POSITION DESCRIPTION: 
 
The Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights (CHIRLA) is seeking a Deputy Director of Communications to be responsible for managing and supporting the planning, coordination strategy, and execution of communications department strategic communications plan. The Deputy Director is a key member of the communications team and supports all aspects of content, outreach, and promotion via traditional and new media, in coordination with the Communications Director. This position will supervise and work directly with communications and program staff to create, promote and disseminate CHIRLA&rsquo;s key messages through earned media, publications, web platforms, videos, social media, events, and marketing campaigns. The Deputy Director will lead department activities and staff, in the absence or with instructions from the Director of Communications. The ideal candidate has a strong interest in CHIRLA&rsquo;s core principles; is skilled at working independently and as part of a team; and can demonstrate initiative, professionalism, and attention to detail. This position reports to the Director of Communications. 
 
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:<ul><li>
In collaboration with the Director of Communications, manage the designing and executing CHIRLA&rsquo;s strategic communications plan, setting measurable goals and objectives.</li><li>
Supervise and manage work expectations and deliverables by members of the communications team including the Communications Manager, Digital Content Manager, and Graphic Designer, Assist with supervision and management of work expectations, deliverables of the Social Media Coordinator and the Digital Media Content creator.</li><li>
Execute the implementation of projects, campaigns, and other effective communication strategies and report to the Communications Director on useful metrics.</li><li>
Develop guidance and support, including capacity-building opportunities for communications team members, as well as others in the organization who may need communications capacity building.</li><li>
Draft, edit, and manage distribution of press advisories, releases, and ensure posting on website.</li><li>
In coordination with the Social Media Coordinator, edit program material, including fact sheets, position papers, e-blasts, web content, marketing materials, video scripts, speeches, and board presentations.</li><li>
Review articles, posts, fact sheets, press releases and statements, e-newsletters, and other content needed on organizational activities, programs, and members.</li><li>
Oversee development and cohesive execution of digital content distribution systems that work well organization widely.</li><li>
Represent the communications department and team at meetings and gatherings and lead department activities as required.</li><li>
Develop and execute training opportunities for staff, community members and partner organizations to grow the team of organizations and movement spokespersons.</li><li>
Strengthen relationships with key members of the media.</li><li>
Participate in periodic debriefs and reporting with Communications Director and other team members around messaging, project updates, metrics, and progress to date</li><li>
Ensure weekly, monthly, and quarterly reports are submitted timely and include helpful and comprehensive details about program activities</li><li>
Conduct research and activities that assist the fundraising program for department sustainability</li><li>
Assist in the writing of grants and proposals as necessary for communications department sustainability</li><li>

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS: 
Required<ul><li>
Bachelor&rsquo;s degree in communications, journalism, or related field.</li><li>
At least five years&rsquo; relevant professional communications experience.</li><li>
At least three years&rsquo; supervisory experience.</li><li>
Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English and Spanish.</li><li>
Strong project management skills with the ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously with a high degree of accuracy and supervise the work of the team.</li><li>

Job Description 
The Director of Communications &amp; Engagement provides strategic leadership for the College of Science's communications, marketing, branding, and engagement efforts. As a member of the College's executive leadership team, this position serves as a trusted advisor to the Dean and senior leadership, developing and executing a comprehensive communications strategy that advances the College's mission, elevates its reputation, and supports its strategic priorities.
The Director oversees all aspects of internal and external communications, brand management, digital and print publications, media relations, academic events and conferences, and stakeholder engagement. This role ensures that the College presents a cohesive and compelling narrative to faculty, staff, students, donors, research partners, alumni, the broader scientific community, and the public.
In addition to leading a high-performing communications team, the Director partners closely with the Director of Departmental Operations to strengthen staff engagement, professional development, and organizational effectiveness while fostering a culture of innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
Key Responsibilities<ul><li>
Develop and implement a comprehensive communications and engagement strategy that advances the College's mission, strategic priorities, and long-term reputation.</li><li>
Serve as a strategic advisor to the Dean and executive leadership on executive messaging, crisis communications, reputation management, organizational change, and public engagement initiatives.</li><li>
Provide leadership and oversight for all communications and marketing functions, including branding, media relations, publications, digital communications, social media, and storytelling that elevates faculty, research, student, and alumni achievements.</li><li>
Establish and maintain a cohesive College brand and messaging framework across departments, centers, institutes, and key stakeholder audiences.</li><li>
Lead the planning and execution of signature events, academic conferences, and engagement initiatives that strengthen relationships with donors, alumni, students, faculty, and external partners.</li><li>
Foster a data-informed communications strategy by leveraging analytics, audience insights, engagement metrics, and emerging technologies, including AI-enabled tools, to improve effectiveness and operational efficiency.</li><li>
Lead, mentor, and develop the communications team while overseeing departmental priorities, resource allocation, budgets, and workflow to ensure high-quality execution and continuous improvement.</li><li>
Partner with University communications, the Provost's Office, Notre Dame Research, and other campus leaders to align College communications with broader institutional initiatives and represent the College on University committees.</li><li>
Collaborate with the Director of Departmental Operations to support staff engagement, professional development, performance management, and organizational effectiveness.</li><li>
Perform other duties and strategic initiatives as assigned by the Dean or their designee.</li></ul> 
Qualifications 
<ul><li>
Bachelor's degree in Communications, Marketing, Journalism, Public Relations, or a related field.</li><li>
Five or more years of progressively responsible communications, marketing, or public relations experience.</li><li>
Demonstrated experience developing strategic communications plans and advising senior leadership.</li><li>
Experience leading professional staff, managing complex projects, and overseeing budgets.</li><li>
Exceptional written, verbal, organizational, and relationship-building skills.</li></ul>
Preferred Qualifications<ul><li>
Master's degree in a related field.</li><li>
Three or more years of management experience.</li><li>
Experience in higher education, research, or another complex organization.</li><li>
Familiarity with project management platforms such as monday.com.</li><li>
Experience using communications analytics and emerging technologies to enhance engagement and operational effectiveness.</li></ul> 

Additional Information 
Salary: Up to $130,000, Commensurate with experience.

The Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) is seeking a dynamic, forward-thinking Director, Communications to lead our communications function into a modern, integrated, and high-impact strategic capability.
This is a pivotal moment for STS. As we elevate our brand, expand thought leadership, deepen member engagement, and modernize our channels, tools, and storytelling, this role will define how STS communicates, connects, and leads.
Job Summary
The Director serves as both strategic leader and hands-on writer and executor-equally adept at shaping vision and delivering high-impact content. This role requires exceptional strength in executive communications, thought leadership, media relations, and storytelling. The ideal candidate is an outstanding writer who can translate complex science and data into clear, compelling narratives that inform, inspire, and drive action.
This leader will advance STS priorities by strengthening visibility, amplifying member voices, elevating advocacy and public policy communications, and ensuring consistency, clarity, and measurable impact across all channels.
Working cross-functionally with Marketing, Digital, Publications, Research, the National Database, Member Engagement, and external partners, the Director will build and lead a cohesive, data-driven, multi-channel communications ecosystem. This includes-but is not limited to-podcasts, newsletters, email, web, press, social media, science news, advocacy content, and member storytelling. 
Experience and Skills:
Duties and Responsibilities<ul><li>
Executive Communications and Thought Leadership: Serves as senior communications strategist, advisor, and lead writer for STS Officers and senior leadership. Develop and deliver high-impact content across Presidential Updates (video, email, social), as well as interviews, articles, blogs, podcasts, and multimedia featuring governance leaders and scientific experts. Lead planning, strategy, integration, and execution of a communications editorial calendar. Partner closely with the VP, Marketing and Communications and STS Officers to develop messaging, talking points, scripts, presentations, and video content. Own the end-to-end development of a comprehensive thought leadership strategy, personally drafting Presidential communications, newsletters, scripts, blogs, podcasts, social media content that reflect a clear, authentic STS voice. Drive creation of marquee storytelling assets, including the annual highlights video and flagship podcast series (e.g. Best in Lung Cancer Science, Thinking Thoracic, Resilient Surgeon, Same Surgeon, Different Light), from concept through script and production direction.</li><li>
Proactive Communications Strategy: Develop and lead a forward-looking communications strategy and content calendar that brings the STS story to life. Modernize communications and storytelling by engaging members and volunteers and expanding their voices across STS channels. Identify innovative formats and channels to increase reach and engagement. Establish performance metrics and regularly evaluate and refresh all communications tools and platforms, recommending enhancements, optimization, or sunset decisions. Recommend platforms for monitoring and measurement</li></ul><ul><li>
Content Creation and Communications Execution: Lead and contribute to the creation of high-impact communications, including articles, newsletters, statements, talking points, FAQs, presentations, video and podcast scripts, emails, and social content. Oversee and support production of key member communications such as National Database News, The Hub, Early Career Newsletter, Advocacy Monthly, and International Connection. Partner with the Annals to communicate new science, research, and content to members.</li><li>
Narrative, Brand, and Messaging: Partner with VP on the STS Branding Initiative to elevate and modernize the organization's voice, messaging, visual brand identity, brand positioning, and brand architecture. Lead development and ongoing refinement of the STS narrative and message map. Ensure alignment and consistency across all communications, including new products, strategic initiatives, campaigns, and the Annual Meeting (talking points, press releases, scripts, and statements).</li><li>
Media Relations and Reputation Management: Lead STS media relations strategy, including development and distribution of press releases for STS and The Annals, proactive media outreach, and response to press inquiries. Oversee Annual Meeting media strategy, press briefings, and coverage. Monitor media landscape and deliver insights through media listening and reporting to strengthen STS reputation and visibility. Identify issues and media trends on the horizon.</li></ul>
Education and Experience<ul><li>
Bachelor's degree in communications, marketing, journalism, or related field required; Master's degree preferred.</li><li>
Minimum of ten years as a communications professional is required, preferably at an association, agency, or other not-for-profit organization with volunteer leadership. Health care experience preferred.</li><li>
Proven success developing and executing integrated, multi-faceted communication strategies.</li><li>
An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience is also considered.

Job Benefits:
The salary range for this exempt role is $153,000 - $195,000 annually. Actual compensation will be dependent on a candidate's relevant experience, skills, training, certifications/licenses and qualifications.
