The ED Technician functions as an integral part of a multidisciplinary team and must be able to prioritize and manage multiple responsibilities while demonstrating excellent communication skills. POSITION SUMMARY</p><p>
This position is responsible for patient care in the emergency department as assigned under the medical direction of the base hospital EMS Medical Director. This position assesses, plans, implements, evaluates and documents care of patients in accordance with organizational policies and in accordance with standards of professional paramedic practice. This position is accountable for the quality of patient services delivered by self or others who are under their direction. This position utilizes specialized knowledge, judgment, and skills necessary to assess data and plan, provide and evaluate care appropriate to the physical and developmental age of assigned patients.</p><p><br>
CORE FUNCTIONS<br>
1. Evaluates acuity level of patients and insures appropriate matching of patients care needs to unit and hospital resources. Demonstrates the ability to assess data reflective of the patient&rsquo;s status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient&rsquo;s requirements relative to their specific needs.<br>

2. Performs basic patient care appropriately within scope of training: positioning, transportation, phlebotomy, ECGs, maintenance of spinal precautions. Administers or monitors medications when indicated and as ordered by a physician. Such medications are limited to those approved for administration and/or monitoring by a paramedic in the State of practice. Assists patient in transfer using proper body mechanics and transfer techniques. Starts peripheral intravenous lines, including external jugular lines, initiates infusion, and maintains and adjusts fluid administration per physician order.<br>

3. Performs cardio-vascular monitoring and management within scope of training.<br>

4. Performs airway management within scope of training and within state guidelines to include oxygen administration, tracheal suctioning, assisting with ventilation, positioning, end-tidal CO2 and pulse-ox monitoring.<br>

5. Actively participates in the resuscitation of critical patients as assigned. Observes and monitors patients through the diagnostic phase of treatment.<br>

6. Performs other duties as assigned based on competency and training.<br>

7. Recognizes changes in patient status that requires notification of charge or primary nurse and physician. Keeps charge or primary nurse informed of patient status and current activities. Alerts responsible physician to changes in patient status.

8. Documents assessment and reassessments within unit guidelines on appropriate documentation forms. Documents the incorporation of assessment findings and appropriate standards statement to support desired Patient Outcomes. Documents patient progress toward outcomes and responses to interventions/therapeutic modalities example: Response to pain medication. Documents the discharge plan of care and services consulted during patient visit.<br>

9. Interacts with all levels of staff in a variety of departments, physicians, patients, families and external contacts, such as employees of other health care institutions, community providers and agencies, concerning the health care of the patient. Interacts with other health care providers in numerous settings in order to report and ask for or clarify information.<br>

Must possess a current and valid Paramedic certification or license within the state of practice and maintenance thereafter. Current BLS and ACLS certification is required. CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Hospital - Westover Hills (CSRH-WH) is a 150-bed hospital serving the fastest growing area of San Antonio. Specialized care includes orthopedic and surgical services, ICU, women&rsquo;s services, a newborn nursery, comprehensive cardiovascular care from diagnostics to open heart surgery, vascular lab, sleep center, emergency services, the CHRISTUS Weight Loss Institute, wound care, rehabilitation, and more. <p>Summary:</p>
<p>The Paramedic is a certified and/or licensed paramedic and is part of the hospital&rsquo;s Emergency Department patient care team. Reporting to the ED Nursing Director or Nursing Manager, the Paramedic collaboratively works in a complementary and assistive role with nursing. Under the direct clinical supervision of the licensed physician present in the same area or adjacent area, the paramedic provides assistance and performs procedures, and is authorized to provide advanced life support, administer medications and perform a patient evaluation of signs and symptoms based on their field skill sets. The Paramedic assists the nursing staff in providing patient care in accordance with training, competence and skill. He/she is knowledgeable of and follows all hospital policies and procedures. Consistently assists the patient care team with maintaining a clean, well-organized, adequately stocked and safe patient environment.</p>
<p>Responsibilities:</p>
<ul><li>Completely operates patient monitoring equipment, records, rhythm strips, runs 12 lead EKGs, biomarkers, and glucometer readings under the direction of the licensed physician.</li><li>
Performs phlebotomy, collects laboratory specimens as ordered and inserts saline lock, Foley catheter and nasal gastric tubes under the direction of the licensed physician.</li><li>

</b></div><div></div><div>This position provides assistance and/or performs basic specified treatments and procedures under the direct supervision of the charge nurse or designated RN. This position may also perform non-direct patient care activities as assigned, requested, or directed. Duties include: stocking of supplies, cleaning equipment, temperature checks, transporting patients as needed, collection of lab specimens. This position may transcribe and complete verbal orders for electrocardiograms and Holter Monitoring performed in the Emergency Department.<br>

</b></div><div></div><div>Performs and documents basic patient care related procedures under the direct supervision of an RN. Maintains competency of tasks in which the technician has been trained. Transcribes verbal order for EKG and successfully performs EKG, completes the order and submits tracing to Tracemaster and the EMR. Collects blood specimens within the parameters of documented competency. Transports patients via stretcher or wheelchair. Seeks clarification as needed to complete the assigned tasks.
</div><div>Maintains a safe environment. Reports real and potential safety hazards to the charge nurse and completes safety event report as necessary. Complies with Infection Control policies. Demonstrates knowledge of safety/emergency policies and procedures and appropriately corrects any identified hazards.
</div><div>Performs supply, equipment, and environmental-related activities as required. Recognizes and reports problems with supply/equipment availability in a timely manner. Performs and documents temperature checks and quality controls as directed. Stocks and maintains EKG cart and works with I.S. regarding any Tracemaster concerns. Maintains appropriate number of filled oxygen tanks. Prepares equipment and instruments for cleaning by central supply. Stocks supplies, to include nurse servers, cabinet drawers, and carts. Cleans unit equipment including stretchers.
</div><div>Demonstrates leadership ability through participation in the technician preceptor program and/or participation in a TriHealth or unit based committee. Has met all Unit and TriHealth requirements such as annual competencies. Has attended the required number of staff meetings.

Reports problems in completing assignment/tasks in a timely manner to the appropriate person. Documents observations and tasks performed.
