<p>Summary:</p>
<p>The critical care technician (CCT) is a certified and/or licensed technician and is part of the Intensive Care Department patient care team who collaboratively works in a complementary and assistive role with nursing. The CCT performs a variety of RN delegated tasks under the supervision of the Registered Nurse. The CCT assists the nursing staff in providing patient care in accordance with training, competence and skill. The CCT is knowledgeable of and follows all hospital policies and procedures and consistently assists the patient care team with maintaining a clean, well-organized, adequately stocked and safe patient environment. The CCT also performs all unit clerk/clerical duties for the unit.</p>
<p>Responsibilities:</p><br>
<ul><li>Meets expectations of the applicable OneCHRISTUS Competencies: Leader of Self, Leader of Others, or Leader of Leaders.
</li><li>Assists RN with admission, transfer, and discharges of patients as required.
</li><li>Commensurate with training, observes patient&rsquo;s condition, recognizes changes in patient status, and reports findings to the RN.
</li><li>Cleans, procures, and returns equipment and supplies.
</li><li>Under the direction of the RN, completely operates patient monitoring equipment, records, runs rhythm strips under the direction of the RN.
</li><li>Assists with ordering and maintaining stock items.
</li><li>Charts in electronic Health Record as appropriate.
</li><li>Maintains competency to perform special procedures such as: Foley catheter insertion and removal, venipuncture, laboratory specimen collection as ordered, remove saline lock, staple and suture removal, non-sterile dressing changes, peak expiration flow rate, pulse oximetry, Point of Care Testing, and vital sign recordings.
</li><li>Performs patient care duties to include: obtains and documents vital signs, provides patient hygiene; maintains clear and respectful communications with patients, families and the health care team.
</li><li>Demonstrates competence to perform assigned patient care responsibilities in a manner that meets the population-specific and developmental needs of patients served by the department.
</li><li>Appropriately adapts assigned patient assessment, treatment, and/or care methods to accommodate the unique physical, psychosocial, cultural, age specific and other developmental needs of each patient served.
</li><li>Performs clerical duties to include: Accurately processes the transcription of orders for the patient plan of care.
</li><li>Performs timely, accurate notification related to transcription of orders.
</li><li>Makes interdepartmental requests and follows up as required.
</li><li>Assists clinical staff with the admission, transfer, discharges and returning surgical/post-procedure patients.
</li><li>Obtains diagnostic test results from printer/computer/department and immediately provides it to nursing staff.
</li><li>Performs quality assurance on charts (verifies that chart forms are filed and labeled correctly all orders were transcribed correctly, allergies are noted in appropriate places, forms are processed, etc.)
</li><li>Respond timely to staff, patient, and visitor requests.

</li><li>Takes personal responsibility to ensure compliance with all policies, procedures and standards as promulgated by state and federal agencies, the hospital, and other regulatory entities.

The Patient Care Technician</p><ul><li>
Performs various activities in the treatment and care of patients, including routine hygiene care., ingestion of food and fluids, elimination of body wastes, mobilization, and dressing/undressing.</li><li>
Performs and records routine technical tasks as authorized, such as collecting routine specimens, taking vital signs, collecting and recording intake and output and blood glucose, giving suppositories, performing intermittent catheterization, measuring bladder volume, hanging gastric feedings, and escorting patients.</li><li>
Collects and reports pertinent physiological, psychological, and functional data based on patient plan of care or patient need.</li><li>
Orients the patient and family to the environment, therapeutic activities, and potential safety hazards and prevention strategies as identified by the registered nurse.</li><li>
Incorporates factors related to safety into delivery of patient care as directed by the registered nurse.</li><li>
Implements interventions consistent with the plan of care as directed by a registered nurse.</li><li>

Overview:

Kelemen North and South 9 is a two-sided, seventy-six bed Medical-Surgical Telemetry unit. Our staff care for a variety of patient populations, including cardiac, trauma, gastrointestinal, and psych.</p><p></p><p><br>
To support our staff are Clinical Nurse Managers (CNMs) which help with patient care, through put, and assignments. Nurses who are staffed on Kelemen 9 are required to have Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), and Basic Life Support (BLS) certifications, which will allow competent and safe care for our complex patient populations.</p>

Assures equipment malfunctions are reported to the appropriate department. Contributes to the universal unit activities including, but not limited to, responding to call lights and telephones, passing meal trays, and transporting patients.</li><li>
Identifies and communicates learning needs to the unit director or direct leader. Request's assistance in planning and prioritizing activities as needed.</li><li>
Demonstrate understanding of cultural diversity, horizontal violence, and impairment in the health professions. Cares for patients and self by supporting safety in the workplace.</li><li>
Provides instruction to patients and their families under the direction of the RN. May apply, monitor, and remove patient restraints as per physician or hospital protocol.</li><li>
Documents in the medical record according to established procedures. Access to medications is limited to the distribution of the medication to the nurse.</li><li>
In addition to the required standard competencies, the Patient Care Technician will achieve and maintain competency and/or perform at least 1 or more of the following advanced skills based on department operational need: phlebotomy/venipuncture, peripheral IV removal, indwelling Foley catheter removal, basic arrythmia, 12-lead EKG, and NG tubes clamping and removal.</li></ul></div><div><p>
High school diploma or GED. Must also have either a) 1 Year of general healthcare experience, OR b) 6 months of experience as UPMC Nursing Assistant/CNA with PCT competency achieved within 120 days of hire/transfer/promotion for those with less than 1 year of experience, OR c) enrollment in PT/OT/PA program or related healthcare training program with completion of at least one clinical rotation, OR d) completion of a bachelor's degree in a health sciences field. ? Successful completion of UPMC patient care technician class? Successful completion of eRecord training. Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)or Paramedic or currently enrolled in an EMT or Paramedic program preferred.
