Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
<ul><li>Has functional supervision over and coordinates the work of employees or inmates for a specialized program or detail.
</li><li>Performs custodial security functions.
</li><li>Supervises and monitors activities of DJJ juveniles; assists juveniles in interpersonal skill development.
</li><li>Supervise Correctional Officers. Completes evaluations and approves time and attendance.
</li><li>Maintains shift logs on juvenile's activities and notifies supervisors of issues; completes incident reports as needed; assists juveniles in complaint procedures.
</li><li>Provides support services for routine maintenance, etc.; checks premises and ensures the safety of juveniles; attends staff meetings, case conferences and trainings.
</li><li>Assists in group counseling sessions and assignments.
</li><li>Transports juveniles to off campus outings, appointments, etc.
</li><li>Be able to exert physical effort in the proper restraint of residents based on behavior.
</li><li>May perform other physical efforts in assisting youth with recreational and work related projects.</li></ul>
Additional Information:
<ul><li>This position is deemed essential and has been designated for mandatory operations by the Appointing Authority; therefore, the incumbent is not eligible for Adverse Weather Leave.
</li><li>May be required to work overtime and any shift as needed and directed.
</li><li>Required to successfully complete the Department of Juvenile Justice Training Academy; which entails two weeks on the job training, four weeks (Monday &ndash; Friday) at the academy training location (Louisville, Kentucky). This Correctional Officer Sergeant position is located at Charlotte Correctional Institution. The incumbent in this position is considered to have regulatory responsibilities and is subject to the provisions of Chapter 60L-36, Florida Administrative Code.
</p><p>Duties include but are not limited to the following:
</p><div>Supervises male or female inmates commensurate with the level of risk they present. Manages inmate housing areas, enforces rules and sanitation standards. Transports inmates using approved restraints and observing relevant laws, policies and procedures. Conducts accurate head counts, maintains custody and control over inmates at appointments outside the secured perimeter and escorts inmates within the secured perimeter. Inventories personal property of inmates and issues receipts.</div><br>

</div><div>Performs crisis intervention functions to include, but not limited to, subduing or restraining violent or uncooperative inmates, defending persons against attack, and preventing escapes, using approved deadly or non-deadly force, restraints or other approved methods. Required to wear body armor and use weapons.</div><br>

</div><div>Maintains facility security. This includes performing searches of inmates and other persons. This includes the visual inspection of body cavities and possible exposure to body fluids. Responsible for checking inmate mail and/or packages for contraband. Observes inmate behavior to identify inmates exhibiting mental or emotional disorders. Uses counseling techniques or referral action, as outlined in written policies or guidelines. Conducts inspections and visual and audio surveillance of persons, property, vehicles, building and outdoor areas. Physically checks doors, windows, gates, barred sections, fences and other areas to ensure proper security.</div><br>

</div><div>Provides emergency assistance during emergencies, disasters and accidents to include but not limited to, CPR, first aid, apprehension of escaping or escaped inmates, implementation of evacuation procedures, provides security of inmates and/or areas in accordance with the emergency situation.</div><br>

</div><div>Directs Correctional Officers in supervising inmates in housing units and those segregated for administrative or punitive measures. Directs Correctional Officers in checking inmate mail for possible contraband, and in supervising inmates working on work details both inside and outside the fenced perimeter. Directs Correctional Officers in maintaining master inmate location counts and directs the entire operation of the Control Room or the Main Gate. Ensures that all transportation permits are completed accurately and signed by the appropriate authority. <p></p><div><div><div><ul><li>Under supervision of the Shift Lieutenant, will be responsible for the overall supervision of the security personnel assigned to the unit and supervision and control of the inmates assigned to the unit.</li><li>
Will assist with the preparation of employee evaluations, corrective actions, counseling, etc.</li><li>
Will make unannounced inspections of the unit to ensure that subordinate security staff are performing duties properly.</li><li>
Will be responsible for briefings and training of all security personnel assigned to the unit.</li><li>
Will make routine scheduled and unscheduled inspections of the unit, security devices, and gates for cleanliness, serviceability, and accountability, and ensure that the unit meets all safety and OSHA standards.</li><li>
Will conduct investigations of alleged misconduct.</li><li>
Will mediate to resolve at lowest level.</li><li>
Assists in conducting all counts and makes written reports as needed and/or required.</li></ul>
</div><div><div><b>Must successfully complete eight (8) weeks of SCDC Basic Training upon hire.</b></div><div></div><div><b><br>

<p></p><div><div><p><b>State of South Carolina Minimum Requirements:</b></p><div><p>
A high school diploma and relevant experience. A bachelor&rsquo;s degree in a related field may substitute for the required experience.</p></div><p><b><br>
SCDC Minimum Requirements</b>:</p><br>
<ul><li>
A high school diploma and eighteen (18) months experience in correctional, security, military, or police work.</li><li>
A degree in criminal justice or a related degree may substitute for 1/2 of required experience.</li><li>
Must be certified by the SCDC Training Academy and successfully complete the basic supervisory course within six (6) months of entry into the position.</li></ul></div></div><p></p>
