 What You&rsquo;ll Do
 
 
 
 As a Cadet Program participant, you will engage in a series of interactive learning sessions and practical experiences that introduce you to key areas within corrections.
 
 
 
 Participants Will
 
 
 
 <ul>
 <li>
 Attend regularly scheduled training sessions (approximately 2 times per month) focused on correctional operations and professional development
 </li>
 <li>
 Learn about core correctional practices, including communication, report writing, use of force principles, and safety procedures
 </li>
 <li>
 Participate in hands-on demonstrations and scenario-based learning activities such as defensive tactics, search procedures, and equipment familiarization
 </li>
 <li>
 Gain exposure to specialized units such as Special Investigations Unit (SIU), Security Threat Management (STM), and ODOC Transport units.
 </li>
 <li>
 Develop an understanding of Dynamic Security, Trauma-Informed Care, and evidence-based practices such as the Risk-Need-Responsivity (RNR) model
 </li>
 <li>
 Practice professional communication, teamwork, and decision-making skills in a structured environment
 </li>
 <li>
 Engage with ODOC staff and leadership to learn about career pathways and opportunities within the department

This is a trainee position that involves the completion of the New Mexico Corrections Department (NMCD) Training Academy and field training. The Cadet will attend, participate in, and successfully complete the NMCD Training Academy within 12 months of hire.
 
Employment is subject to passing pre-employment screening that may include background investigation, agility testing, and psychological testing.
 Minimum Qualification
 
High School Diploma or equivalency.
 Employment Requirements
 
This position is designed safety sensitive. Employment is subject to pre-employment and random testing in accordance with all terms and conditions of Federal and State law, rules and regulations in relation to alcohol and/or drug testing. Successful completion of the New Mexico Corrections Academy within one (1) year of hire is required. Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Driver's License. The applicant must be a U.S. citizen, must be at least 18 years old, have at least a high school education or its equivalent, be of good moral character, have not been convicted of a felony in the courts of this or any state or in the federal courts, and successfully pass any physical or aptitude examination the department may require. Employment is subject to passing all aspects of the screening process including background investigations and psychological evaluation. Any offers of employment are conditional pending these results.

Work is performed in an adult prison environment, which includes daily contact with and supervision of inmates. Willingness to work in a correctional facility, may be required to work odd hours, overtime, holidays, and weekends.

 Why does the job exist?
 
This is a trainee position that involves the completion of the New Mexico Corrections Department (NMCD) Training Academy and field training. The Cadet will attend, participate in, and successfully complete the NMCD Training Academy within 12 months of hire.
 
Employment is subject to passing pre-employment screening that may include background investigation, agility testing, and psychological testing.
 Minimum Qualification
 
High School Diploma or equivalency.
 Employment Requirements
 
This position is designed safety sensitive. Employment is subject to pre-employment and random testing in accordance with all terms and conditions of Federal and State law, rules and regulations in relation to alcohol and/or drug testing. Successful completion of the New Mexico Corrections Academy within one (1) year of hire is required. Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Driver's License. The applicant must be a U.S. citizen, must be at least 18 years old, have at least a high school education or its equivalent, be of good moral character, have not been convicted of a felony in the courts of this or any state or in the federal courts, and successfully pass any physical or aptitude examination the department may require. Employment is subject to passing all aspects of the screening process including background investigations and psychological evaluation. Any offers of employment are conditional pending these results.
 Working Conditions
 
Work is performed in an adult prison environment, which includes daily contact with and supervision of inmates. Willingness to work in a correctional facility, may be required to work odd hours, overtime, holidays, and weekends.
