<p></p><p><b>Position Summary</b></p><p>
Under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse, the Electrocardiographic (ECG) Technician promotes safe patient outcomes for patients requiring remote telemetry monitoring. The ECG Technician observes, interprets, and documents the patient's ECG rhythm patterns and ST segment analysis as seen on the telemetry ECG monitors. This person ensures prompt discovery and reporting of changes in heart rhythm to appropriate staff members in accordance with established policies, protocols, and current standards.</p><p><b>
Duties &amp; Responsibilities</b></p><ul><li>
ECG Rhythm Interpretations:<ul><li>
Provides continuous ECG monitoring and interpretation for patients on telemetry</li><li>
Observes ECG rhythms on telemetry monitor</li><li>
Interprets ECG rhythm and documents interpretation</li><li>
Runs strip for each telemetry patient every four (4) hours</li><li>
Interprets strip, labels rhythm, and places strip in assigned location for review by patient&rsquo;s nurse and physician</li><li>
Notifies staff in a prompt and timely manner regarding changes in patient&rsquo;s heart rate, rhythm, oxygen saturation level or other pertinent patient information</li><li>
Provides documentation of change, placing rhythm strips in the medical record</li><li>
Provides trending information from monitors as requested</li></ul></li><li>
Equipment and Supply Maintenance:<ul><li>
Maintains equipment and supplies for telemetry system</li><li>
Monitors equipment daily and assures ordering of supplies on a daily/weekly basis</li><li>
Cleans lead wires and transmitters after each patient use and return them to storage. Note: Charge RN checks inventory of telemetry boxes at end of each shift and follows up discrepancies with nursing staff. Promptly notifies Biomedical engineering personnel of malfunction problems with equipment</li></ul></li><li>
Emergency Response:<ul><li>
Recognizes the need to escalate to rapid response team (RRT) or #1 Emergency Performs full disclosure of patients&rsquo; rhythms Notifies Risk Department when necessary Patient Care: Changes electrodes and batteries Complies with confidentiality and privacy requirements in the care of patients and their records</li><li>
Adheres to policies and procedures of hospital, unit, and infection control standard Maintains professional manner through interactions with patients&rsquo; families and peers Other Responsibilities: Assumes responsibility for personal growth, clinical competence and continuing education by attending educational activities, mandatory in-services as well as staff and departmental meetings</li><li>

Minimum Qualifications</b></p><div><b><br>
</b><ul><li>High school diploma or equivalent.</li></ul>

Verifies valid physician order or requisition for EKG study, verifies patient identifiers and inputs patient demographics into EKG machine;</li><li>
Monitors the recording procedures to discern artifact or abnormalities;</li><li>
Prepares EKG and other cardiac tracings for upload into EKG Data Storage System and assigns studies to be read by physicians;</li><li>
Prepares, sets up, and instructs patients for the 24 hour ambulatory Holter cardiac monitoring procedure;</li><li>
Prepares appropriate EKG charges for data entry by department billing personnel;</li><li>
Cleans and performs light maintenance on EKG equipment and notifies internal biomedical equipment repair staff or equipment vendors for more difficult repairs;</li><li>
During daily inpatient rounds, performs checks on unit EKG carts to verify accuracy of time, date and other settings;</li><li><div>
Performs pacemaker interrogation checks accurately and efficiently;</div></li><li><div>
Performs stress tests safely and accurately, including exercise treadmill, Lexiscan, Adenosine, Dobutamine stress ECHO, exercise stress ECHO and nuclear treadmill;</div></li><li><div>
Monitors and evaluates patient&rsquo;s responses to testing procedures such as symptoms, vital signs and arrhythmias;</div></li><li><div>
Administers the application of the Zio-patch on patients accurately and efficiently;</div></li><li><div>
Maintains records of daily EKG processes; edits and transcribes functions for lead EKG attachments, Holter reports and 30-day Event reports;</div></li><li><div>
Maintains files, prepares new file folders in accordance with established protocols and procedures, searches for and pulls files;</div></li><li><div>
Performs Quality Control by verifying all hard copy data has been transferred to EKG Data Storage System;</div></li><li><div>

The required knowledge and abilities are attained through possession of a Certificate of Achievement or Certificate of Completion from an accredited EKG Technician training program, Laboratory Assistant/EKG Technician program, or Phlebotomy Technician/EKG Technician program consisting of 144 quarter hours (or equivalent) of classroom training in EKG and an externship of at least 160 hours that included any of the following: Holter monitoring, event monitoring, stress testing, or treadmill training;<br>

Two (2) years of full-time patient care experience within the past four (4) years in an acute care hospital, one (1) year of which was performing EKG procedures.</div><div><b><br>
Special Requirements:</b></div><div><ul><li>
Possess and maintain a Certification in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), for the duration of employment in this classification;</li><li>
Ability to travel to alternate locations in the course of work. If driving, possession of a valid California driver&rsquo;s license prior to appointment and the ability to qualify for and maintain a County driver authorization;</li><ul><li>As a condition of employment, pursuant to California Government Code Sections 3100-3109 and Local Ordinance, all County of Santa Clara employees are designated Disaster Service Workers (DSWs), including extra help.
