<br>Responds to emergencies and performs duties related to fire suppression, rescue, emergency care during ground and air ambulance transport; other tasks as appropriate and in accordance with level of training. Assist with departmental training; travel to North Slope villages as needed to provide support and training. This position is a regular member of the North Slope Borough Fire Department and is authorized to act under Alaska Statute 18.70.

The Medical Support Specialist (Plasma Center Nurse) works under the guidance of the Center Manager (or Assistant Manager as applicable) for operational guidance and under the management of the Center Physician for medical issues. The Medical Support Specialist will be familiar with regulations of the plasma collection industry or a manufacturing environment. The Medical Support Specialist follows guidance provided by BioLife Medical Affairs and provides center level support of environmental, health and safety (EHS).</p><p></p><p><b>
How you will contribute</b></p><ul><li>
You will determine donor eligibility; to include, proper management of informed consent, AIDS education and confidential self-exclusion, medical history interview and acceptance requirements, physical examination, blood testing, and reviewing Serological Protein Electrophoresis (SPE).</li><li>
You will evaluate donor reaction(s), which occurs at the facility as outlined in the SOPs. Follow applicable SOPs for medical emergencies including the development of Center Physician's standing orders and donor transport to emergency care facilities.</li><li>
You will refer to the Center Physician or Medical Affairs (as applicable) when in need of providing unacceptable findings to donors, or guidance concerning medical or technical issues, including donor safety and eligibility.</li><li>
You will support the Hepatitis B and Seasonal Flu vaccination programs for employees as applicable.</li><li>
You will manage employee incidents and determine whether further evaluation is required by occupational health/ER. Refer to EHS guidance regarding employee incidents.</li><li>

<b>TRAINING</b><b>:</b><br>
All successful applicants, upon employment, must attend a 9 month recruit school. Some of the many skills taught during this training program include driving and operation of a fire engine, search and rescue techniques, use of ladders, structural fire fighting, handling hazardous material incidents, and basic investigation of fire and arson. Each recruit must qualify as a state certified emergency medical technician. During the recruit school, instruction in emergency medical procedures is also provided.<br>

<b>THE</b><b> </b><b>WORK</b><b> </b><b>SCHEDULE</b><b>:</b><br>
Each firefighter works an average of ten, 24-hour shifts each month. The shift begins at 7 a.m. and ends at 7 a.m. the following day. During a typical 21-day work cycle, a firefighter will be on-duty for seven shifts and off-duty for fourteen with one, two, three or five days off between shifts.<br>
<br>
<b>A FIREFIGHTER&rsquo;S </b><b>DUTIES</b><b>:</b><br>
The firefighter reports for duty at the assigned station at 7 a.m. Each station is equipped with all the necessities of home as well as some of the luxuries of home.<br>
<br>
The day typically begins with an inspection of equipment and fire apparatus to ensure that all equipment is ready to perform its function or task.<br>
<br>
Remaining hours of the shift are devoted to a combination of tasks: training, inspections, public education, pre-fire planning, emergency response to fire, medical and emergencies as well as the routine chores associated with life at the fire station.<br>
<br>

Several levels of responsibility create the rank structure of the Chesapeake Fire Department. As training and required in-service time is acquired, the firefighter can advance by either of two paths:<br>
the Command Ranks (Firefighter, Lieutenant, Captain, Battalion Chief) or Career Path (Senior Firefighter or Master Firefighter).<br>

Firefighter/EMT Trainee

<div>Overview:

Executes crash, fire, and rescue responses, along with associated duties and training, as well as structural fire responses within a crew. Conducts hazardous materials responses and training at the Operational level. Executes Basic Life Support responses and duties at the EMT-B level. Assumes responsibility for the daily operational maintenance of equipment and the vehicle.</div>
