AIP is looking for a Detention Officer to work in Batavia, NY. The Detention Officer is responsible to ensure the safety and security of detainees in custody, acting in accordance with the highest ethical standards at all times, and ensuring a spirit of fairness and integrity in the on-going execution of their duties. Responsibilities:
<ul><li>Performs duties related to the detention, processing, safeguarding, security, and escort of detainees as required by the contract
</li><li>Supervise and control detainee behavior during the operation of the detention facility; or restrain by force if necessary, using handcuffs and other restraints</li><li>
Exercise appropriate judgment in handling of special needs situations or detainees</li><li>
Communicate effectively and coherently with other staff or detainee with approved facility communication devices including the telephone system, intercom system, and portable radios; demonstrate effective communicative skills with detainee, public and staff</li><li>
Perform searches of detainees, vehicles, mail items, objects capable of concealing contraband, buildings, indoor and outdoor areas which may involve feeling or detecting objects, walking, kneeling, bending or stooping for long periods of time</li><li>
Escort detainees (hostile, aggressive, passive, etc.) using handcuffs and other approved restraints in accordance to policy and procedure</li><li>
Maintain company equipment and uniforms in functional condition as prescribed for by company policy</li><li>
Transport detainees securely using ICE approved restraints and vehicles to off-site location</li><li>
Ensure that your communication radio is in good working order with a fully charged battery
</li><li>Inspect, maintain, and care for authorized post related equipment
</li><li>Attends to housing, feeding, and the physical well-being of detainees, on a variety of shifts 24 hours a day

Qualifications:

Job Summary</b></p><p>
The duty of a Corrections Officer focuses primarily on the custody and care of inmates and to maintain control of the Van Buren County Jail. The Corrections Officer will be required to maintain a secure and human living environment for the inmates in accordance with the policies and procedures of the Van Buren County Jail. Corrections officer will answer directly to a Corrections Sergeant, in the absence of the Corrections Sergeant and no other Corrections command, Corrections Officers will report to the Uniform Response Sergeant on duty.</p><p><b>
Principle Duties and Responsibilities</b></p><p>
The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.</p><ul><li>
Book, finger print and take the picture of prisoners. Prepare records of all prisoner' s personal property at the time of detention.</li><li>
Safeguard in mate's personal belongings and return to them upon release.</li><li>
Screen inmates for medical and psychological conditions and document and report all condition to a supervisor.</li><li>
Physically and verbally control disruptive inmates.</li><li>
Escort inmates out of the cells for recreation, medical visits, court appearances, attorney visits, transfers to other facilities, etc.</li><li>
Maintain head count including movements of inmates.</li><li>
Enforce inmate rules by making written reports and making violations known to supervisors.</li><li>
Investigate violations of inmate's rules and regulations. Interview witnesses, victims and others in order to prepare the required reports.</li><li>
Inspect cells and premises for security and sanitation.</li><li>
Distributes food trays, laundry, mail, commissary orders, and prescribed medication.</li><li>
Controls inmates by maintaining cell checks at a minimum of one per hour.</li><li>
Check inmate court paperwork and keep i nm ate files up to date.</li><li>
Makes sure all inmate appointments are placed on the appointment list.</li><li>
Taking bonds and being responsible for lawfully releasing inmates.</li><li>
Administers PBT to inmates to determine alcohol content.</li><li>
Practical knowledge of applicable Federal, State and local laws and informing supervisors when non-compliance is known</li><li>
Answer telephones and give allowable information to the public.</li><li>
Escort and retain custody of inmates removed for jail approved functions.</li><li>

Special Requirements -</b></p><p>
Physical ability by successfully completing the Michigan Sheriffs ' Coordinating and Training Council (MSCTC) Local Corrections Officer Physical Ability Test (LCOPAT).</p><p>
Good moral character as determined by a favorable comprehensive background investigation. The background investigation is understood to encompass all forms of pre-employment screening, including but not limited to: drug screen, physical, criminal background, driving record, sex offender registry, education, training and licensing verification, credit check, school and employment records, home environment, personal traits, integrity and professional and personal references. Consideration will be given to all criminal and civil law violations as indicating a lack of good character.</p><p>
Mental fitness as determined by an evaluation by a licensed health care professional which demonstrates that the candidate is. free from mental or emotional instabilities which may impair the performance of the essential job functions.</p><p>
Possession of a valid State of Michigan Operator's License and maintains eligibility to drive as per the County's driving policy and the Sheriff&rsquo;s Office policies and procedures.</p><p><b>
Pre-Employment Testing</b> - Successful applicants will be given a conditional offer of employment, however, prior to beginning their actual job duties. The applicant must pass the MSCTC pre-employment reading, writing, situational reasoning and physical agility tests.</p><p>

This is a highly responsible position in the Justice and Public Safety Cabinet. The employee is expected to perform all duties to the best of their ability, act in a responsible manner at all times, demonstrate leadership qualities, and treat all staff, youth, and persons with respect. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
<ul><li>Has functional supervision over and coordinates the work of employees or inmates for a specialized program or detail.
</li><li>Performs custodial security functions.
</li><li>Supervises and monitors activities of DJJ juveniles; assists juveniles in interpersonal skill development.
</li><li>Supervise Correctional Officers. Completes evaluations and approves time and attendance.
</li><li>Maintains shift logs on juvenile's activities and notifies supervisors of issues; completes incident reports as needed; assists juveniles in complaint procedures.
</li><li>Provides support services for routine maintenance, etc.; checks premises and ensures the safety of juveniles; attends staff meetings, case conferences and trainings.
</li><li>Assists in group counseling sessions and assignments.
</li><li>Transports juveniles to off campus outings, appointments, etc.
</li><li>Be able to exert physical effort in the proper restraint of residents based on behavior.
</li><li>May perform other physical efforts in assisting youth with recreational and work related projects.</li></ul>
Additional Information:
<ul><li>This position is deemed essential and has been designated for mandatory operations by the Appointing Authority; therefore, the incumbent is not eligible for Adverse Weather Leave.
</li><li>May be required to work overtime and any shift as needed and directed.
</li><li>Required to successfully complete the Department of Juvenile Justice Training Academy; which entails two weeks on the job training, four weeks (Monday &ndash; Friday) at the academy training location (Louisville, Kentucky). Overnight lodging and travel is required for the ACT and provided by the department.</li></ul>
This position has an approved Locality Premium of $5.228, based on the organizational structure and work county it is currently assigned to, in compliance with 101 KAR 2:034 Section 9(1).<br>

This job classification is approved for the following shift premiums, in compliance with 101 KAR 2:034 Section 9(2), which are applied to the base salary:
<ul><li>Shift Premium - $2.13 an hour between 3:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m.
</li><li>Shift Premium $1.13 an hour between 11:01 p.m. and 6:59 a.m.
</li><li>Weekend Premium - $2.13 per hour

</div></div><div><div>Minimum Requirements
</div><div><div><b>EDUCATION:</b> High school graduate.</div><br>
<br>
<div><b>EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, OR SKILLS:</b> Must have one year of experience in corrections, law enforcement, criminal justice, social work dealing with the rehabilitation of offenders, or in the supervision and care of young adults (ages 12-21) in a residential, correctional, group home, detention or day treatment program or any combination of the above.</div><br>

<div><b>Substitute EDUCATION for EXPERIENCE:</b> An Associate's degree from a college or university in corrections, criminal justice, law enforcement or a related field will substitute for six months of the required experience. A bachelor's degree from a college or university in corrections, criminal justice, law enforcement or a related major field will substitute for the year of required experience. For the Department of Juvenile Justice, successful completion of the Department of Juvenile Justice Training Academy or equivalent training program approved by the Commissioner of the Department of Juvenile Justice will substitute for one year of the required experience.</div><br>

<div><b>Substitute EXPERIENCE for EDUCATION:</b> NONE</div><br>

<div><b>SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (AGE, LICENSURE, REGULATION, ETC.):</b> Must be twenty-one years of age. Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license to qualify for employment in this job classification. For the Department of Juvenile Justice, must successfully complete the Department of Juvenile Justice Training Academy within six months of employment. Must maintain any required licensure(s), certification(s), or other credentials for the length of employment in this job classification. Employing agency is responsible for ensuring employee possesses and maintains required licensure(s), certification(s) or other credentials.

</div><div>Work environment is hazardous due to working in a state correctional facility with convicted felons or in a juvenile detention facility. May be exposed to hazards and dangers associated with operating a motor vehicle when providing transportation.

</div><div>This job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 6 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.
