The position will be based in Salem or Portland. The Chief Counsel serves at the pleasure of the Attorney General, reporting directly to the Deputy Attorney General. The programs and functions administered and performed within the <div>Criminal Justice Division</div> provide support and line services, as well as act as a statewide multipurpose catalyst to Oregon law enforcement efforts. The Division comprises three parts: Prosecutorial, Investigative, and Intelligence. The Division has three sections: The Special Investigations and Prosecutions section, the Organized Crime section, and the Analytical &amp; Criminal Investigative Services section (ACISS). The Division employs approximately 22 attorneys and 89 total staff.</div><div><br>
The Chief Counsel reports to the Deputy Attorney General and is a member of the DOJ Executive Staff. The Chief Counsel is responsible for the day-to-day operations and long-range planning and management of the Criminal Justice Division. For example, the Chief Counsel must:</div><ul><li><div>
Work to advance the Attorney General&rsquo;s strategic priorities;</div></li><li><div>
Build strong partnerships with local law enforcement, district attorneys, and public safety partners in our work to protect children and keep communities safe;</div></li><li><div>
Develop strong professional relationships with the Governor&rsquo;s Office and leadership throughout state government;</div></li><li><div>
Advise the Attorney General and the Deputy Attorney General on issues related to criminal justice and public safety;</div></li><li><div>
Work with the other legal divisions to build effective communication and coordination on the development of the state's legal positions;</div></li><li><div>

The Board of Indigents&rsquo; Defense Services (BIDS), through its regional public defender offices like the 29th Judicial District Public Defender Office, represents adults charged with felonies who cannot hire an attorney. By supporting and elevating public defense in the State of Kansas, BIDS empowers its team to provide relentless representation and collaborative, holistic advocacy in service of client-centered outcomes.</p><p>
The Kansas State Board of Indigents&rsquo; Defense Services is in the process of remaking its public defense model with a renewed emphasis on building public defense offices with an interdisciplinary team-based collaborative defense system that uses community connections and resources to better represent not just an individual&rsquo;s case, but the client as a whole.</p><p>
We are looking for dynamic, client-centered advocates who are passionate about the importance of public defense and are interested in aiding our efforts to fundamentally rebuild our system and transform the new public defender office in the 29th Judicial District into a model of collaborative public defense practice.</p><p><b>
Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:</b></p><p>
Deputy Public Defenders assist with the evaluation of employee performance within their office and perform administrative tasks as assigned by their Chief Public Defender. Deputy Public Defenders assign work to the attorneys and staff, assist in personnel matters, schedule and lead office and project meetings as needed, and conduct trainings when called upon to do so. Deputy Public Defenders assist the Chief Public Defender in addressing office matters and larger criminal justice issues in their jurisdiction.</p><p>
Deputy Public Defenders represent adults charged with criminal felonies in their local district court jurisdiction who are deemed indigent and unable to afford to hire an attorney. They also carry a slightly reduced caseload to allow for their duties providing active supervision of the other attorneys and support staff in the office, as directed by the Chief Public Defender.</p><p>
Deputy Defenders are readily and regularly accessible to the employees in the office. Deputy Defenders help to develop a positive office culture and support and implement the directives of the Chief Public Defender and the Executive Director. Deputy Defenders may help the Chief Public Defender write objective and comprehensive employee evaluations, recognize and answer ethical questions, and make client-conflict determinations, among other office management duties. Deputy Public Defenders may also serve as a liaison between the District Court, the County or District Attorney Office, community legal or justice-oriented associations or committees, and the Public Defender Office.</p><p></p><p><b>

Render advice on disciplinary cases to the District Ethics Committee.</p><p>&bull;Develop and present CLE programs to the Bar and members of the District Ethics Committees.</p><p>Regular and predictable physical presence at the worksite is an essential function of this position.</p><p><b>Qualifications:</b></p><p>Graduation from an American Bar Association-approved law school and three years of experience as an Attorney-at-Law performing legal research and analyzing and evaluating legal documents, rules, regulations, and/or legislation.</p><p><b>Substitution:</b>One year of experience as a Judicial Law Clerk may be substituted for one year of the required experience.</p><p><b>License:</b>Attorney-at-Law with a plenary license in the State of New Jersey and having Supreme Court Good Standing Status of Active.</p><p><b>HOW TO APPLY:</b>The NJ Judiciary requires all applicants to complete the application process fully and as instructed. All data received will be kept in strict confidence except to inform the individual of the findings and what action will be taken as a result of this information.</p><p><b>Residency Law</b>: In accordance with N.J.S.A. 52:14-7 (L. 2011, Chapter 70), the &quot;New Jersey First Act,&quot; all persons newly hired by the Judiciary within one year must establish, and then maintain, principal residence in the State of New Jersey.
