts, and equitable assignment rotation in the interest of training and morale. Formulates officers leave, training, shift rotation and sign-off-day schedules in accordance with the security requirements of the facility. Provides direction and deployment of a correctional force, according to shifts and posts, in order to ensure the safety and security of the facility, maintain the discipline and decorum of inmates, and encourage work production and training. May assume charge of emergency or escape procedures and directs such activities until superiors&rsquo; arrival. Serves on the facility's Safety/Security Committee, established to formulate plans and issue regulations for the improvement of safety conditions; the Disciplinary Board, and other committees as directed. Responds to issued cell phones and all page/call is required as needed to return to duty and emergency situations. Must be able to use firearm and obtain and maintain a license to carry the firearm.
Maintains liaison with representatives of other units and service/program areas in order to facilitate coordination in the execution of the facility's daily program. Investigates and resolves grievances which could adversely affect the efficient performance of official duties. Conducts extensive investigations on all shifts to detect and eliminate apparent weaknesses in the facility's physical plant or mode of operation. Inspects correctional duty posts and inmate worksites to ensure that officers remain alert, attentive and maintain adequate custodial safeguards. Inspects inmate housing units, recreational areas, worksites to ensure strict adherence to regulations relating to housekeeping and sanitation. Investigates actual or potential escapes, riots, strikes and demonstrations, eliminate all known causative factors which are in conflict with existing regulations; and prepares complete reports for study by the Deputy Warden and other senior officials. Conducts thorough investigations of all charges levied against inmates, actual or potential escapes, riots, strikes and demonstrations. Physical exertion involving prolonged walking and standing, restraining prisoners during emergencies, and participating in escape investigations is required. Knowledge and skill in the use of a computer to complete work related tasks. Ability to provide leadership and direction in a supervisory capacity and team-based environment; and securing subordinate staff.
Qualification and Education
Specialized Experience: Experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position that is typically related to the work of the position to be filled. To be creditable, at least one (1) year of specialized must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization.
Must be at the Captain level to qualify.

 Summary
 
 
 
 Supervises security/control activities and staff in an assigned area, which provides for maximum facility coordination in detainee supervision and safety, in addition to the preparation of required records and reports.
 
 
 
 Primary Duties And Responsibilities
 
 
 
 <ul>
 <li>
 Assists in the development and implementation of policies, procedures and regulations for custody, security and/or treatment of detainees/inmates.
 </li>
 <li>
 Responds to major unusual occurrences. Facilitates prompt and appropriate assistance to detainees/inmates in the event of injury, illness or emotional trauma.
 </li>
 <li>
 Promotes an atmosphere conducive to personality and character development of detainees/inmates and staff through the encouragement of favorable behavior patterns, arrangement of physical facilities, and influencing relationships among detainees/inmates.
 </li>
 <li>
 Directs the work of other employees. This includes the selection, hiring, evaluating job performance, employee training/development, promoting and any disciplinary action, including termination.
 </li>
 <li>
 Makes assignments, reviews post orders and assures that all procedures including emergency procedures are in place and staff is trained in proper implementation.
 </li>
 <li>
 Reviews disciplinary matters concerning both staff and detainees.
 </li>
 <li>
 Reviews staff effectiveness and conducts frequent physical inspections of the facility to ensure compliance with policies and procedures.
 </li>
 <li>
 Gives primary guidance on situational problems; making referrals for more complex problems.

 Prepares records and reports as assigned by management. Maintains daily logs as required.
 </li>
 <li>
 Responsible for attaining facility goals/objectives and ensuring compliance with all rules, regulations, policies and/or procedures for security operations.

 Directs work, provides training and performs inspections of work performed by detainee/inmate staff. May provide detainee supervision and security in other areas as needed.

 Minimum Requirements

 High school diploma or equivalent certification required.
 </li>
 <li>
 College coursework and advanced training in behavioral sciences, correctional services or related field preferred.
 </li>
 <li>
 Three (3) years of experience working in a correctional setting. Two (2) years of management or supervisory experience.
 </li>
 <li>
 Must be a United States Citizen or Legal Permanent Resident.
 </li>
 <li>
 Must be mature, flexible, intellectually alert, able to command the respect and confidence of detainees/inmates and staff and possess a high tolerance to mental stress.
 </li>

LIEUTENANT

Sedgwick County, KS

Department: Corrections
 Pay: $27.44 per hour
 Work Schedule: Various Hours/Various Days, Including Holidays, Weekends, and some Overtime may be required.

Leads, directs, coaches, and supervises a team of Corrections Officers on an assigned shift in a 24-hour correctional facility within the Department of Corrections.
 
Performance Management
 Supervise staff and assigns shift coverage, priorities and projects for the facility; assign work and evaluate performance.
 Assist in interviewing and hiring of Corrections Officer applicants; lead orientation and training of new staff.
 Review and approve timecards for staff.
 Establish priorities and guides staff in adherence to policies, procedures, and best practices; provide support and clarification for staff who violate policy and procedures.
 Review and evaluate employee performance, ensuring staff are trained and provide feedback in knowledge and adherence to required standards.
 Serve as the subject matter expert on facility policies and procedures and lead by example.
 
Facility Management
 Monitor the care and security of clients and staff and an emphasis on security, behavior change, leadership, and modeling of prosocial attitudes, beliefs, values, and behaviors.
 Admit clients in and out of the facility, verify client court records and status, and assist with the intake screening and orientation of new clients.
 Ensure that staff perform drug/alcohol screens on clients, as needed, to ensure that they follow program requirements
 Schedule and conduct area and room searches to ensure facility is free of contraband.
 Ensure that medication procedures are followed with accurate documentation.
 Review reports and other communications to maintain awareness of activities and ensure accuracy.
 Investigate incidents and determine consequences.
 
Quality Assurance
 Ensure that staff monitor client activities, enforce rules, and expectations, and room cleanliness; Ensure the completion assigned head counts to monitor and account for client whereabouts.
 Oversee the maintenance of facility supply inventories; the monitoring of client personal property when client goes AWOL or a warrant is filed and a client is removed from the program.
 Assign staff duties to conduct checks to ensure clients are at their assigned location; maintain client records identifying room location and bed number, and level client is on in the program, if applicable.
 Appraise and update client behavior information; prepare narrative and non-narrative reports regarding client behavior and status; monitor client activities.
 Prepare and maintain various reports and statistics.
 Conduct facility inspections and quality assurance checks and documents/facilitates corrective actions.
 
Minimum Qualifications: A combination of two years of experience working with juvenile or adult clients in a program or facility environment, with progressive responsibilities. One year of supervisory work experience. Professional references are required to verify the related work experience. Must be at least 21 years of age. Per Sedgwick County Policy, this is a driving level position that requires a valid US driver’s license without restrictions. Pass legal background check, Child and Adult Abuse & Neglect Central Registry checks, KCJIS Security Policy (fingerprint) check, and pre-employment screens. Must also meet the required conditions contained in KSA 65-516 and KAR 28-4-356.
 
Preferred Qualifications: A combination of four (4) years of experience working with juvenile or adult clients in a program or facility environment, with progressive responsibilities. Two (2) years supervisory work experience. Associate’s degree from an accredited college or university in Sociology, Psychology, Criminal Justice, or closely related field. Transcript verifying education credits is required.
