The City of Unalaska is accepting applications for the position of Firefighter in the Department of Fire and EMS. Located in the number one commercial fishing port in the United States, the International Port of Dutch Harbor, Unalaska, Alaska, is a coastal community in the Eastern Aleutian Islands with a multi-cultural population of approximately 4,250 full-time residents and seasonal influxes from multiple commercial fishery operations.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION: This position is an entry-level position under supervision from the Fire Captains. This position functions as a firefighter in response to fire incidences by protecting life and property, and as an EMT, in response to ambulance requests. Works under an assigned fire station Lieutenant to support both Fire Suppression and Emergency Medical Service (EMS) Operations to assess, and triage non-urgent, urgent and emergency request for medical care. Applies advanced knowledge and skills necessary to patient care and/or medical transportation. Facilitates access to a higher level of care when the needs of the patient exceed the capability level of the Advance Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT). Serves as a patient care team member in a hospital or health care setting when needed. May perform home visits to observe patient&rsquo;s care and report to a higher-level of authority. Educates the public on fire safety, prevention, and hazard mitigation. Promotes and supports public safety initiatives such as smoke detector programs prevention education in schools, and commercial pre-incident planning. Performs pharmacological interventions with basic and advanced equipment to mitigate specific life-threatening, medical, and psychological situations. Serves as an important critical link between the scene of an emergency and the health care system. Gathers medical information by questioning patient or other bystanders to collect medical information. Utilizes specialized equipment also known as the jaws-of-life to pry open vehicles, equipment, or structures. Administers medical treatment, checks pulse and respiration in response to patient's medical condition. Listens for alarm and details of radio message received from alarm office. Assists with loading and unloading patients into or from the ambulance. Explores the safest evacuation routes to carry and assist conscious, and unconscious victims. Develops and maintains current knowledge of well-established firefighting procedures. Determines whether to transport patient using ambulance or wing based on medical situation and according to orders and protocols. Drives emergency ambulance on an emergency call and transports patients to hospital or medical facility. Connects hoses and couplings to water sources, pumps, nozzles, etc., and advances charged hose lines to fight the fire. Identifies flammable or hazardous materials. Lifts and maneuvers hand-held and hand-raised ladders. Extinguishes fires in areas where there is no visibility and extreme heat. Opens holes in structures using axes, pike poles, or other equipment.  About The Department
 
 
 
 The Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department (FCFRD) received a Class 1 rating from the Insurance Services Office (ISO) in 2014 and was accredited through the Commission on Fire Accreditation International (CFAI) in 2018. FCFRD is a premier all-hazards fire and rescue department providing basic and advanced life support (BLS and ALS) emergency medical services (EMS), fire suppression, technical rescue, hazardous materials response, water rescue, life safety education, fire prevention, and arson investigation services. Approximately 2,000 uniformed, professional, and volunteer staff work across 39 strategically placed fire and rescue stations and administrative offices. FCFRD field personnel work one of three rotating 24-hour shifts. The FCFRD has 38 ALS engines, 13 ALS trucks/towers, five ALS rescue squads, four ALS chase vehicles, three tankers, a hazardous materials unit, and 43 emergency medical transport units. Several other types of apparatus, such as brush trucks, boats, and support vehicles supplement the department. FCFRD is also home to VATF-1/USA-1 , an internationally recognized urban search and rescue team that can deploy throughout the world to assist in times of crisis. The department has been accredited through the Commission on Fire Accreditation International (CFAI) since 2018.
