Wake Forest University School of Medicine invites applications to fill an open rank, tenure track position with an individual conducting translational research focused on the prevention and treatment of infection, healing and repair of bone, joints, and soft tissue management. The candidate will collaborate closely with national leaders in orthopaedic research, with particular interest in orthopaedic trauma, periprosthetic infection, and regenerative medicine. The Atrium Health Musculoskeletal Institute has strong clinical programs in musculoskeletal care, including orthopaedic surgery, primary care sports medicine, physical therapy. Reporting to the Dean of the Medical College, Pakistan, <b>the Director, Centre for Regenerative Medicine and Stem Cell Research </b>is responsible for strengthening regenerative medicine and genomic research across AKU by training fundamental, translational and clinical researchers and leading translational research programmes.<br>
<br>
<b>The ideal candidate for the role:</b><br>
The<b> Director </b>will be an inspirational leader who can develop and implement a strategic vision for the Centre. They will promote a culture of learning, innovation, collaboration, teamwork, respect and ethical conduct of research. The Director will strengthen relationships with researchers and clinicians across AKU and build a network of local and global partners, inclusive of academia, government research facilities, and industry. The Director will be a leader in AKU&rsquo;s regions for policy development relative to regenerative and genomic medicine, ethics, commercialization opportunities, and community engagement.<br>
<br>
The ideal candidate will work in domains of regenerative and genomic medicine that align with regional priorities for South Asia and East Africa, including Mendelian and complex disorders. The high rates of consanguinity in Pakistan enables the discovery of novel pathogenic variants for Mendelian diseases. The Centre/AKU facilities enable the development of iPSC and animal models targeting patient-specific variants, precise gene editing, investigation of signaling pathways, and drug testing. Together, these activities provide functional validation of disease-causing variants and mechanisms and enable therapeutic development. Conditions with regional significance include blood disorders (sickle cell anaemia / thalassemia), neurodevelopmental disorders, metabolic disorders, cancers, and retinal disorders. The ideal candidate will have experience in bench-to-bedside translation of cell or gene therapies in these regionally relevant domains.<br>
<br>
This is a full-time position, with flexibility to consider a part-time arrangement for an exceptional candidate, in alignment with University policies.<br>
<br>
<b>Specific responsibilities will include to:</b><ul><li>
lead interdisciplinary regenerative medicine research and training within the Medical College, Pakistan and AKU while strengthening local through international networks with a full range of stakeholders;
</li><li>leverage AKU assets, such as biobanks and longitudinal health outcomes and phenotype data for translational regenerative medicine research programmes;</li><li>
lead the development of cell and animal models to support foundational through translational research;</li><li>
develop strategies to build capacity for the clinical delivery of regenerative medicines, including cell and gene therapies by engaging Aga Khan University Hospital and its Clinical Trials Unit;</li><li>
ensure adequate space, capital and human resources are available to meet the research and manufacturing needs for clinical translation;</li><li>
ensure compliance with requirements of all regulatory and accrediting bodies;</li><li>
participate on external scientific and professional committees to enhance AKU&rsquo;s reputation in regenerative medicine;</li><li>
represent AKU at international conferences, symposia and other professional convenings; apply for national and international grants to sustain and enhance the Centre&rsquo;s strategic goals and research programmes;</li><li>
represent the Centre to donors in collaboration with the University Advancement team to enhance the operating endowment and other activities/positions/infrastructure.</li></ul></div>

<div><b>The ideal candidate will have:
</b><ul><li>an MD, PhD, or an equivalent degree in a relevant discipline;</li><li>
a minimum of 10 years relevant work experience, 5 years or more at the rank of Associate Professor and be eligible for appointment at AKU for the rank of Associate Professor or Professor;</li><li>
a sustained and outstanding body of scholarship in translational regenerative medicine research, inclusive of cell or gene therapy development, as demonstrated through international peer-reviewed funding, publications, presentations, changes to practice or policy and/or other forms of dissemination that are recognized internationally;</li><li>
a demonstrated record in faculty and staff mentorship and training of graduate students and postdoctoral/clinical fellows;</li><li>
a demonstrated record of leadership of significant single or multi-site research programmes with high impact deliverables;</li><li>
experience in working with legislators, community leaders, industry representatives, and philanthropic partners;
</li><li>the ability to effectively represent the Centre in regional, national and international fora;</li><li>
demonstrated commitment to promoting diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging;

The <b>Associate Director of Operational Excellence (OpEx)</b> is primarily responsible for development and implementation of operational excellence systems and standards within the Devens Cell Therapy site. This leader will work across organizational boundaries to create and enable measured improvements in efficiency, cost of goods, error reduction and turnaround time. This role is responsible for driving a harmonized approach with and to the Cell Therapy Manufacturing network level by building relationships and by aligning the site to established network OpEx improvement framework.<br>

<b>Responsibilities:
</b><ul><li>Develop and deploy Operational Excellence tools, standards, and systems such as Kaizens, Value Stream Maps, Visual Management Systems, Lean Leadership and other key lean tools.</li><li>
Grow the Operations Excellence maturity level in the organization.</li><li>
Work with the Network CI team to develop and improve Operational Excellence standards and best practices.</li><li>
Provide coaching and mentorship to other members of the site management and OpEx teams.</li><li>
Analyze and identify process improvement opportunities and partner with key stakeholders to scope and ensure alignment with strategic priorities.</li><li>
Evaluate and establish processes and systems with the goal of improving product quality, throughput/capacity, reduce costs, and/or reduce lead-time and cycle times.</li><li>
Analyze work force utilization, facility layout, and operational data such as production costs, process flow, headcount and production schedules, to determine efficient utilization of worker and equipment.</li><li>
Design and facilitate kaizens/workshops to understand current processes, conduct root cause analysis investigation, design future state and develop change plans.</li><li>
Conduct Gemba style process documentation and diagnostic activities.</li><li>
Work across all levels, from business leaders to front-line staff, to identify business impacts and support the development of change plans.</li><li>
Direct multidisciplinary project teams to ensure delivery of the project on time, on budget and to pre-defined quality level. Prepare project schedules, coordinate the execution of technical projects and develop presentations to disseminate progress, risks and status to project stakeholders and senior management.</li><li>
Act as a strategic member of the site Operational Leadership Team, modeling desired OpEx mindsets and behaviors while challenging the team to improve ways of work.</li><li>
Drive changes across the organization.</li><li>
Drive a performance management culture by developing and deploying tools and techniques that mobilize and develop individuals at all levels, encouraging cross-team collaboration to achieve positive results for the organization</li><li>
Increase the effectiveness and efficiency of the organization's performance across all Site functions through fostering cross functional relationships, decreasing redundant work, and development of continuous improvement strategies</li><li>
Assist with development and implementation of operational excellence roadmaps to drive continuous improvement and value flow</li><li>
Champion the strategic direction and transformation of Continuous Improvement by simplifying, standardizing, and integrating improvement programs</li><li>
Lead and facilitates all aspects of change and continuous improvement initiatives, as well as, assists in the coordination of corporate strategic goals measurement and management (strategic scorecard development)</li></ul><b>
Knowledge, Skills &amp; Abilities:

Ability to work in a Manufacturing environment with well-rounded experience executing and leading projects on continuous improvement, Lean, Six Sigma, and operational excellence</li><li>

Understanding of Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) as related to Pharmaceutical and Biotech Manufacturing</li><li>
Clear demonstration of the ability to lead through influence, effectively drive performance, build alignment, inform, negotiate and collaborate with various stakeholders</li><li>
Demonstrated ability to always communicate positively and effectively in a variety of complex circumstances. Must have experience delivering complex messages to various internal and external stakeholders</li><li>
Demonstrated initiative, creativity, strategic capabilities, and ability to work effectively in complex, rapidly changing environments</li><li>
Ability to challenge the status quo to evolve business in more efficient and effective manner</li><li>
Deep experience in engaging and building relationships with internal and external stakeholders</li><li>
Ability to quickly assess a complex scenario and utilize common scenario planning tools and techniques to offer project teams and management viable alternatives</li><li>
Must possess strong verbal and communication skills, and a well-developed ability to constructively work across functional areas and levels to achieve results

Minimum Requirements:
</b><ul><li>Required Bachelor's Degree of Engineering or Science</li><li>
Required minimum 10 years of experience in biotech/pharmaceutical manufacturing</li><li>
Required minimum 8 years in Operational Excellence</li><li>
Master's degree and/or MBA - preferred</li><li>
LSSGB or LSSBB certification - preferred</li></ul><b>

Devens - MA - US: $179,250 - $217,206<br>
<br>
The starting compensation range(s) for this role are listed above for a full-time employee (FTE) basis. Additional incentive cash and stock opportunities (based on eligibility) may be available. The starting pay rate takes into account characteristics of the job, such as required skills, where the job is performed, the employee's work schedule, job-related knowledge, and experience. Final, individual compensation will be decided based on demonstrated experience.
