 Summary Of Duties
 
 
 
 The Dental Assistant must perform all duties in accordance with standards and methods generally accepted within the field of dental assistant services, and in compliance with all Federal and State policy and regulations. The Dental Assistant will assist the dentist during dental procedures, assist in maintaining accountability and sterilization of instruments, become proficient in Bureau Electronic Medical Records System [BEMR] (the inmate electronic medical record), conduct him/herself in a professional manner around inmates, and perform any other tasks deemed necessary by the dentist while adhering to the general practice of a dental assistant.
 
 
 
 Qualifications

 Must process a High School Certificate of Graduation or GED.
 </li>

 Must have specialty training from a licensed dentist and/or certification from an accredited Dental Assistant school.
 </li>
 <li>
 Training must include dental radiology and radiology safety.
 </li>
 <li>
 Must hold current CPR certification from the American Red Cross or the American Heart Association.
 </li>
 <li>
 Must have a minimum of two (2) years of experience providing Dental Assistant services.
 </li>
 <li>
 Bilingual oral communication skills and experience in a clinical correctional setting are desirable.

 Retrieves patient records, escorts patients to the appropriate dental area, seats and prepares them for treatment, and provides dismissal and follow-up instructions.

 <li>
 Prepares dental instruments, materials, medications, treatment rooms, and equipment for procedures; passes instruments, retracts tissues, irrigates, and operates the aspirator.
 </li>
 <li>
 Assists the Dental Officer by preparing dental instruments, essential materials, drugs, and medications.
 </li>
 <li>
 Passes instruments, retracts tissues, irrigates oral cavities, and operates an aspirator.
 </li>
 <li>
 Observes patient's responses and assists patient for dismissal from the Dental Clinic.
 </li>

 Give instructions for subsequent dental appointments.

 Makes necessary entries on dental treatment records (both electronic and paper records).

Under limited supervision, performs technical work within the dental clinic and laboratory; assist and tutor students in carrying out clinical and laboratory experiences and assignments; oversees daily activities of the clinic and laboratory; manages lab, equipment, and supply/inventory control; manages patient privacy and safety protocols for the Dental Assisting and Hygiene programs.
