The Director of Communications leads the strategy, systems, and congregational communication and the community at large. The Institute for Contemporary Art (ICA) at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) invites applications for the position of Director of Communications and Public Engagement

The ICA is a non-collecting institution that showcases a changing slate of exhibitions, performances, and programs. With a mission to listen, create, and make art public, the ICA is a place to explore new ideas, providing an open forum for dialogue and collaboration across the region and the world. Opened in 2018 in the LEED Gold-certified,Steven Holl-designed Markel Center, the ICA is a part of VCU&rsquo;s School of the Arts, linking the campus and the city of Richmond to an international network of contemporary artists and organizations, and encouraging working partnerships with VCU departments, faculty, students, and the broader community. ICA admission is free and open to all.

The ICA&rsquo;s artistic program includes exhibitions, film screenings, talks and discussions, outdoor activations, publications and performances and serves a broad public. In 2020, in partnership with VPM, the VPM+ICA Community Media Center was launched, which presents the annual Levels Up Academy podcasting forum, and the Resonate podcast festival. The Director of Communications and Public Engagement will design and execute an integrated strategic marketing and communications plan for the ICA with focus on the following priorities:

The Institute for Contemporary Art (ICA) at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) invites applications for the position of Director of Communications and Public Engagement

The ICA is a non-collecting institution that showcases a changing slate of exhibitions, performances, and programs. With a mission to listen, create, and make art public, the ICA is a place to explore new ideas, providing an open forum for dialogue and collaboration across the region and the world. Opened in 2018 in the LEED Gold-certified,Steven Holl-designed Markel Center, the ICA is a part of VCU&rsquo;s School of the Arts, linking the campus and the city of Richmond to an international network of contemporary artists and organizations, and encouraging working partnerships with VCU departments, faculty, students, and the broader community. ICA admission is free and open to all.

The ICA&rsquo;s artistic program includes exhibitions, film screenings, talks and discussions, outdoor activations, publications and performances and serves a broad public. In 2020, in partnership with VPM, the VPM+ICA Community Media Center was launched, which presents the annual Levels Up Academy podcasting forum, and the Resonate podcast festival. The Director of Communications and Public Engagement will design and execute an integrated strategic marketing and communications plan for the ICA with focus on the following priorities:

<li>Expanding awareness of the ICA&rsquo;s local, regional and international reputation

<li>Engage audiences and publics in ways that embody the ICA&rsquo;s mission to listen, create, and make art public

</ul>The Director of Communications and Public Engagement will work in close collaboration with other senior staff at the ICA, across VCU and with external consultants. They will lead and appropriately staff the communications team (Digital Strategist and Editor) in addition to project-specific graphic designers and part-time graduate student interns.

Reporting directly to the ICA&rsquo;s Executive Director, the Director of Communications and Public Engagement is a member of the ICA&rsquo;s managing staff. In addition, the Director of Communications and Public Engagement has a dotted supervisory line to the VCUarts Director of Communications and Marketing.

Position Responsibilities

<li>Develop strategies that showcase the institute&rsquo;s brand narrative.

<li>Devise, implement and maintain the overall marketing, communications and storytelling strategies of the ICA.
</li>
<li>Hone effective communication techniques for reaching and motivating the ICA&rsquo;s audiences to drive visitorship, program attendance, and giving

<li>Support the Digital Strategist in prioritizing innovative and effective digital engagement and storytelling content aligned with the mission and strategic goals of the ICA.
</li>
<li>Lead and coordinate the production process for various media and platforms, working with in-house and external freelance IT specialists, programmers, designers, and developers to execute projects.
</li>
<li>Establishing systems and procedures that map departmental priorities onto project-related tasks aligned with the ICA institutional priorities
</li>
<li>Work with department heads to develop content for the ICA&rsquo;s website and related digital products and initiativesEvaluate the effectiveness and efficiency of internal and external information; obtain feedback from the public and internal personnel through surveys, public opinion studies, and/or focus group meetings.

<li>Establish and maintain effective and cooperative working relationships with VCU and VCUarts communications teams, and other VCU faculty and staff, community leaders, donors, and representatives of communications media and governmental organizations.

</ul>Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications
<ul>
<li>Bachelor's degree plus three to five years of professional-level experience in marketing and communications, including experience of leading an agency or in-house creative team. Those who have a combination of professional training, experience, and education equivalent to a Bachelor's degree are invited to apply.</li>

Have demonstrated experience with various communications and content channels and platforms, successfully leading, developing, and implementing communications, marketing and digital strategy across organizations, ideally within the cultural sector

Position Summary</h3>

The Office of Research and Innovation (OR&amp;I) supports MSU&rsquo;s research enterprise by administering research funding, ensuring research integrity for both faculty and students, providing grant support services, fostering collaboration, licensing university inventions, and overseeing regulatory compliance.

OR&amp;I currently seeks a senior level Director of Communications to lead the strategic communications efforts for this major administrative unit (MAU). This individual will develop, coordinate, and execute communication plans, initiatives, and strategies to support the research enterprise and elevate the research reputation of the University. The Director also advises members of the Leadership team on communications, and develops key messages, speeches and other materials that align with broader goals and initiatives.

The Director will lead the communications unit, a cross-functional team of communication professionals supporting strategic communication, events, and other initiatives related to the Office of Research and Innovation and its reporting units. The position reports to the Chief of Staff in Research and Innovation and is a member of the leadership team.

This individual will represent and support the office by participating in strategic communication planning, aligning internal communication strategies to support goals and objectives of broad institutional initiatives, provide executive communication support, and represent the office in university-level meetings. Leadership, proactive decision-making, project management, and delegation are all skillsets that will be required for this position. The team this candidate will lead is trusted by all subunits of the office and across campus, brings added value to those they work with, and is focused on collaboration and proactive implementation to produce high-quality results for the units they serve.

Duties and Responsibilities
<ul><li>Provides strategy, guidance, and execution for executive level communications for the Vice President and other Research and Innovation leadership team members</li></ul>
<ul><li>Supports the Vice President and executive team with implementation of the unit and MSU strategic plans.</li></ul>
<ul><li>Works with unit leaders and their teams to identify and understand goals and establish priorities to deliver successful communication solutions. Such content may include required compliance or training initiatives, promotion of events or services, or other announcements important to conducting research.</li></ul>
<ul><li>Advances MSU&rsquo;s central communications initiatives; coordinates and collaborates with University Communications and other central units.</li></ul>
<ul><li>Develops, coordinates, and executes communications and marketing plans, initiatives, strategies, and activities to inform, educate, engage, and inspire action among MSU research faculty, staff, and students.</li></ul>

&middot; Works with University Communications to cultivate communication opportunities for executive leadership and subject matter experts related to unit and university initiatives. &middot; Collaborates with College communicators to curate research stories for amplification, and write research stories and announcements as needed for press releases, website content, etc.
<ul><li>Directs execution of multi-channel communication plans including vendor and freelancer relationships, production management for communications and technical functions and coordination of asset placement.</li></ul>
<ul><li>Oversees development and implementation of high-quality communication products including websites, annual reports, promotional emails, digital ads, social media content, podcasts, videos, and press releases, and various types of digital content for unit and university outlets (i.e., unit newsletters, MSUToday).</li></ul>
<ul><li>Facilitates events that serve the overall goals for the MAU that could include conferences, convenings, research lectures, or training workshops, assists in all promotional activities, and supervises the event planning staff.</li></ul>
<ul><li>Serves as a public information officer answering public requests and directing media inquiries to appropriate unit subject matter experts.</li></ul>
<ul><li>Oversees team operations and team member productivity, building a highly inclusive culture that ensures team members thrive and organizational outcomes are met.</li></ul>
<ul><li>Maintains awareness of university developments and standards, changes in dynamics, and other areas that that impact Research and Innovation and the units within it.</li></ul>

Strong writing skills are a must.

Overview
Reporting to the Interim Director of Public Affairs, the Assistant Director oversees a variety of projects for the Office of Public Affairs, including website content, video workflow, and the oversight of other multimedia content for internal and external audiences. This position oversees the planning and execution of video content and manages the video workflow, including lecture videos, profile videos, and animated graphics, working closely with the IT/AV department.
